The Charles Hamilton Houston Institute was founded in 2002 to promote economic independence among Black Americans. It is named after Charles Hamilton Houston, a lawyer who led the legal fight for civil rights. The Institute runs educational programs to supplement public schools, including the long-running STARS summer literacy program for young children and a Youth Empowerment Academy providing classes in various subjects. It also offers parent education programs to help families support their children's success. The Institute aims to address challenges facing the Black community and empower youth and families.
