3. Coaching Log – Athlete Observation
Date 12/12/2014
Location I used video analysis of 4 games recorded since in 2014 and one game ‘in the
flesh’ at Water Hall.
Strengths I feel I completed this section appropriately as I watched well constructed
videos of Scott’s performances for his college football team, which identified
the highlights of his performance. My data is also very realistic as the videos
were recorded in the 2014 season meaning they are current. Also as I
watched 4 videos I was able to see what he was like in a various games to
identify what his strengths and weaknesses were.
Improvement
Areas
To improve my observation of Scott I could have watched more than one
game ‘in the flesh’ so I could see a more overall performance rather than
from a video recorder. It would've helped me look more precisely at his
positioning and any other movement off the ball.
Points for future
discussion
I would like to see Scott play in more games, perhaps at a higher level, for
example against the top team in their league and see if performance is still at
the same quality.

arising
If I was to attend the next game Scott plays I could then back up my initial
assessment with some more evidence.
4. Coaching Log – Athlete Profiling Meeting

Once the meeting started with Scott I began by giving a small explanation of
Performance Profiling and explained how it would benefit them as an athlete.
After he had a better understanding of Performance Profiling we commenced with
the scale system and what he would have to do to complete his part of the
assessment. I made sure I explained the scale system with detail and care as I
didn't’t want him to not understand the whole concept of the profiling.
Concerns My biggest concern about the interview was that Scott did not take his time in
deciding how important each trait for excellence was. I feel that it was slightly
rushed and if Scott was to look at again there may have been some differences in
his scores.

I would've like to spend more time discussing with the athlete in our one to one
meeting. I feel like he could have identified in more details which traits for
excellence were more important than others. (API)

Possibly let Scott use video analysis to watch his own performance and then score
himself on the API and ASA, as this might potentially produce more realistic
scorings.
5. Coaching Log – Coach Profile Meeting

During the meeting with Scott’s coach I explained firstly why the coaches input is
necessary within performance profiling and then went on to explaining the scale
and the importance of understanding the scale. I then gave him plenty of time to
think and score Scott out of 10 on all his traits for excellence.
Concerns My concerns with my coach meeting were quite different compared to my player
meeting. I was more concerned with the coach that they would forget the
meaning of the scale and in fact score Scott wrongly. Not that they did not
understand the scale, however just forgot of its importance. Because of this
concern I made sure that the coach completely understood why the scale is used
and it’s importance so no problems would have appeared.

Although I used the coaches scoring along with Scott’s and mine, I would have
liked to have sat and spoken to the coach again about whether he agreed with my
4 final strengths and my 4 final weaknesses I had decided. This would have
reassured me that my decisions were either correct, or that he thought I had
made a mistake.

can discuss the strengths and weaknesses decided for that feeling of reassurance
or advice.
