instructor asks a question that they want the choir to answer and no one answers it shows that no one

It was January 7th, 2017, the weather alert had been right, there was a pretty darn big snowstorm
outside, but inside, of the Boston Latin School auditorium, the 10th Annual MMEA Eastern Senior
District Festival were filled with excited spirits that were much bigger. There was a smattering of
students from each school in the Eastern District, and many BLS students were part of them. A
feeling of awe and admiration floated through me as I saw them enter the stage. In 4 years, I would
be just like them, I hoped.
There were 4 fantastic music ensembles that would perform: Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band,
and Chorus. Each group had a particular conductor, but all performed with much skill, gusto, and
professionalism.
The first to perform was the Concert Band, conducted by Dr. Emily Threinen (Director of Bands at
the Univeristy of Minnesota School of Music), with pieces such "Nitro" by Frank Ticheli and
"Sheltering Sky" by John Mackey. The ensemble's prominent performance, however, was in its last

The following show was the Senior Jazz Band, with only 20 students, conducted by Dr. Andrew
Goodrich (Director of various Jazz Bands, writer of reviews and articles realted to Jazz education,

Music Plays A Influence On My Life
Music plays a tremendous role in my life and always has. From the age of five, my parents
introduced to me to one particular type of music, which was gospel and it has been a part of who I
am ever since. I can remember waking up early on Sunday morning hearing gospel music from artist
such as Kim Burrell, Shirley Caesar, and Mary Mary. I began learning these particular gospel songs
and then I gained the courage to sing these songs in church. At that moment, I knew singing was a
passion of mine and music became food to my soul. I would have to say the moment in my life
where I strongly became influenced by music was as a child between the ages of five and twelve.
Then when I entered middle school, I joined the school band. I played two instruments, the
trombone and trumpet. Although I truly enjoyed playing those two instruments, I've always dreamed
of playing the piano or violin but I never gained the opportunity to receive lessons. During the
seventh grade, I joined the Needwood Middle School Choir. We sung gospel music and Christmas
music during the holiday season. With gaining so much musical experience during my time in
Middle School, my church appointed me to Youth Choir Director for Salem St. John Baptist Church.
Overall, I prefer Gospel music for so many different reasons. One of the reasons I prefer to listen to

I Attended The University Of Indianapolis Chamber...
I attended the University of Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble
concert on Thursday, October 8. The concert was located at the Ruth Lily Performance Hall in the
Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. The venue was calming and comfortable. It is a very nice set up,
but not extremely fancy. People arrived in anything ranging from suits and dresses to jeans and t–
shirts. The environment was welcoming and approachable for all the guests. I was able to see almost
all of the parts of the stage and all the members of each group. Noise levels throughout the concert
were very low. The only thing that would've have been nice is if they could have dimmed the
audience lights to create a better mood. The lights in the auditorium just seemed to be very bright at
times. During the Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble all the performers were
wearing all black. I imagine they did this for style and consistency. By wearing all the same color, it
helps them look professional and more uniform at the same time so people can pay attention to the
music and not the musicians choice of attire. Some women had slight sparkles or accents to their
attire and some men you could see the white of their suits but everything else was black which
created an element of class and elegance.
In the Chamber Orchestra the musicians were very dramatic in movement, especially the two

The Knowledge of reading music, and playing an instrument has proven to be beneficial to the
learning curb in students including those of little to no background in a literary education to students
in college. However, there are schools in America where music isn't offered. Having a music
program could create improved grades, memory, concentration, and quicken the learning process of
literacy, but it is believed that music isn't for everybody. Many parents and administrators believe
that music is just a waste of time and doesn 't help a student academically. It has been stated and
shown in media of all sorts that music doesn't help kids academically and is only a distraction with

in school,: "Music programs in school can promote competition and rivalry among peers. In most

emotional. MCR was active from 2001 until their disbandment in 2013. Hailing from New Jersey,

all, they tapped into raw human emotions and gave them a soundtrack, and brought a strong

It was the night that I went to see and support my friend's middle school band performance. I

Musical Event : Uga Percussion Ensemble Essay
On April 6th, the University of Georgia had a musical event entitled "UGA Percussion Ensemble." It
was held at Hugh Hodgson School of Music in the Ramsey Concert Hall. There were eighteen
talented performers with two skilled directors. The directors were Mr. Timothy K. Adams Jr. and
Ms. Kimberly Toscano Adams. There was a total of seven percussion performances. The venue was
smaller than expected but it was breathtakingly beautiful. The musicians played old and new
percussion pieces. Newly composed pieces such as Burning Green, composed in 2013, The Frame
Problem, 2003, and The Loneliness of Sana Claus, 1994. The older pieces that performed in the
concert where Rite of the Black Sun, Off–Axis, and Mark V: Marimba Toccata. All of the musical
works were beautifully composed percussion pieces, and the musicians did the works justice. The
first performance was performed by Bradley Robinson, Lauren Floyd, Quintin Mallette, and Wesley
Sumpter. This group of gifted musicians performed Rite of the Black Sun (1980) composed by Anne
LeBaron. This percussion quartet executed this difficult piece with great skill and I was truly

Mrs. Bartle employs a little bit of four of each of the methods shared in (the vocal pedagogy) class.
She uses a lot of the Westminister method but borrows from the others. The others she borrows from

On Tuesday, April 11, I attended the University of Evansville's Springs Classic Wind Ensemble
production, which was performed in their Neu Chapel Sanctuary. The wind ensemble was composed
of approximately forty–five performers. The various instruments included piccolo, bassoon,
euphonium, as well as the typical wind and brass instruments such as clarinets, flutes, trumpets, and

technology and the horrific contentment that society has with automobile wrecks. Written during the
1940's Shapiro has been known for writing about simplistic things yet with grave detail. In Auto
Wreck Shapiro uses similes and metaphors to describe a surreal feeling of an automobile wreck. He
has determined that everyday citizens have become too detached from the everyday violence caused
by automobiles. Shapiro aims to prove that the mechanical monsters that threaten everyday life have

I got up from my seat on the floor against the lockers and walked into the room. Sitting at a table
facing the wall was a line of adjudicators who would judge my playing ability and determine
whether or not I pass. I placed my music on the lone stand in the middle of the room. My mouth
became dry and my hands started to shake more vigorously. I started to play. My first task was my
chromatic scale, every note that my instrument, clarinet, is capable of playing. Something that
outside the audition room that would otherwise seem elementary for me, however, I was incapable

Personal Narrative: How Music Therapy Changed My Life
When I started band, I was in the sixth grade, which was a year later than a lot of people in my band.
Neither my parents or step–parents were in band, so they were hesitant to let me join. Once I was in
Mr. Sacco's music class, and got to experience what his personality was like (super fun, caring, and
spunky), and told my parents. I joined band immediately, or as soon as I could, sixth grade. Even
though I was a year behind, my band director as well as the others in my section helped me a lot.
Since the beginning of my band experience, I have made many close friendships and had a ton of
amazing experiences that may not have happened if it weren't for band. Everyone always has the

The Brigham Young University presentation of the University Chorale on December 10th consisted
of two choirs: The University Chorale Evening choir, and the University Chorale Day choir. Both

The most powerful moment that has happened to me involving music happened in the middle of my
seventh grade year. Prior to seventh grade, I played the violin but desired to learn the Double Bass. I

say that I am happy with my life and that I finally found something worth living for. Today, in my

What Factors Affect The Sound
There are many factors that contribute to an ensembles' sound. Most of which we spend our musical
lives practicing; things like tone, vowels, diction, ect. As we begin to make the transition from
ensemble member to leader we are thrown yet another contributing factor to sound: conducting. The
art of conducting is a continuously growing set of skills for an individual. Many of the greatest
conductors have spent decades perfecting their craft and creating their style, while building their
musicality. One element that sets apart the greatest of conductors is expressivity. Proper expressive
gesture can influence not only audience perception of an ensemble, but also the ensemble sound.

The answer to this is unfortunately unknown, however that is not to suggest that conductors and
their gestures don't make a difference. Gumm (2012) suggests that musicians actually synchronize
more accurately in performance with an expressive conductor. Acklin (2009) notes that choirs
perform with better precision without a conductor than with a strictly metric conductor (p. 26).
Although research is limited in regards to the influence a conductor has over ensemble sound, it is
comforting to know that this phenomenon is not just figurative, but simply unverified.
Despite the limit of research in this field there are some studies that may explain rather specific
implications of conducting gesture on ensemble sound. Again I would like to refer back to our use of
physiological and psychological variables, but this time link them to conducting factors by
conjoining physiological factors to technical and psychological to expressive factors. Gumm's
(2012) article relays six basic functions of conducting and how these functions relate to either
technical or expressive aspects of conducting.
For technical aspects Gumm (2012) dictates three functions: Mechanical precision, physical
technique, and unrestrained tone. Mechanical precision is basic conducting elements such as beat,

A Study On Wartburg College
Wartburg College is nestled in the small Iowa city of Waverly population 10,106. The small campus
of 1,482 is arranged so it is very close together and most buildings are connected by skywalks. Since
the private college is so small, the average class size is eighteen, and the student to faculty ratio is an
impressive 11:1. Of the 1,482 students at Warburg College around 450 are involved in music in
some way. This shows a strong emphasis on and belief in music. There are currently fifteen choral
and instrumental ensembles at Wartburg and there is always potential to be more. They allow people
to form music ensembles and have them supported by the school if a faculty member will sponsor it.
They even have a community symphony that some selected students can play in. With this, the
students can interact more with the Waverly community and form some important business
connections that they can call on in the future. All the ensembles are open to music and non music
majors and they are all open to incoming freshman. Students do not have to be an upperclassmen to
make it into one of the three internationally touring ensembles. Wartburg college has a 4–4–1 class
schedule and this allows the touring ensembles to travel in what they call "May term" or the 1 part
of the class schedule. During that time they only take one class for the whole month of May and
really immerse themselves in it. It is also at this time when most people plan their study abroad

Nepalese Music Band: Nepathya
Nepathya is a music band that was formed in the early 1990s. In 1990, nine young boys started a
band from beautiful city called Pokhara, Nepal, which is now famous by the name "Nepathya".
They were nine different people but came together to achieve a goal, met at Kathmandu during their
college and formed a "Nepathya". At first, they used to sing in the concert in the street and in the
restaurant. As time passed by they began to broadcast through radio. They started to begin famous
among people. Later, in 1995 they released their first album named "Tal ko Pani" which was loved
by the whole country. After that, they continued their journey of music and till date they released 15
albums. Among them, "Resham" is the most popular song and also one of my best songs. In their
struggling phase, the band only sang the folk song with the theme of nature and love, but as the time
passed they started singing the song based on patriotism, peace, and issue of the country. They
started their career by singing the song that focuses on love and nature because the type of song they
used to sing mostly loved by the audience. They sang a song which is more oriented to the audience.
At the time of the civil war, people were concerned about their own and their families security. As
the environment changed people changed the theme of the song. The band member started to sing

Concert Review: At The Movies
Saturday, March 5th, Tim, Thomas, Hunter and myself drove out to Lexington to watch the show
put out by the Met Winds called "At the Movies". This show's premise was how important and
impactful music in a movie or performance can be. From the importance not only added my music
in a scene with suspense or terror to heighten a mood but also for example in the show when a man
in a chariot is making his way around an arena filled with thousands of people without the music it
was very prosaic. This show was truly a learning experience for me about not only the master class

This was an act that myself and my classmates enjoyed. Looking down the row of chairs of my
friends we were all laughing along with the rest of the crowd watching a college student dressed as
Godzilla jump, run and even dance with the audience in an attempt to bring the music alive and have
the audience gain a feeling as they are part of the movie or scene. There was a slide show put
