The Pearls and Perils of For-Profit Education (Deborah Riemer)ODLAA
Education is on a fast-paced trajectory towards change, but how do institutions do it amidst an environment steeped in tradition? For-profit institutions, in particular, are bearing the brunt of an establishment fearful of change. One of the outcries frequently heard is that for-profits sacrifice academic quality for enrollment numbers. Maintaining quality, while servicing a growing population of students, is not problematic if appropriate systems are put into place that are focused on student learning, steeped in best practices, and designed for scalability. The vision for this design is inclusive of the whole, integrating a systems approach to quality that is incorporated across all levels of the academic unit ˆ the student level, faculty level, and administrator level ˆ and incorporates learning outcomes assessment within a flexible model of program design.

Among these are information literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving. This webinar will explore how these essential habits might be embedded in the transition from secondary schools, vocational and technical schools, community colleges, colleges, and universities to the world of work.
We know about the 21st Century Skills our students will need to prepare for the
global marketplace. But do we know about the “soft skills” required to succeed in college? The
College Success Rubric outlines ten traits our higher education partners have identified as critical
for college persistence. The rubric can be used by educators, counselors, or employers to embed
skill building into lessons and projects. It can also be used for students to assess their own
college readiness and set goals to enhance their preparation.
With the increased emphasis on concepts, inquiry based learning, ATL skills, ToK in the curriculum and approaches to teaching, what could assessment as an educational tool within the IB DP look like.
This highly interactive workshop will focus on the collaboration between a community-based organization and higher education institutions. It will concentrate on how the College Success Foundation – D.C. is bridging the pipeline from their HERO (Higher Education Readiness Opportunity) program for young men into the Achievers Scholarship Program, and how it strategically builds relationships to strengthen programs and the success of underrepresented students in college. Workshop participants will learn best practices for fostering and sustaining effective collaborations to better support underrepresented minority and first generation students, and will walk away with tangible information to apply to their organizations. The workshop will also explore the importance of establishing relations with all involved. Participants will share valuable tips around goal setting, effective communication, and developing creative, non-traditional strategic efforts to reach first generation underrepresented students.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
