2. Research • As we have been researching into the different type of
Horror film that we have taken inspiration or chosen
conventions out of, I thought that it would also be
suitable to find out what the classification of our film (if
we were to make one) might be. I have done this by
researching the same films, however this time I will
look specifically at the age ratings and the typical
classifications they get.
3. Scream 4 (Scre4m, 2011)
ALL INFORMATION SOURCED FROM BBFCWEBSITE
All of the scream films so far have been feature films and have mostly been given the same warnings i.e.
Gore, StrongViolence and lauguage. So Scream 4 has been awarded a 15 classification, this is because they
could be upsetting for younger audiences from
‘Stabbings and slashings have bloody consequences, with injuries seen on faces, bodies, and on the walls
and floors of various domestic settings. However, the attacks have a frenzied nature and are rapidly-
paced with no undue dwelling on their gory results, nor any strong sense of sadism in the violence.” –
BBFC Scream 4 film description
It is possible that the scream director also wanted the films to be for a mid teen upwards audience due to all
of this upsetting content – this can be seen as they were not asked to make cuts.
It has also been noted that strong language is commonly used throughout the entirety of the film
4. The exorcist
(1973)
The exorcist got an 18 age classification in the UK.
The storyline begins as a girl gets possessed by a demon
and was upsetting to some of the viewers that initially
viewed it. It contains sex and nudity throughout the film
however not much is seen and there is no full-frontal
nudity, strong violence and gore throughout,Very strong
language is used commonly including 2 uses of the C word
and 95 uses of the word f**k (Found from IMDB).There is
also Drugs andAlcohol used in some scenes in the film
including scenes in which adults have a dinner party, the
mother is an alcoholic and a girl is drugged against her
will. There is also an intense use of frightening scenes.
5. The Blair
Witch
Project
(1999)
The BlairWitch project was passed at a 15 due to the
strong use of horror and strong language.
This film contains strong language like the frequent use of
F**k used in a frightening context (said when scared or
frightened or upset).
It has frequent Jump scares throughout the film and these
often lead to intense horror scenes like being chased by
the protagonist.
The use of the handheld camera also makes the scene far
more realistic and frightening
6. Conclusion
So to conclude I would put my film at a 15 as if
we were to continue with the filming to make
a whole film it would be very similar to the
Blair Witch Project with the use of the hand
held camera and the unknown protagonist
which is set in the woods.
I would also pick on the jump scares of the
frequent unsettling noises that we have added
and music that indicates that something is
going to happen as well as the loud noises of
the snow screen and sharp cuts indicating that
something has happened to the female victim
in the opening.
