3.0 BACKGROUND AND PROBLEM ANALYSIS:
Analysis of the socio-economic circumstances of Refugees in Nakivale Camp reveals that due to
various socio-cultural factors, they do not often benefit from the fruits of economic growth.
Rather, economic growth often impacts their situation adversely. General socio-economic
deterioration which was occasioned by civil war exacerbated the circumstances of these
marginalized groups.
It is contended that a large proportion of youth in Refugee camp are marginalized. The worst
affected groups include: Youths with disabilities, School dropouts, The unemployed, Rural
youth, Commercial sex workers, Drug addicts, Youth living with HIV/AIDS, Victims of sexual
abuse, Pregnant girls and Teenage mothers
4.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
4.1 Goal
Promote the socio-economic status of refugees through capacity building for job opportunities
and livelihood sustainability.
4.2 Objectives
The specific objectives of this project include:
 To support refugees in small-scale enterprise development and provision of start-up grants.
 To train refuges in marketable vocational skills and provide start-up kits.
 To examine the role played by women and men in the ongoing peace initiatives at the grass
roots and community level in Nakivale Camp
 To identify and examine the role of NGOs in conflict situations and peace building processes
in the Camp.
 To draw lessons from post conflict communities to form strategies towards peace building
and reconstruction.
 To identify the traditional conflict resolution process and the level of women and men
participation in them.
 To investigate the interconnected relationship of food insecurity, gender based violence and
income-generating activities.
 To examine the efforts that Ugandan government has taken to address the issues of economic
fragility and gender-based violence.
 To find out the policies that are being formulated to address issues of governance and
livelihood revival in Nakivale camp?
4.3 Duration of the Project
The project will be implemented for a period of 24 months (September 2015- September, 2016).
4.4 Project area and Target Population
The project will be implemented in the targeted Nakivale Camp (focusing in the Refugees).
The project will specifically target female and male refugees between of all ages in Nakivale
camp.
4.5 Main Component and Activities
Consistent with the above background, problem analysis, objectives and coverage, this project
will utilize previous experience acquired by researchers over the years in the implementation of
similar project activities.
4.5.1 Small-scale enterprise development:
Refugees will be organized to undertake the following main activities for this component. This
will include: financial and management support to existing local artisan within the communities;
remedial education for trainers and trainees; payment of stipends to trainers and trainees.

Refugees will be trained in a cluster of skills identified with existing opportunities and needs in
specified locations. Overall, the following disciplines will be considered as options: Auto
mechanics, Carpentry, Tailoring, Hairdressing, and soap making. Literacy and numeracy skills
will also be built into the training programme.
4.6 Specific Activities:
Skills Training Options, Academic, Workshops, Equipment and Tools, Supervision, Centre
Facilitators, Stipend for Facilitators, Lunch for Trainees and Facilitators, Light refreshment at
Steering Committee Meetings, Launching and Orientation, Caretakers and Security, Teaching
Cost and Operational Cost
4.7 METHODOLOGY
Sample Size
From a total population of refugees, a total sample size will be 10,000 refugees. This choice
is based on the assumption that the number of 10,000 refugees is reasonable in qualitative
research to generate the necessary data to understand the phenomenon in a case study. This
section of the sample size will be used because it will help the researchers minimize
resources such as time, money in addition to other requirements.
Sampling Techniques
In order to get better results, simple random will be used. Local leaders and community
members will be simple randomly selected because they have much information about the
study problem. These techniques will be used to assist the researchers to avoid bias in
selecting such respondents to participate in the study since they are many, and this will give
each of them a chance to participate in the study.
Data Collection Methods
Data will be primary. Primary data will be collected by the use of questionnaires, interviews,
focus group discussions and observation.
 Questionnaire Survey
The study will employ a questionnaire as a research instruments for data collection. The use of
self-administered questionnaires to collect qualitative data will be justifiable on the account
that they the general acceptable instrument for qualitative data collection. Questionnaire
provides afresh and for the first time thus will happen to be original in character.
 Interview Survey
Personal interviews generally in a face to face contact or conversation using structured
questions will be used by the researchers in collecting primary data from community
members because these categories of refugees are always busy with limited or no time to fill
a questionnaire.
Research Instruments
The study will use different research instruments and these will include questionnaire and
interview guide. The study will be guided by the following research instruments:-
 Questionnaires
A questionnaire is a collection of questions based on the subject of interest to the researcher
and completed by respondents. A questionnaire will be a semi – structured, it will include both
open and ended questions for people to fill.
 Interview Guide
Personal interviews generally in a face to face contact or conversation using structured
questions will be used by the researchers in collecting primary data from community
members because these categories of respondents are always busy with limited or no time to
fill a questionnaire.
Research Procedure
Certain ethical considerations will be considered, first an introductory letter will be obtained
from Bishop Stuart University and presented to officials of Nakivale camp for necessary
assistance. Later researchers will introduce themselves and ask for permission to carry out
research in wards. After permission is granted, the researchers will first test for validity and
reliability of instruments, and thereafter they will be able to collect data from the chosen
refugees according to the agreed time schedule.
