ABSTRACT : Agriculture occupies a pride place in the country’s economy. It is the main source of raw material for India’s leading industries, providing employments to a vast number of people in the villages and towns. It also provides a large part of market for industrial goods, particularly the farm inputs like fertilizers, pesticides, implements, machinery pumps etc. It is agriculture which supplies not only food grains, beverages and nutritious food but also sustains a large number of industries. Thus it becomes vital to have knowledge about the agricultural development of the regions. In the ACRP (Agro Climatic Regional Planning) Programme the country was divided into 15 major Agro Climatic regions, later subdivisions were also done according to the homogeneity in agricultural characteristics and feasibility in terms of planning and operationalisation with reference to the geographical area covered. The Rajasthan state has well defined 10 agro-climatic zones. The state is endowed with diverse soil and weather conditions comprising of several agro-climatic situations, warm humid in south-eastern parts to dry cool in western parts of the state. About 65 per cent population (i.e. about 56.5million) of the state is dependent on agriculture and allied activities for their livelihood. Agriculture in Rajasthan is primarily rain fed covering country’s 13.27 % of available land. The diversity in climatic conditions of the state creates potentiality to develop certain combinations of crops.The present study based on secondary data is an effort to understand the performance of agriculture in the state of Rajasthan in the recent years and the importance of Agro Climatic zones for the well being of rural people.

Agriculture in Bihar: the latent sector of development inventionjournals
Bihar is the third most populous state in India with majority of its population depending on agriculture. Thus, agriculture yet forms the backbone of development. An average Indian still spends almost half of his/her total expenditure on food and roughly half of India’s work force is still engaged in agriculture for its livelihood. Being both a source of livelihood and food security for a vast majority of low income, poor and vulnerable sections of society, its performance assumes greater significance in view of the proposed National Food Security Bill and the ongoing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme. The experience from BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South African) countries indicates that a one percentage growth in agriculture is at least two to three times more effective in reducing poverty than the same growth emanating from non-agriculture sectors. Thus with proper thrust on technologies, institutional direction, farm level support services, all delivery mechanisms, improved farm infrastructure including rural connectivity , Bihar could be developed as a granary of India. It can also be developed as the major hub of fruits, vegetables, and fisheries for both national and global markets. The entire economic growth processes in Bihar depends on the dynamics of agriculture. There are successful experiments in different parts of the country, which if adopted, can provide an answer to various problems which Bihar is facing in its race to higher productivity levels. Bihar can then surely catch up with the present productivity levels of rice and wheat in Punjab and other cherished goals in maize, pulses, oilseeds, horticulture and livestock production in the next few year Plans. The paper tries to prove that if agriculture is developed systematically then agriculture can be one of the major profit earning sectors for Bihar.

2. The entire state of Chhattisgarh is situated under Rice-agro-climatic zone. 80%
population of the state is rural and the main livelihood of the villagers is agriculture
and agriculture based small industries.
3. The economy of the state is mainly based on Chhattisgarh agriculture. The
agriculture sector contributes around 38% to the State’s Net Domestic Product.
4. Paddy is the main crop in this area. Whenever there is large variation in the yearly
rainfall paddy is the main crop which directly affects the main crop.
5. With the proper facilities, use and management of available water resources it is
estimated that about 75% of the gross sown area of the state can be irrigated.
6. The irrigation potential has now been raised to 1.844 Million hectares at the end of
March 2012 which is 33.15% of gross area.
7. The entire agricultural operation is divided into two crop seasons- Kharif and
Rabi. The Kharif season starts from the third week of May and lasts till the end of
October followed by the Rabi season.
8. As Chhattisgarh is endowed with good soil, adequate rainfall and good irrigation
facilities, yet it needs to realise its full agricultural potential.
9. Chhattisgarh Agriculture provides ample supply of raw materials for the establishment of
Agro based industries. High stable and regular supply of agricultural produce provides
adequate opportunity for marketing and food processing industries.
