Objective
As a result of this practice you will be able to work in the
identification of a business opportunity & to defend it through a
presentation.
Finding the problem or identifying a particular need in a niche is the
first step to create, design and develop a particular solution to that
problem or need. The new solution will propose to use a new
technology, a new approach or whatever, that may be seen by the
market as something interesting that deserves an “opportunity”.
So, at the beginning of a course on Software Engineering, based in
the realization of practices of innovation software, it is required to
identify what will be called a business opportunity, that will be used
as a case for the practices.

What’s a business opportunity?
A business opportunity, or a window of opportunity, is based on:
•The identification of a need,
•the means and method to fulfil the need and
•a strategy to obtain benefit from the solution offered to the
market.
To take advantage of a business opportunity or a market
opportunity, for a product or for a service, implies that we are able
to identify and attend a new need of a particular customer, or solve
a specific problem in a better way than any other within the given
market or the society.

What’s a business opportunity?
The new solution or the new way to solve the identified problem
may be based on either one or several technologies, a method of
work, or any combination of them.
Michael Porter proposed a useful framework for assessing the
attractiveness of a market that identifies five factors that influence a
market potential:
•Buyer power
•Supplier power
•Barriers to entry
•Threat of substitute products
•Rivalry among firms in the industry
