resource management game: mine “gold”
and “elixir”, use gold and elixir to buy
improvements to your town so you can build
stronger armies, raid other players in order
to loot their gold and elixir, rinse and repeat.

Empires or pretty much any other real-time
strategy game,
products employ the monetization
mechanism called "Free to Play" which
means that anyone can pick up and play the
game for free initially, but then as you get
engaged they start to require some kind of
payment to perform optimally relative to
what's possible. Nearly all the top-grossing
games employ this technique these days,
Clash of Clans just does it better than
everyone else.
