Chronic Bronchitis

- 2. Is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes. Less air is able to flow to and from the lungs. In chronic bronchitis, more mucus than normal is constantly produced. Build-up of excess mucus that the cilia are unable to clear. You cough up heavy mucus or phlegm. After a long period of irritation the airways make an ideal breeding place for infections. Chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition that keeps coming back or never goes away completely. There is much that can be done to treat and help manage the disease.
- 3. Repeatedly breathing in fumes that irritate and damage lung and airway tissues causes chronic bronchitis. Smoking is the major cause. There is no cure. Over 90 percent of patients with chronic bronchitis have a smoking history. People slowly die from lack of air. Smoking leads to a buildup of mucus, as the body is trying to protect itself. Pneumonia and respiratory problems are far more common in smokers. If you quit smoking, you will breathe better.
- 4. You may need medicines to open your airways and help clear away mucus. Oxygen therapy helps you breath easier and it provides your body with needed oxygen. Remove the source of irritation. Quit smoking. To prevent the disease, avoid smoking and lung irritants.
