Human reproduction and reproductive health
Male reproductive system
Testis, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate gland and penis
are the parts of the male reproductive system.
Name of the
Organ

Location

Structure

Function

Testis

Outside the
abdominal cavity
in the scrotum

Oval shaped
occurring in
pairs

i. Production of sperms

Epididymis

On the side of
testis

Coiled tube

Development and
storage of immature
sperms

Vas deferens

From testis to
urethra

Tube-like

Passage of sperms to
urethra

Seminal vesicles

In the abdomen
near the urinary
bladder

Paired tubular Secretion of seminal
gland
fluid

Prostate gland

In the abdomen
Single
Secretion of prostatic
below the urinary globular gland fluid. Along with
seminal fluid it forms
bladder
ejaculatory fluid.
Transport and
nourishment of sperms

Penis

Outside the
abdomen

Cylindrical
muscular
organ

ii. Secretion of
testosterone

Deliver sperms to the
site of fertilization
Female reproductive system :
Ovaries, Oviducts (Fallopian tubules), uterus and vagina and the parts of the
female reproductive system.
Name of the
organ

Location

Ovaries

Towards the
Oval shaped,
upper side of the possess 2-4 million
uterus in the
eggs at the time of
birth. Of these only
abdomen
about 400 eggs are
ovulated.

Oviducts
Connecting with
(Fallopian tubues) the uterus
Uterus

Vagina

Structure

Function
i. Production of
eggs
ii. Secretion of
estrogen

Tubes carrying eggs Conduction of eggs
to the uterus

In the lower
abdomen in the
middle of the
body

Muscular, pear
shaped, has strong
muscles

i. Keeps the foetus
during pregnancy.

In the middle in
the lowermost
abdomen

Muscular tube
opening to the
outside on one side
and opening in
uterus on the upper
side.

i. Route for
menstrual flow

ii. Pushes the baby
out during labour.

ii. Pathway for
