This is a famous proverb from Indonesia
Which in programming language you can translate it into something like this :D
So ... In order to love me, let me start by introducing myself
My Name is Anna
I’m a mother of two wonderful daughters (12 years old and 6 years old) and definitely also a wife – yes I do have husband :D
I’m a scrum master in an insurance company – 2 years as SM - 15 years working there
And I Love sport
Last but not least,
I also have a blog where I share my piece of mind about my journey in Agile
You are welcome to visit the blog.
Just write down the address and visit it later.
Now that you all know me
I hope you all love me :D
But that won’t be fair if you all know me but I know nothing about most of you, right?
So It’s time for me to know you too
Now...
Who knows this picture?
The ones who knows most probably have the same age or older than me :D
If you don’t…maybe you know this picture
In order to get to know you, I want to ask some questions:
Who are starting with transformation?
Who has new SM in the organization?
What are the challenge
What have you done?
Great!!
Now somehow we know each other :D
Let’s catch up even more during the coffee break
Let’s get started
Can anyone tell me the different between a house and a home?
Home is:
Place where you’re welcome
Place to grow
Okay to make mistake
Place where you feel comfort, accepted, protected
While house is more to the building
Why do you need a home in the context of Agile transformation?
For me, the first reason is
We Grow too fast
Let me give you the analogy
These roses are beautiful but if it grow too fast and nobody is taking care of it, it wont look so nice anymore
I want to share my experience in the organization I work for.
- We were starting our Agile journey in about 2 years back
- We start small (intentionally), but all of a sudden we realize that we grow too fast
From only few scrum teams to more than 12 scrum teams all together
Someone need to take care of that
2nd is :
We were Not Ready
Our team are not ready
We have no experienced SM – with the fact that we have 12 scrum teams
We have no PO – and yes ... 12 scrum teams .. No PO
Our Dev Team are not ready and not all have the mindset
Our users are not used to scrum or agile
The 3rd one was:
Insercurity
As I said earlier, we don’t have experienced PO and SM, so we kind of groom our BA and PM to become PO and SM
Also there are some business users also that we groom to become PO
Then the insecurity happen
PO that comes from BA felt insecure with their current role
Have to take decisions
Have to deal with managements
Etc
SM that comes from PM felt insecure
Must let go the command and control
Being a servant while being a leader
The fact is: Act as a facilitator mentor and coach is not the same as a PM
Realizing those issues we know that we need to grow gradually
And where you can grow in the right sequence?
At home right
We need a home To grow
With the right environment, all SM and PO can grow accordingly
But while growing and learning, also with the insecurity still haunting... You know what happen?
People fail…
In learning, we will do experiment,
Experiment leads to innovation
Experiment not always work, we will face failure
But a failure that are happen in the right place and treated correctly will lead to Success
so we need to make sure that
It’s Okay to Fail
By failing you learn
Environment need to accept failure
Now you know why you need a home, you might ask how to build a home?
I’m not an expert or anything, but I just want to share what we did back in the office to make sure everyone have a home
There are some SMs from my office here,
I hope they also realize that what we did was actually creating a home :D
1st:
We are making a Community Of Practice
Anyone know what’s a COP?
Place to share
Open for all SM and PO
Share their success
Share their pain points
Give suggestion
In my experience, people not trained to share
Our COP was almost “Dead”
People not coming, no engagement
People think that it was a waste of time, etc
So we come up with another initiative to make the COP better
And get more engagement from the member and the team
Rejuvenate Scrum Practices
Gamification
Make Scrum Team learn by “playing”
Give them direction on what to do each month
These are some of the pictures of the RSP
Yes we also give trophy and all.
I won’t share about the RSP here because
Gonna be too long
What we do back home probably will not suit your environment
But , If you want to know about this more detail, we can have a chat after
And you see that lady over there...her name is Ritu. She’s the one who came up with RSP basic idea
You can also ask her.
I’m sure she will explain better than me
Another way to build a home is by
creating TRUST relationship
Planting in their mind that Failure is a delayed improvement
As long as you realize that you are failed but you use that to improve yourself
Me and my team also make sure that we are
Watch each other back
By the time I created this presentation, we have no agile coach, so we
Play coach
Ready to help
Reachable
Open for discussion
Listen to difficulties coming from team
Try to show up in their sprint events if they want us to – as an observer only
Do we face any challenges?
YESSS… a lot!
One of the challenge was: CYNICAL
Next is that some people thinks that they are already in a good condition
They refuse to learn more
Next is that some people choose to stand outside
Not part of any agile related projects
Of course there will also be challenges coming from the top management
Like they’re not buy in to whatever that we’re doing
But this is not my focus today
I will be more focusing on how we create a safe environment for the team
But you know what
CHALLENGE is only a CHANGE
with LLE as the additional
I embrace challenge as a path for the change
Change for a better future
The agile transformation future
As a closure, I want to show you this video
This is the video of my children learning how to ride bicycle
To reach this point, me and my husband put lots of effort
Build secure feeling
Okay to fail
Practice makes perfect
Coaching is important
Coaching takes effort
Encourage
Release gradually once and a while
Understand that the result for each people are different
Appreciate when they succeed
And this is somehow something that you need to do with your teams
You must realize that each team are different and to help them you need to coach each of them differently
Make them feel at home
Make them feel secure and ready to grow
Provide them A PLACE CALLED HOME
