Mobile augmented reality to support basic education in Mexico

This study compared student performance on quizzes using clicker devices versus Scantron forms, and surveyed student preferences between the two methods. The results showed: 1) There was no significant difference in student quiz scores between the two response methods. 2) Students significantly preferred having a response method over no preference. They preferred Scantrons for being tangible and comfortable, and clickers for being easy and fast. 3) Reasons for preferences included ease of use, speed, ability to see answers, and familiarity with the method.

Different methods and techniques have been implemented to counteract such numbers, and the support of serious games (video games that both entertain and educate) is one of them. Recently, video games demand has increased in Mexico, which indicates that they are already a common place. This paper presents the development and usability evaluation of a serious game intended to supporting and improving reading comprehension skills of third graders (ages 8-9 years old) from Mexico.

This document summarizes research conducted to inform the design of a serious game to improve reading comprehension in third graders. Surveys and usability testing were conducted with 76 children in Mexico. The surveys found that computers were the most used technology and children spent an average of 51 minutes per day on computers and 24 minutes reading. Usability testing of 4 games found that strategy games were difficult, 3D movement was challenging, and role-playing games were most enjoyable. The research will be used to design a reading comprehension prototype game.

ABSTRACT Mobile technology is becoming prevalent in today’s society. Yet despite the widespread use of Internet-accessible mobile devices, very little research has been undertaken to examine the value that mobile technology may have (Cheung & Hew, 2009), especially within the milieu of higher education. With ever-expanding technological capabilities and rapidly increasing student use of sophisticated mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets (Chaffey, 2017; Chang, Lai, & Hwang, 2018; Guri-Rosenblit, 2009; Peng et al, 2009), it is imperative that educators consider the impact that these devices may have—particularly when it comes to the affordances such devices provide for mobile learning in the digital classroom (Demmans Epp, Watanabe, & Swann, 2017). This paper reports on the demographic and descriptive findings from a three-year study on online graduate-level students’ perceptions and experiences with mobile devices that provides some insight into the relationship between graduate level learners, their online learning contexts, and their use of mobile devices for learning. The results indicate that: (1) the use of mobile devices for learning is common among these students, and (2) these devices and how they are being used are rapidly evolving to provide nearly seamless continuity of formal learning for the increasingly mobile learner.

Mobile learning anytime, anywhere: What are our students doing?

Recent developments in mobile technologies have provided unique opportunities for learning and teaching. This paper reports on recent research undertaken at a regional Australian university in order to understand how higher education students are using mobile devices to support their learning. A survey instrument was developed and deployed and the data collected analysed quantitatively. Upon analysis, these data demonstrate that students are predominantly using laptop computers to support their learning, but their use of smart phones and tablets are also used for a number of specific learning activities. Further analysis indicates that in spite of the limitations in the formal university infrastructure, many students would like to use their mobile devices for formal learning as well as informal learning.

Los participantes, tanto estudiantes como profesores, disfrutaron del juego y mostraron interés en su uso como herramienta educativa, aunque se identificaron algunas áreas de mejora como la interfaz de usuario y los controles. This document describes research into developing reading skills in children with Down syndrome through the use of tangible interfaces. The study implemented a methodology called "Down syndrome: reading and writing" using tangible technology. Preliminary evaluations of prototypes showed that the children found the system interesting and engaging. They maintained attention during activities and wanted to continue using the prototype. Further development and long-term evaluations are needed to measure learning progress compared to traditional teaching methods. The goal is to create a system that makes the learning process faster and better for children with Down syndrome.
