Sex education provides instruction on issues relating to human sexuality, including relationships, anatomy, activity, reproduction and health. While traditionally considered taboo, sex education was introduced in schools in the late 19th century. However, adolescents still received most information informally until the late 20th century. The AIDS epidemic increased the urgency of sex education, seen as vital for public health. While controversial, most parents and students support sex education in schools, though LGBT topics remain divisive due to some viewing them as inappropriate or a violation of religious beliefs.

The document describes an exercise where participants line up and take steps forward or backward based on statements about their social status and experiences related to race, class, gender and other factors. Taking steps backward places them farther from "well-paying jobs" up front. At the end, they run in a "race" for the jobs, but are told the winners were actually predetermined by the ruling class watching. This is meant to illustrate how unequal access and systemic inequalities affect individuals' opportunities.

The roundtable participants discussed how healthcare benefits shape the labor force in three unexpected ways. First, benefits remain an important factor for recruiting talent, so many employers are choosing not to change their coverage despite the ACA. Second, some employers are using their benefits as a competitive advantage over companies moving employees to the exchanges. Third, concerns exist around the quality and access to care as more people enter an already strained healthcare system.

This document discusses human rights and the role of the state in realizing human rights. It introduces the five traditional types of human rights and explains that states have three core obligations - to respect, protect, and fulfill human rights. It also discusses four procedural obligations of states regarding non-discrimination, adequate progress, participation, and effective remedies for rights violations. The document uses examples to illustrate how different actors like states, communities, private sectors, and civil society organizations can work to realize specific rights like education and fair trials.
Affirmative action perspectives documentsShelby Jones
The document summarizes research showing that affirmative action can negatively impact students who receive large admissions preferences, including those based on race. Specifically, these students tend to earn poor grades, have lower graduation rates, change out of difficult majors, self-segregate, and struggle on licensing exams. However, when matched students attend less selective schools where their academic credentials are closer to the average, their outcomes improve substantially. The research suggests affirmative action may unintentionally harm the very students it aims to help by placing them in environments where they are likely to struggle academically.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

Editor's Notes
I still don’t like our present vision statement. It does not embody one of the basic tenets of your book, which is education and economics together. In the third paragraph of the introduction of this document is mentioned Houston (education and legal ) and Dr. Odom (education and economics), moving from an old civil rights strategy toward liberation to a new civil rights strategy toward liberation. The connection is consistent and logical. At the October meeting, we generated no vision statement that suggests education and economics together. I suggested at the October meeting that we think out-of-the-box, use more than four words to describe the vision statement, but the rest of the group could not do that. Thus, I suggest phrases like this one that keep the theme of education and economics in the forefront of our minds, which what a vision statement should do. If the same or similar language does not run throughout the document, then the document seems disoriented and confusing.
Also, the mission statement still needs to be refined. As stated, it loses its appeal because the connection between education and economics not clear and not in the forefront.
Second, I still have a difficult time understanding why the CYE has vision and mission statement and the institute does not. Please explain.
Your book talks about our persistence and strength. The way we have phrased things, it sounds like we never did have these qualities. Perhaps I’m missing something here and if I am, I should be enlightened.
