Introduction Facts about India Four out of every five citizens live in villages. There are about 200 times as many villages as towns and cities.  Thus, it is important that the solution to the  local problems must be sought out locally.
Introduction Local Self-Government The rural local government in India seeks to look after the needs and welfare of village people. The local government directly falls under the control of State Governments.
Self Governing Bodies in Rural Areas Gram Panchayat Block Samiti or Panchayat Samiti Zila Parishad or Zila Panchayat
Functions Provision of clean drinking water. Sanitation and public health and animal husbandry. Plantation of trees. Construction and maintenance of village roads, street lights, public wells, tanks, water ways and other public places in the village.
Functions Supervision of work of government servants like policeman, workers of Primary Health Centre, teachers etc. Supply of quality seeds and fertilizers. Organization of fairs and festivals. Keeping records of birth and deaths. Provision of centre of adult literacy.
Sources of Income The village panchayat gets its income from taxes and grants/aids from the government. It also raises loans to complete it’s welfare and developmental projects.
