4. Father of algebra
• Al-Khwarizmi
• Muhammad ibn Musa al-
Khwarizmi was a 9th-century
Muslim mathematician and
astronomer. He is known as
the “father of algebra”, a
word derived from the title
of his book, Kitab al-Jabr
6. Variable: A variable is a letter that represents a number.
Coefficient: A coefficient is a number or symbol that is multiplying a variable.
Constant: A constant is a quantity that does not change in value, i.e. a number by itself.
Term: A constant, a variable or a constant multiplied by a variable are all considered terms.
Algebraic Expression: This is an expression that contains one or more numbers,
one or more variables, and one or more arithmetic operations.
Polynomial: Polynomials have variables that have whole number powers.
Definitions
10. Algebraic expression
• An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that consists of
numbers, variables, and arithmetic operations. These expressions are
used to represent mathematical relationships and can be simplified or
evaluated by substituting specific values for the variables. Algebraic
expressions do not contain equality or inequality symbols
11. Like Unlike terms
• Like terms are terms that have
the same variable part or are
constants.
• The variable part of like terms
must be identical, including the
same variable(s) and the same
exponents on those variables.
• The coefficients (the numerical
part in front of the variable) can
be different, but the variables
must match exactly.
• Unlike terms are terms that
have different variable parts.
• Unlike terms cannot be
combined directly because
their variable components
are different
15. Algebraic sentence
• Algebraic sentences give the relation between two algebraic
expressions
• Following symbols are used in an algebraic sentence
• =
• <
• >
29. Algebraic equation
• Two algebraic expression form a algebraic equation when they are
related with each other by the symbol of equality (=)
30. Linear equation
• An equation in one variable where the exponent of the variable is 1, is
called a linear equation in one variable
31. Solution of linear equation
• The solution to a linear equation is the value or set of values for the
variable(s) that makes the equation true
32. Rules to solve an linear equation
• The same is added on both side
• The same is subtracted from both side
• The same is multiplied to both side
• The same is divided to both side
Main goal is to isolate the variable
34. Few word problems

36. • The perimeter of a rectangle is 26 cm, and its length is 9 cm. Find the
width of the rectangle.
• A garden is 4 times as long as it is wide. If the width is 5 meters, find
the area of the garden.
