There are approximately 700,000 orphans in China, mostly girls, due to China's one-child policy. Orphans are adopted between ages 1-16, and show relief at being held by their new mothers. However, their emotional problems are not over as they may develop Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) from lacking emotional connections in their first two years. RAD causes orphans to be scared of and deny trusting their adoptive parents due to feelings of abandonment. Treatment requires adoptive parents to form strong bonds with orphans, show unconditional love, and help them process emotions like grief in order to heal from past trauma.
