10 years ago I presented for the first time at Visug on the topic of Visual Studio Team System, the first iteration of a product family that allowed us to automate the long road from requirement to software in production, and everything in between. At the time software development was mainly a manual process. The software itself was either monolithic or composed of large 'SOA Services' and it was a real challenge to get them into production every few months in a so called 'big bang’ deployment. Since then our profession has gone through some major changes, software development looks a lot different now. Today, many applications consist of small parts called 'microservices'. These microservices make their way into the cloud or datacenter automatically, through API driven Continuous Deployment systems, every time anyone on the team commits a small change. While deployments are now happening continuously, they do have an impact on the system: taking down part of it for maintenance all the time. But at the same time, our customers expect the overall system to stay up 24/7. In this talk I will introduce you to an upcoming technology, called Service Fabric, that can help you maintain your development agility in this new world, but still live up to your customer’s expectations.

Building Reactive Applications With Node.Js And Red Hat JBoss Data Grid (Gald...Red Hat Developers
Node.js is a very popular framework for developing asynchronous, event-driven, reactive applications. Red Hat JBoss Data Grid, an in-memory distributed database designed for fast access to large volumes of data and scalability, has recently gained compatibility with Node.js letting reactive applications use it as a persistence layer. Thanks to near caching, JBoss Data Grid offers excellent response times for data queried regularly, and its continuous remote event support means data can get pushed from the data grid to the Node.js application instead of having to wait for the data grid to serve it. In this session, we'll show how to build Node.js applications that use JBoss Data Grid as a persistence layer.

Tokyo Azure Meetup #7 - Introduction to Serverless Architectures with Azure F...Tokyo Azure Meetup
Serverless architecture is the next big shift in computing - completely abstracting the underlying infrastructure and focusing 100% on the business logic.
Today we can create applications directly in our browser and leave the decision how they are hosted and scaled to the cloud provider. Moreover, this approach give us incredible control over the granularity of our applications since most of the time we are dealing with single function at a time.
In this presentation we will cover:
• Introduce Serverless Architectures
• Talk about the advantages of Serverless Architectures
• Discuss in details in event-driven computing
• Cover common Serverless approaches
• See practical applications with Azure Functions
• Compare AWS Lambda and Azure Functions
• Talk about open source alternatives
• Explore the relation between Microservices and Serverless Architectures
Write retrogames in the web and add something more with AzureMarco Parenzan
AWS re:Invent 2016: Content and Data Platforms at Vevo: Rebuilding and Scalin...AwsReinventSlides
Vevo has undergone a complete strategic and technical reboot, driven not only by product, but also by engineering. Since November 2015, Vevo has been replacing monolithic, legacy content services with a modern, modular, microservices architecture, all while developing new features and functionality. In parallel, Vevo has built its data platform from scratch to power internal analytics as well as a unique music video consumption experience through a new personalized feed of recommendations — all in less than one year.
This has been a monumental effort that was made possible in this short time span largely because of AWS technologies. The content team has been heavily using serverless architectures and AWS Lambda in the form of microservices, taking a similar approach to functional programming, which has helped us speed up the development process and time to market. The data team has been building the data platform by heavily leveraging Amazon Kinesis for data exchange across services, Amazon Aurora for consumer-facing services, Apache Spark on Amazon EMR for ETL + Machine Learning, as well as Amazon Redshift as the core analytics data store.
In this session, Miguel and Alan walk you through Vevo's journey, describing best practices and learnings that the Vevo team has picked up along the way.
Amazon Lumberyard is a free, cross-platform, 3D game engine for you to create the highest-quality games, connect your games to the vast compute and storage of the AWS Cloud, and engage fans on Twitch. Amazon GameLift, a managed service for deploying, operating, and scaling session-based multiplayer games, reduces the time required to build a multiplayer backend from thousands of hours to just minutes. Available for developers using Amazon Lumberyard, Amazon GameLift is built on AWS’s highly available cloud infrastructure and allows you to quickly scale high-performance game servers up and down to meet player demand – without any additional engineering effort or upfront costs.
Maximizing Audience Engagement in Media Delivery (MED303) | AWS re:Invent 2013Amazon Web Services
Providing a great media consumption experience to customers is crucial to maximizing audience engagement. To do that, it is important that you make content available for consumption anytime, anywhere, on any device, with a personalized and interactive experience. This session explores the power of big data log analytics (real-time and batched), using technologies like Spark, Shark, Kafka, Amazon Elastic MapReduce, Amazon Redshift and other AWS services. Such analytics are useful for content personalization, recommendations, personalized dynamic ad-insertions, interactivity, and streaming quality.
This session also includes a discussion from Netflix, which explores personalized content search and discovery with the power of metadata.
I presented this at a user group in Sweden, as a compilation discussion of practical customer experiences with WIndows Azure. The slides led the discussion. Enjoy.

Real-Time Dynamic Data Export Using the Kafka Ecosystemconfluent
(Preston Thompson, Braze) Kafka Summit SF 2018
If you collect billions of data points every day and create billions more sending and tracking messages, then you know you need to get your infrastructure right. Our clients use Braze to engage their users over their lifecycle via push notifications, emails, in-app messages and more. Using our Currents product, clients can enable multiple configurable integrations to export this event data in real time to a variety of third-party systems, allowing them to tightly integrate with the rest of their operations and understand the impacts of their engagement strategy.
We use Kafka and the Kafka ecosystem to power this high volume real-time export. As you’d expect in a big data environment, we take data collected from a variety of sources—our SDKs, email partner APIs, our own systems—and produce it to Kafka, with topics for each type of event (about 30 types). Kafka Streams filters and transforms this data according to the configurations set by our clients. Clients can choose which types of events should be sent to which third-party systems. Kafka Connect helps to export the data to third-party systems in real time using custom developed connectors. We run a connector instance for each integration for each customer that consumes from the integration-specific topic. On top of it all, we built a service to manage the pipeline. The service provides configurations to the Streams application and also creates topics for new integrations and uses the Connect REST API to create and manage connectors.
In this talk, I will discuss:
-How we started our journey in designing this large-scale streaming architecture
-Why streaming technologies were necessary to solve our technology and business issues
-The lessons we learned along the way that can help you with your Kafka-based architecture
AWS re:Invent 2016 was AWS’ largest event yet with over 32,000 attendees, 400 breakout sessions, and two keynotes of new product announcements. In this talk, we’ll explore the core themes of AWS re:Invent 2016 such as serverless and artificial intelligence. We will also drill down into several of the services and features unveiled including AWS Batch, AWS Shield, Aurora for Postgres, X-Ray, Polly, Lex, Rekognition, AWS Step Functions. Light appetizers and refreshments will be provided.

Reactive Development: Commands, Actors and Events. Oh My!!David Hoerster
Distributed applications are becoming more popular with the increasing popularity of microservices (however you want to define that term). But the principles of distributed application development are key if you want to build a system that is resilient, responsive, elastic and maintainable. In this workshop, we’ll review the principles of CQRS and the Reactive Manifesto, and how they complement each other. We’ll build an application that can handle a large stream of data, and allow users to still have a responsive experience while interacting with real-time and near-real-time data.
We’ll look at Akka.NET as the workhorse inside your services, and how the principles of CQRS can help with your service-to-service communications.
We’ll also look at how Event Sourcing can aid in managing your domain state, and how an event stream can be used to project data for your system for a number of different uses. We’ll build our own simple event store, but also look at commercially available stores, too.
This session will focus on using Akka.NET along with a few other tools and technologies, such as EventStore and MongoDB. The concepts learned in this session will be applicable to a number of different tools, technologies and languages.
This presentation was done to a group of university undergraduates, giving them an introduction into Azure cloud platform and Serverless in Azure. Introducing the Azure serverless offerings with light details about Azure Logic Apps, Azure Event Grids and Diving into details about Azure Functions.
