Child abuse is a serious problem in the United States, with over 5 children dying every day due to abuse and neglect. Reports of child abuse are made every 10 seconds, and in 2009 there were over 3 million reports involving around 6 million children. Children who experience abuse are more likely to engage in criminal behavior and violent crimes as juveniles and adults. Poverty is a significant risk factor, with children in families below $15,000 annual income 25 times more likely to experience neglect or abuse. Child abuse costs over $100 billion annually and can have generational impacts if behavioral patterns are passed down through families.

A conversation examining the unique and complex factors contributing to the street youth crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean in our NEW MicroProjects Series.
More than 100 million children are homeless worldwide, approximately 40 million of which live in Latin America and the Caribbean. Children living on the streets are especially vulnerable to victimization, exploitation, and the abuse of their civil and economic rights. Children often experience the effects of political, economic, and social crises within their countries more severely than adults, and lack the adequate institutional support to address and protect their special needs.
Attached is is the presentation by Avanse and Baker & Mackenzie's, Erin Broderick, an attorney dedicated to street youth advocacy, in a discussion regarding the legal, political, economic, and cultural factors that have perpetuated the street youth problem in Latin America and the Caribbean, the potential for change through global cooperative efforts, and the benefit to the US from investment in the initiative.
The Avanse MicroProjects are a series of focused initiatives intended to identify, cultivate and execute long-term solutions to the everyday obstacles faced by street kids. The program is structured to motivate our community to get involved in the process of developing solutions and directly contribute to advancing the lives of street kids in Latin America and the Caribbean. The series will continue every 4th Tuesday of the month where YOU, our partners, and Avanse will identify solutions to develop programs that impact these street kids' lives based on the research we conduct.

Family life in the us
The traditional nuclear family structure of two married parents raising biological children has become less common in the United States. Alternative family forms such as single-parent households, unmarried couples living together, and same-sex parents have grown in prevalence due to factors like higher divorce rates, women increasingly working outside the home, and greater social acceptance of diverse living situations. However, the family unit remains an important part of American society, even as families have become more mobile and family structures more varied.
Father's Day
1) Approximately 1 in 5 children under 18 in the US have emotional, behavioral or developmental problems, and 1 in 4 US teenagers have at least one of these issues. Boys are more likely to have problems, with close to 1 in 3 teenage boys affected.
2) Children from broken homes or who did not grow up with their father are more likely to experience negative outcomes like poverty, dropping out of school, and mental health issues. They are also more vulnerable to illness.
3) The idea of human and civil rights alone is superficial; true dignity comes from recognizing that God's rights are equally our own and putting ourselves on an equal level with God.

Sexism defines traditional gender roles that view women's work as domestic and of no economic value. This leads to women being paid less than men and lacking rights such as voting. While progress has been made, sexism continues to negatively impact women through issues like sexual harassment, violence, and lack of reproductive rights.

Poverty also increases the likelihood of removal due to exposure bias, though poverty alone does not increase the likelihood of abuse or neglect. Native American, African American, and Hispanic children experience higher rates of referral and time in foster care compared to white children.

KEAIRA BROWN WAS JUST 13 YEARS OLD when she was charged with murder and became the youngest person in Wyandotte County, Kansas, ever to be tried as an adult. Her family life was close but troubled. Her mother, Cheryl Brown, had three other children, two enrolled in local colleges. Keaira was involved in after-school activities, including playing the violin. But when her mom went to prison on a drug charge, things began to spiral downhill for Keaira, and when she was only 10 she attempted suicide. On July 23, 2008, at about 4:00 PM, Keaira was supposed to be at a summer program at the Boys and Girls Club in Kansas City. Instead, she was involved in the carjacking of Scott Sappington, Jr., a junior at Sumner Academy, who had just dropped his siblings off at their grandmother’s house. When he returned to his car, neighbors heard him yell, “Hey, hey,” then there was a struggle inside the car, and he was shot in the head. An investigation led to a 6-year-old who told police that a young girl told a group of children to get rid of her bloody clothes. Police distributed pictures of the bloody clothes to the media, and soon after, the clothes were traced back to Keaira Brown.
Prosecutors thought the murder was a result of a carjacking that went wrong, while Keaira’s family claimed she was an innocent pawn for area gang members who thought she woul.
