Churchill became Prime Minister in 1941 at the start of the Battle of France. In his first speech to Parliament, he vowed to fight on against Germany and offered "blood, sweat, tears, and sweat." He took direct control of the war effort by creating the new position of Minister of Defence. Though France fell quickly, over 338,000 British and allied soldiers were evacuated from Dunkirk in a miraculous nine-day operation Churchill called the "miracle of deliverance," however tens of thousands of soldiers and much military equipment had to be left behind.
