An Overview of Cinematography with types of Shooting Methods and Type of shots
Shooting Method
The master scene -A master shot is a film recording of an entire dramatized scene, from start to finish , from an angle that keeps all the players in view.
Coverage - Coverage is done after the master scene. As per the master shot, closeup, mid shots are taken.
In-one -This just means the entire scene in one continuous shot.
Pov — A point of view shot is a short film scene that shows what a character (the subject) is looking at (represented through the camera). It is usually established by being positioned between a shot of a character looking at something, and a shot showing the character's reaction (see shot reverse shot).
Montage — the production of a rapid succession of images in a motion picture to illustrate an association of ideas
Overlapping - a scene where the actor is opening his house door, entering his home, walking to the TV, opening it and sits on his couch. You will shoot him opening the door and getting inside the house in one angle, then you want to shoot him walking to the TV in a different angle, so you tell the actor to stop, change the angle and now you will shoot him walking towards the TV, but the actor will to go a few steps backwards and start the shot from the part of stepping inside the house, so you will have that action in both angles.
The Shots
Wide Shot - In this a complete wide shot is taken for establishing the venue. The wide shot is any frame that encompasses the entire scene.
Establishing shot - The establishing shot is usually a wide shot. It is the opening shot of a scene that tells us where we are.
Cutaways - shots that are used to cut away from the main action in a scene to control pace and mood
Inserts- shots that focus on a particular part of a larger scene a watch, a clock, etc..
Connecting shots- Helps to connect two shots through wide shots and closeups
Pickups - Its a type of re-shoot or just a small part which is needed.
Transitional shots- Connecting two different shots and giving a smooth shift from one scene to another

2. CAMERAWORK
The way the camera is used is crucial in producing a music video.
It can have and create different effects by the different Angles, and Movements.
In general every music video uses a variety of camera Shots, Angles and
Movements to create different techniques and to make the video different and
unique in its own way.
All camera shots can show a different emotion.
3. CAMERA SHOTS
Music videos feature a number of shots for various reasons, to relate with the
audience by expressing thoughts and feelings, but also to show the viewer what is
happening.
Certain shots that you would normally find in a music video include;Very Wide
shot –This is were the artist is shown visible (barley) but the emphasis is still on
placing the artist in the location/setting.
Wide shot –This is were the artist is shown taking up most of the shot but the
location/setting is still focused on.
Mid shot – this shows the artist from his/her waist to head, and focuses mainly on
the subject but still giving an impression of the location/setting.
4. CAMERA MOVEMENT
The camera moves to follow the artist or to show the performance of the artist.
These movements include panning and tracking.
Pans –This is were the camera scans a scene horizontally. The camera is placed on
a tripod, which operates as a stationary axis point as the camera is turned, often
to follow a moving object which is kept in the middle of the frame.
Tracking-This is were the camera is mounted on a cart which travels along tracks
for a very smooth movement. Also known as tracking.
5. CAMERA ANGLES
The way the camera is positioned determines the angle of the shot.
There are many different camera angles used in the production of music videos to
convey different images. Examples of camera angles are….
Eye-Level – this is a very common view being the real world angle that we are all
use to seeing, it shows subjects as we would expect to see them in real life.
High Angle –This is were the camera shows the subject from above, and the
camera is angled down towards the subject, which has the effect of making them
appear less powerful, less significant and or even submissive.
Low Angle –This is were the subject is shown from below, giving the impression of
being more powerful o r dominant.
