Letter from Pope St. Gregory
Journey from 1000 – 1500 (High and Late Middle Ages) During this period, there were rapid changes in society. Towns and cities grew steadily. To meet the educational needs of townspeople, cathedral schools were established in the eleventh century. A great interest in learning led to the founding of the first universities as those in Bologna, Paris, Oxford
Journey from 1000 – 1500 (High and Late Middle Ages) Technical advances in architecture and engineering made possible the construction of the great GOTHIC cathedrals which still stand today.
Journey from 1000 – 1500 (High and Late Middle Ages) Many holy men and women responded to these changes in society. Two new religious orders, the DOMINICANS and FRANCISCANS were founded in the early 13 th century to spread the gospel in the growing cities.
Journey from 1000 – 1500 (High and Late Middle Ages) The Black Death struck in Europe three times during the 14 th century. Along with many of the laity, many of the clergy – as much as 1/3 in some place – died as a result of ministering to the sick

Italian Study Abroad                                                                                                                                  Students are encouraged to participate in the Junior Year Abroad Program at the University of Bologna , the oldest university in Europe. Cosponsored by UW-Madison and Indiana University , the program is not limited to Italian majors. Students interested in language, literature, art, history, music, international relations and political science will benefit from the experience of studying and living in one of the major cultural centers of Europe. A unique feature of this study abroad program is that, following an orientation period focusing on Italian language skills, culture, and history, participants attend courses at the University of Bologna with Italian students. They thus have ample opportunity to speak Italian and to gain first-hand knowledge about Italian life and culture.                                                                                                                                    Students may earn 30 or more credits on this 9-month program. Struggles and Upheavals Schism of 1054, the Eastern Schism occurred because of cultural, political, and theological differences between Christians of the East and those of the West. Starting in 1095, Christians embarked on several military campaigns to re-conquer the Holy Land from the Muslims. Called the Crusades, they caused much bloodshed and were unsuccessful. Lack of education and ignorance led to corruption and superstition. The Church formed a court called the Inquisition in attempts to reform heretical ideas and unjust practices which led to severe and unjust sentences.
