Chronic gingivitis is a reversible oral disease referring to inflammation of the gums induced by bacterial biofilms that accumulate as plaque on tooth surfaces and in calculus (tartar) forming on teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress through stages and eventually become the more serious periodontitis which can lead to tooth loss over time. Gingivitis has five stages from mild to severe inflammation.

Gingivitis is a reversible oral disease that refers to gingival inflammation induced by bacterial biofilms, also
called plaque, adherent to tooth surfaces. Bacterial plaque accumulates in the spaces between the gums
and teeth and in calculus (tartar) that forms on the teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to
periodontitis, which is more serious and can eventually lead to loss of teeth.
