Chesapeake Life History
Between 1813 and 1962, steamboats ruled the Chesapeake Bay, reflected in a fascinating and
important era, in which trade and travel were made more convenient with steamers that linked parts
of Maryland and Virginia, with distant and isolated rural communities along the Eastern Shore, in
particular, including Piankatank River and Occohannock Creek in Virginia, Hudson Creek off the
Little Choptank River in Maryland, Bushwood, and Rock Point It made possible access to certain
goods and services typically unavailable east of the Bay, along with opportunities for leisure and
entertainment.
There were various types of steamboats on the Chesapeake Bay, all serving a specific function. The
packet steamboats were the most common, were medium–sized and fast, and transported
passengers, freight and domestic mail. The rural areas and the city were made accessible with a
large fleet of smaller vessels–steam ferries, while excursion steamers or showboats were more
elaborate, colorful and beautifully decorated made drop–offs at popular resorts on the Bay, including
Tolchester and Betterton in Kent County.

Gentrification and White Preference in the Rhode Island...
The loss of public housing and the expanse of the wealth gap throughout the state of Rhode Island
has been a rising issue between the critics and supporters of gentrification, in both urban areas such
as Providence and wealthy areas such as the island of Newport, among other examples. With the
cities under a monopoly headed by the wealth of each neighborhood, one is left to wonder how such
a system is fair to all groups. Relatively speaking, it isn't, and the only ones who benefit from such a
system are white–skinned. With the deterioration of the economic status of Rhode Island, and

With reference to case studies, critically evaluate the success of management schemes in fragile
environments (40 marks)
A fragile environment is one which is easy to disrupt, and once disrupted, difficult to restore. An
example of this kind of environment is the Sundarbans; the largest single block of mangrove swamp
in the world, covering 10,000 km² from the coasts of West Bengal to Bangladesh. The mangrove
swamps are sensitive to a number of factors, including temperature, salinity and sea level, where
small changes may be able to cause huge impacts on the overall health and effectiveness of the
swamps to protect the coastline and the 300,000 livelihoods that depend on it.
The mangrove swamps can act as shock absorbers, protecting ... Show more content on

It is for these threats that the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve was created in 1973, and later designated as
the Sundarban Forest Reserve in 1978. It now covers the whole of the Sundarbans, aimed towards
managing it in a sustainable way. Armed forest staff patrol in motorboats and launches, protecting
the reserve from poachers and theft of forest products such as the valuable honey and wax that is
limited for collecting to only two and a half months a year, while seminars, workshops and
awareness camps are conducted frequently inside the park to educate people and tourists on eco–
conservation and eco–development. By educating people, there will be a greater understanding and
cooperation between local villagers and authorities, so locals can benefit from the surrounding
ecosystem while still protecting the environment and not completely exploiting it.
The Sundarbans Biodiversity Conservation Project (SBPC) was also put in place by the Bangladesh
government in 1999, aimed towards conserving the environment and biodiversity, as well as
reducing the poverty in the area. This included focussing on the organisation of the Sundarbans
Forest Reserve, resource management, development of the impact zone, ecotourism and
environmental awareness, technical advice, monitoring and research studies.
However, the project was cancelled in 2005 due to issues with the integrity and design

The Chesapeake Bay Watershed
Nowadays, people stay away from analyzing how their actions impact the environment producing
long lasting consequences. The opportunity to act is right where anyone stands and the closest one
to this area is known as the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Therefore, the amount of nutrients going
into the Chesapeake Bay should be reduced since the use of fertilizers has increased dramatically
over time causing water pollution and the death of many species.
The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is the largest one in the Atlantic Seaboard of North America; it
covers 64,000 square miles of the United States, starting from the bottom of New York and flowing
all the way to the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia. It encompasses the entire District of Columbia and

Even though, fertilizers are needed to supply essential nutrients to the growth of plants; an excess of
them is one of the major issues contributing to pollution in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
Fertilizers are mainly composed of two elements: nitrogen and phosphorus.(4) Throughout the
years, millions of pounds of this nutrients are applied all around the Chesapeake Bay Watershed;
everything not absorbed by the soil or taken up by plants eventually reaches the Chesapeake Bay
through storm–water runoff. This nutrients end up creating algae blooms in the water, which reduce
the amount of sunlight available to underwater grasses; not allowing plants to photosynthesize and
produce the food they need to survive. Algae then decomposes creating dead zones killing fish and
other species since oxygen is needed for any organism to live. (5) Building additional vegetation
areas to create green filters is a solution that will decrease the amount of pollutants in the
Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This will be effective given the fact that soil has the ability of breaking
down nutrients into harmless substances and plants are able to facilitate the process of water
infiltrating back into the ground and stopping storm–water runoff. Thus, more green areas will be
able to retain and control the amount of pollutants going into the bay. This

The Waste Disposal Of The Chesapeake Bay
As humanity continues to prosper agriculturally, industrially, and in population, companies, as well
as local communities, have obsessively used the Ocean to toss their waste without consequences.
The formation of dead zones has been intensified by the increase runoff of fertilizers and the
burning of fossil fuels. Enhanced primary production causes algae to bloom at a constant rate
creating a layer near the surface. This layer acts as a roof to vegetation below resulting in a lack of
oxygen which organisms use to live. According to Robert Diaz and Rutger Rosenberg, "Dead zones
have now been reported from more than 400 systems, affecting a total area of more than 245,000
square kilometers, and are probably a key stressor on marine ecosystems." Specifically, the
Chesapeake Bay has been polluted to the point where areas have now been uninhabitable to marine
life. Although waste disposal is a difficult issue to solve, polluting bodies of water endangers the
marine life, environment, and health of organisms. While the Earth's surface is seventy percent
covered in water, countries are reliant on the Ocean's vegetation, marine life and resources. By
eliminating those factors from coastal countries, many communities will suffer economically and
culturally. Specifically, countries that catch, sell or eat seafood will have to exchange their lifestyle
to meet their need for food and money in order to survive. Ultimately, drinking water is not obtained
through salt water from oceans

Dbq on Differences Between New England and Chesapeake Area...
Two unique societies were constructed by people of common origin. These English colonists
immigrated to the New World for either economic prosperity or religious freedom. During
colonization, two regions were formed, New England and the Chesapeake Bay area. The two
contrasting societies of New England and Chesapeake region were the results of diversity of: social
and family structure; health and living conditions; economy; religion and beliefs; and government
policies.
As stated in Document A, unity was encouraged among New Englanders, which developed into
close societies. The close societies often built a bond of trust within the community, knowing that
neighbors would come together during times of danger. Document A also ... Show more content on

Document F states, "The worst [among us were the gold seekers who] with their golden promises
made all men their slaves in hope of recompenses." This quote displays the major motive of
emigrants to the Chesapeake region as gold seekers, or monetary prosperity. Documents G and H
show that there were many indentured servants in the Chesapeake area. These indentured servants
were often used for the tobacco farms. Since the soil was infertile in New England, the colonists
there often focused on trade, small scale manufacturing, fishing, and other sea industries. The
economy of each region impacted its social structure, which many indentured servants and slaves in
the Chesapeake region while there was much more equality in New England.
Documents A, D, and E stress the importance of religion in New England societies. Document A
refers to working for God and follow what God has set for them to do. The New Englanders also
have beliefs that hard work was necessary and high morals were needed. They also believed in
literacy and education. Document D states, "We intend by God's grace, as soon as we can, with all
convenient speed, to procure some Godly and faithful minister with whom we purpose to join in
church covenant to walk in all ways of Christ." Document

those victims...Stephanie has an allergy to shellfish, and it didn't happen till she was 24. She has
been living with multiple drawbacks since she was 24. Just all because of one tiny but major allergy.

shelters for the homeless. Include homelessness. There are three hospitals, 2 urgent care center,
Walk–in clinics, a behavioral clinic, nursing homes with extended rehabilitation, few colleges and
universities, miniature malls, many dental offices, numerous fast food chains and restaurants. There
are two sports complexes: Steinbrenner's baseball field and the Buccaneer's Stadium. Also there are
many churches, Walmart Super Center, a movie theatre and a Zoo. The people are very visible in the
community. They were observed running, jogging, walking, skate boarding, sitting on park benches,
congregating in the front of convenient store smoking and drinking beers what I believed to be beers

intoxicated, but a few of them appears as if they are under the influence of some other type of drugs.
Some of the people were clean and well dressed, while others were unkempt and scantily dresses.

Eastern Oyster History: The Chesapeake Bay
The Chesapeake Bay and the Eastern Oyster The word Chesapeake, although there is some
scholarly dispute, likely means "Great Bay of Shells" or "Great Shellfish Bay" in the language of the
Algonquian Native Americans ("Oyster History"). This translation is appropriate and accurate to
anyone familiar with the Chesapeake Bay and its rich history of oysters. The Chesapeake Bay is the
largest estuary in the United States with over 150 rivers and streams flow into its basin. It measures
roughly 200 miles in length, 3.4 to 35 miles in width and stretches across six states. The bay is home
to over 2,700 plant and animal species, making it one of the most complex and productive estuary
systems in the world ("Facts and Figures"). However, one species ... Show more content on

As temperatures continued to increase and diverse forms of aquatic and land wildlife began to
inhabit the area, the Paleo–Indians shifted their methods of food procurement, accordingly. About
5,000 years ago, a multitude of fish and shellfish populate the region's rivers abundantly while
forests previously dominated by conifers abate for deciduous ones that supply acorns and various
nuts; both developments provided integral food sources for the Indian population. It is also around
this time when oysters first begin to colonize the Bay ("Bay History"). By the 16th century, the
Chesapeake Bay had formed its present outline and its waters had become replete with clams, fish
such as bass and shad, and oysters. The Native American population reached 24,000 as they moved
from a hunter/gatherer lifestyle to one based on agricultural reliance of crops like corn, squash,
beans, and tobacco. The shift called for the development of permanent settlements and allowed the
society to grow in number. Brushes with explorers from the Old World were also experienced for

Importance Of Deep Sea Ports
According to the economic fundament, the success of deep sea port is helping in the economy of the
country like roads, communication and etc. this ports have a vital effect on the extension and
countries well being.Maritime history clearly stated about the remarkable and analytical role of
ports in countries like Britain, Spain, and Portugal's increased economy.
Deep sea port has favourable effects for the enrolment and income of a country. However we cannot
deny about the advantage of trade and the surplus of balance from the goods of ports and harbours.
The series of processing taking place in the sea ports worldwide have a remarkable impact on the
economy locally, regionally and also nationally. For instance deep sea port provides a major sector
in countires like Singapore. Japan allowed to export things by port which makes them good
exporters to several countries. Conseptually, sea ports are an economic base having various effects
on the countries economy. Four major reasons for Bangladesh to establish deep sea port in Sonadia
are:
 To facilitate uninterrupted coal supply for the power plants to be established in Moheshkhali.
 To support the country's growing seaborne trade needs of the future.
 To go along with the global shipping trend of moving towards larger tonnage
 To utilize Bangladesh's geographical advantage to become a regional access door to the sea.

First, my experiment provides an organic, non–chemical weed killer, that people may use. Using an
organic weed killer does not pose a large threat as compared to a chemical weed killer. The chemical
weed killer would affect the soil, nutrients, and the water underground in a very harmful way. On
the other hand, the Bay Laurel weed killer does not pose such a large threat because of the fact that
the organic weed killer itself is a plant. There is also a price difference, chemical weed killer costs
about $15–30. In contrast, the Bay Laurel weed killer requires plain tap water and Bay Laurel
leaves. Another advantage of an organic weed killer is that it does not affect the human health as
greatly as the chemical weed killers. For example, if chemicals come in contact with the skin, it may
cause irritation and even a rash. However, Bay Laurel has a distinct, soothing fragrance. The only
time to be concerned is when the Bay Laurel has been eaten, due to the fact that it can destroy
internal organs. Even though it might take more time and effort than a chemical weed killer, it is
worth it to save our environment and the

The colonists of the Chesapeake Bay region, on the other hand, led harder lives compared to that of
the colonists of New England. The Chesapeake Bay had an unhealthy environment, bad eating diets,
and intolerable labor.
The colonists had different reasons for settling in these two distinct regions. The New England
region was a more religiously strict yet diverse area compared to that of the Chesapeake Bay. The
development of religion in the two regions came from separate roots. After Henry VIII and the
Roman Catholic Church broke away from each other, a new group of English reformers was created
called the Puritans. The Puritans came from protestant backgrounds, after being influenced by
Calvinistic ideas. When their reforms were thwarted by King James I of England, they fled to the
New World in what is now known as the "Great Migration". The Puritans were then joined by
Quakers, Protestants, and Catholics in the religiously diverse New England area. These diverse
religious factions were allowed to live freely but under the laws of New England. It was due to this
religious freedom that these people came to escape religious persecution back home. The New
Englanders had a religion–based society and religion was based on family. As the Bible highly
regarded family, it condemned adultery. Adultery was considered a punishable crime. Adulterers
were marked as impure by a letter "A" stitched on their

We stayed in Knysna for 3 nights and our hotel was nestled on the banks of a lagoon alright. While
relaxing in the hotel patio, I saw colorful birds and sea birds.
The following day, we ferried along the lagoon to the mouth of the open sea to Featherbed Nature
Reserve for an eco–adventure tour. From the lagoon, I saw the "Knysna Heads" two enormous
sandstone cliffs that stand like sentries at the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon from the sea. While
traveling by a four–wheel drive to the top of the hill, our local guide talked about the flora and
fauna, and the Blue Duiker, one of the smallest and most endangered of the antelope, found in the

the top of the hill we were treated to a stunning view of the blue skies of South Africa reflected on

along the Outeniqua Pass, deep gorges and ravines, and misty mountains.

Daphne, A Naiad-Nymph Of The River Peneus
Daphne was a Naiad–Nymph of the river Peneus in Thessalia and the daughter of the river god
Peneus. Nymphs were female spirits of the natural world and crafters of nature's beauty, from the
growing of the trees and flowers to the formation of wetlands, brooks, grottos, and springs. (Atsma)
Her father, the river god Peneus, was tried several times because Daphne would not accept any of
the handsome, eligible young men who wanted her. Her father would scold her by saying, "Am I
never going to have a grandson?" which Daphne would answer with "Father, dearest, let me be like
Diana.". (Hamilton 119) Her father would surrender from these conversations and let her off into the

Personal Narrative Essay : My Trip To Hawaii
My trip to Hawaii It was two o'clock. We were hungry and tired, so we decided it was time to leave.
After my grandma and I were in the car for a moment, I got this strong, fiery, burning sensation in
my hands. As I put my hands close to the air vent, to try to stop the sizzling feeling on my hands,
my hands started to feel normal again, but as I took them away, they felt as dehydrated, and
scorching as a desert. In this moment, I realized that I had made a bad decision. It all started when I
was about five–years–old; my grandmother told me the story of when she travelled to Kailua,
Hawaii. During her trip, she told me about the endless grey ashened mountains that looked as if the
touched the sky. She described the salty, beryl colored ocean that stretched as far as the eye could
see, and the endless vegetation. Ever since my grandmother told me her vacation to Hawaii, I had
always wished the someday I would get to witness this eye catching place. As the years past, my
grandma realized how intrigued I was in visiting Hawaii, and not intending that I would remember
for the next eight years, promised me that one day she would take me to Hawaii so I could see the
beauty of the island myself. Thereafter, I kept reminding my grandma the promise she made to me
when I was five–years–old. She eventually realized that there was no taking back what she said, and

However, the plan called for a $66 million dollar cut in capital funding for environmental program
and land preservation compared to last year's budget. In doing so, water quality improvement
projects will get hit the hardest from the budget cut. This truly was a shock to the supporters for the
Chesapeake Bay and agriculture industry because this negates the possibility of continuing the talks
on the issue of the phosphorous pollution regulation. This imposed heated issues with reports of
millions of dollars at stake for Shore farmers and billions for industries located by the bay. This
decision angered many environmental supporters. Allison Prost, the Maryland Executive Director of
the Chesapeake Bay Foundation said, "This is a sad day in the long fight to make Maryland waters
clean enough for swimming and fishing" (www.delmarvannow.com). During Hogan's political
campaign, it appeared that the phosphorous pollution regulation was going to stay in place, which
required Shore farmers to limit the phosphorous output. Even though the regulation was a move to
limit nutrient pollution into the Chesapeake Bay that was supported by the former Governor and the
researchers at the University of Maryland, Governor Hogan cut the funds in the FY 2016 budget"

Homelessness And The Tampa Bay Area
Homelessness is a prevalent social issue that many countries are trying to resolve. One area that has
a high rate of homelessness is the Tampa Bay Area in Florida. According to a homeless count
carried out by the Tampa Hillsborough Homeless Initiative (THHI) in 2016, in Hillsborough County
alone, there are, "at least 1,817 homeless men, women, and children" who have to resort to
unorthodox housing, such as spaces behind buildings, encampments, sidewalks, and cars ("About
Homelessness"). Moreover, homelessness is important because anyone can lose his or her home due
to unexpected situations. Also, every citizen needs a home so that his or her physiological and safety
needs can be satisfied. Whether these people are left without homes because of domestic violence,
neglect, financial troubles, or other circumstances beyond their control, efforts should be made to
improve their living conditions. Therefore, homelessness in the Tampa Bay Area is an important
social issue that needs to be resolved. This problem of homelessness can be solved by the solutions
that service organizations, social workers, and advocates propose.
Since the 1980's, the number of American people, "sleeping in public places increased substantially"
(Quigley et al. 38). In other words, the amount of people left without homes in the United States has
increased drastically within the past three decades. The increase in homelessness is exemplified in

Essay On India And Pakistan Geography

Research essay
It is common to see soldiers die in war, but the conflict between India and Pakistan is no ordinary
war. The conflict between India and Pakistan is so big they are warning each other with Nuclear war
impacted by physical geography. How has the physical geography of Southern Asia impacted the
conflict between India and Pakistan since the 20th century? There are three major factors that are
affecting the relationship between India and Pakistan relating to geography. These three factors are
nature, history and religion that I will be writing about. One of the ways India and Pakistan are in a
conflict is because of religion and the geography of the region has impacted religion.
"Religion is in various places, in different atmospheres. Most people believe that symbolism, beliefs
are all shaped by the world we live in" claims Elizabeth Bornman (1), this tells us most commonly
people are born into their religion. Different locations where people may have been born could have
impacted the religious beliefs of those people. Making them believe their religion is the best.

consider changing it to part of Pakistan" according to Suzane Martin (1),later on it was made official
that India got Kashmir. Which later on caused war between India and Pakistan. This decision has
had an impact on religion. Pakistan is wanting still Kashmir and it is clear that geography is

Ka Moa`E: The Tradewinds
The song that I chose to write about is "'Ka Moa`e" and it means "The Tradewinds". I chose this
song because ever since I was young I loved the Big Island, and it reminds me of how much I miss
it there. I like the line that explains the excitement of being thrilled by a loves voice. In Hawaiian
the line says "Ilihia ho`i au a i ko leo, I ka pane `ana mai me ka nahenahe." Translated in English it
means "I will be thrilled by your voice, And your soft answers. Ka Moa`e: The Tradewinds `Auhea
wale `oe e ka Moa`e Listen, o tradewinds E lawe hele nei i ku`u aloha. Who scatters my loves here

Since the lei also does represents their love for one another he says that he wants her to wear his
love as a lei and have it with her for whenever she gets lonely to remind her of him. The fifth and
sixth verses say that he does not want her to forget about their love for each other (the flowers). He
says that they will be together again and when they are, it will be a blessing like nights with fine
rain. In the seventh and eighth verses he explains how happy he is going to be when he gets to hear
her wonderful, soft voice. And he wants her to know that whatever he's doing, he will be there for
her and if she needs him he will be there for her no matter what. The ninth and tenth verses say that
their love is united by sweetness and she's his sweetheart of the seas of Kona with the dew of
Ma'ihi, so she must live in Kona by Ma'ihi Bay. The final verse says for his love, the sweetheart on
the quiet seas of Kona, to tell their story. This song is a simple love song about how much a man
misses the woman that he loves and how happy he will be when they will be able to be with each
other again. An interesting fact that caught my attention is that he used the lei as a representation of
the love he had for his woman. It's cute that he used that as a point of view. You can wear a lei, you
can wear your love. To sum it up, this mele is a love song about a man longing for his love who is

Energy East is a proposed 4,600–kilometre pipeline by the Calgary–based energy corporation

refined into oil. This is very impactful to our environment and we have seen many issues arise. Our

My Love Of Travel
For any person that went on vacations as a little kid, there will always be one that sticks out in their
mind. For me that vacation was a 2008 Disney cruise in the Bahamas. As a second grader getting to
miss school was a big deal. This vacation just happened to be during the last week of school that
year. I was incredibly excited to not only miss school but also get to go see a new place. In my
family we love to travel. I've been in 3 countries and 14 or more states. This vacation was my start
to all of these places and sparked my love to see the world. One of the reasons this vacation
influenced my love of travel was that this was the first time I had been on a big plane. I love to fly
places. Flying is a lot faster than driving places and with two brothers that makes a huge difference.
On this vacation I visited one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, one of the British Virgin Islands, and
Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. Every day of the trip we were either at port on one of these
islands or spending our day on the boat on the way to one of these islands. When we were at port on
any of the islands we were given a time to be back then we were set free to get off of the boat and
explore the island at our own pace. We took a bus tour on one of the islands but on the others we got
out and visited some of the little shops or went to the beach for a day in the sand.
One of the memories that sticks out most to me was when my grandpa and I were standing in the
water at Magens

Our watershed, the chesapeake bay stretches more than 64,000 square miles and is home to about 18
million people. The bay provides us with a lot of things like fishes, salt and water for farming etc.
But, the bay is starting to get polluted and many organisms in the bay are dying because of
sediments, algae blooms etc. One of the major problems and also a problem in my neighborhood is
sediments. Sediments forms when rocks and soil erode or weather. About 5.2 million tons of
sediment enter the bay every year. When it rains, those sediments are carried to the bay by runoff.
Because of the small size, the particles float on the surface of water and often travel long distances
during rainstorms. When there are too many of these sediments, the water

Slavery In Colonial America
By the 1630s, about 1.5 million pounds of tobacco was hauled out of Chesapeake Bay (and almost
40 million towards the 1700s). The Chespeake was hospitable for tobacco cultivation and it blew up
the tobacco economy. Sir William Berkeley became governor of Virginia in 1642. He didn't like that
most of his people were poor, unhappy, and armed, but he didn't help them out of that either.
However, he did have friendly policies towards the Indians to monopolize the fur trade. In Virginia
(1600s–1650s), there was a very short lifespan due to diseases. Many people didn't live to their 40th
birthday, or even their 20th. This made the men compete for the women that they outnumbered and
become one of the few families that existed there.
To have enough cheap labor and maintain the tobacco economy, there were "indentured servants."
There were about 100,000 of them by 1700. The servants exchanged working for transatlantic
passage and freedom dues (food, clothes, and land). The "headright" system was also employed to
encourage importing servant workers. Nathaniel Bacon (a 29 year old planter) gathered about a

Health Care, Environmental Hazards, And Building Trust...
Step 1: Gather information and identify preliminary issues.
In this case, the most important issues are inadequate access to health care, environmental hazards,
behavioral risk factors, and building trust with the Narragansett community. The first three issues
are important because they directly affect the health of the Native American population.
Additionally, building trust with the Narragansett tribe in order to perform research and
collaborative planning is the key to designing successful care programs specifically for the
Narragansett Indian Tribe. The first key issue is regarding Native Americans' insufficient access to
health care. With the percentage of unemployment within the Native American population in Rhode
Island as high as 26 percent (The Office of Minority Health, 2015), "one–third of Native American
adults said there was a time in the past year when they could not afford to see a doctor" (Parrish,

percent of the Native American population is living in poverty (The Office of Minority Health,

Native Americans are often exposed to include "surface and groundwater pollution, air pollution,

Even though, fertilizers are needed to supply essential nutrients to the growth of plants; an excess of
them is one of the major issues contributing to pollution in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
Fertilizers are mainly composed of two elements: nitrogen and phosphorus.(4) Throughout the
years, millions of pounds of this nutrients are applied all around the Chesapeake Bay Watershed;
everything not absorbed by the soil or taken up by plants eventually reaches the Chesapeake Bay
through storm–water runoff.
This

Art Analysis : Apollo And Daphne
Part One: Apollo and Daphne, a Baroque sculpture, was chiseled by Bernini during the time of the
Catholic Reformation, or Counter–Reformation. The Catholic Reformation was when the Catholic
Church began a movement to gain a larger following of Catholicism and reclaim power. As a result,
church leaders (in this case Cardinal Borghese) commissioned works of art that had a sensory appeal
and could evoke a more emotional response by capturing the attention of its observer. For this
reason, Apollo and Daphne, a marble sculpture, engages the observer with its movement and
dynamic portrayal of human bodies. With its attention to details such as texture and near life–like
portrayal, Apollo and Daphne draws in the viewer just as the Catholic Reformation aimed to draw in
followers of the church.
Part Two:
O: Apollo and Daphne, sculpted by Bernini, is a detailed marble sculpture capturing the moment

she was doing in Bodega Bay. Melanie never told the truth in Bodega Bay.

Who scatters my loves here
and there. Ahea la `oe ho`iho`i mai When will you return A he lei poina `ole ia na`u? The lei I never
will forget? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Chesapeake Life History

  • 1. Chesapeake Life History Between 1813 and 1962, steamboats ruled the Chesapeake Bay, reflected in a fascinating and important era, in which trade and travel were made more convenient with steamers that linked parts of Maryland and Virginia, with distant and isolated rural communities along the Eastern Shore, in particular, including Piankatank River and Occohannock Creek in Virginia, Hudson Creek off the Little Choptank River in Maryland, Bushwood, and Rock Point It made possible access to certain goods and services typically unavailable east of the Bay, along with opportunities for leisure and entertainment. There were various types of steamboats on the Chesapeake Bay, all serving a specific function. The packet steamboats were the most common, were medium–sized and fast, and transported passengers, freight and domestic mail. The rural areas and the city were made accessible with a large fleet of smaller vessels–steam ferries, while excursion steamers or showboats were more elaborate, colorful and beautifully decorated made drop–offs at popular resorts on the Bay, including Tolchester and Betterton in Kent County. • 2. Gentrification and White Preference in the Rhode Island... The loss of public housing and the expanse of the wealth gap throughout the state of Rhode Island has been a rising issue between the critics and supporters of gentrification, in both urban areas such as Providence and wealthy areas such as the island of Newport, among other examples. With the cities under a monopoly headed by the wealth of each neighborhood, one is left to wonder how such a system is fair to all groups. Relatively speaking, it isn't, and the only ones who benefit from such a system are white–skinned. In Boston, Charlestown, Jamaica Plains, and Beacon Hill have all experienced intense characteristics of gentrification from the 1970s up until the present, showcasing an increase in the population with at least a bachelor's degree, as well as a large increase in new and renovated buildings. With reference to case studies, critically evaluate the success of management schemes in fragile environments (40 marks) A fragile environment is one which is easy to disrupt, and once disrupted, difficult to restore. An example of this kind of environment is the Sundarbans; the largest single block of mangrove swamp in the world, covering 10,000 km² from the coasts of West Bengal to Bangladesh. The mangrove swamps are sensitive to a number of factors, including temperature, salinity and sea level, where small changes may be able to cause huge impacts on the overall health and effectiveness of the swamps to protect the coastline and the 300,000 livelihoods that depend on it. It is for these threats that the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve was created in 1973, and later designated as the Sundarban Forest Reserve in 1978. It now covers the whole of the Sundarbans, aimed towards managing it in a sustainable way. Armed forest staff patrol in motorboats and launches, protecting the reserve from poachers and theft of forest products such as the valuable honey and wax that is limited for collecting to only two and a half months a year, while seminars, workshops and awareness camps are conducted frequently inside the park to educate people and tourists on eco– conservation and eco–development. By educating people, there will be a greater understanding and cooperation between local villagers and authorities, so locals can benefit from the surrounding ecosystem while still protecting the environment and not completely exploiting it. The Sundarbans Biodiversity Conservation Project (SBPC) was also put in place by the Bangladesh government in 1999, aimed towards conserving the environment and biodiversity, as well as reducing the poverty in the area. The opportunity to act is right where anyone stands and the closest one to this area is known as the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Therefore, the amount of nutrients going into the Chesapeake Bay should be reduced since the use of fertilizers has increased dramatically over time causing water pollution and the death of many species. The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is the largest one in the Atlantic Seaboard of North America; it covers 64,000 square miles of the United States, starting from the bottom of New York and flowing all the way to the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia. (3) Even though, fertilizers are needed to supply essential nutrients to the growth of plants; an excess of them is one of the major issues contributing to pollution in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Fertilizers are mainly composed of two elements: nitrogen and phosphorus.(4) Throughout the years, millions of pounds of this nutrients are applied all around the Chesapeake Bay Watershed; everything not absorbed by the soil or taken up by plants eventually reaches the Chesapeake Bay through storm–water runoff. This nutrients end up creating algae blooms in the water, which reduce the amount of sunlight available to underwater grasses; not allowing plants to photosynthesize and produce the food they need to survive. Algae then decomposes creating dead zones killing fish and other species since oxygen is needed for any organism to live. (5) Building additional vegetation areas to create green filters is a solution that will decrease the amount of pollutants in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This will be effective given the fact that soil has the ability of breaking down nutrients into harmless substances and plants are able to facilitate the process of water infiltrating back into the ground and stopping storm–water runoff. Thus, more green areas will be able to retain and control the amount of pollutants going into the bay. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Waste Disposal Of The Chesapeake Bay As humanity continues to prosper agriculturally, industrially, and in population, companies, as well as local communities, have obsessively used the Ocean to toss their waste without consequences. The formation of dead zones has been intensified by the increase runoff of fertilizers and the burning of fossil fuels. Enhanced primary production causes algae to bloom at a constant rate creating a layer near the surface. This layer acts as a roof to vegetation below resulting in a lack of oxygen which organisms use to live. According to Robert Diaz and Rutger Rosenberg, "Dead zones have now been reported from more than 400 systems, affecting a total area of more than 245,000 square kilometers, and are probably a key stressor on marine ecosystems." Specifically, the Chesapeake Bay has been polluted to the point where areas have now been uninhabitable to marine life. Although waste disposal is a difficult issue to solve, polluting bodies of water endangers the marine life, environment, and health of organisms. While the Earth's surface is seventy percent covered in water, countries are reliant on the Ocean's vegetation, marine life and resources. By eliminating those factors from coastal countries, many communities will suffer economically and culturally. Specifically, countries that catch, sell or eat seafood will have to exchange their lifestyle to meet their need for food and money in order to survive. Ultimately, drinking water is not obtained through salt water from oceans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Dbq on Differences Between New England and Chesapeake Area... Two unique societies were constructed by people of common origin. These English colonists immigrated to the New World for either economic prosperity or religious freedom. During colonization, two regions were formed, New England and the Chesapeake Bay area. The two contrasting societies of New England and Chesapeake region were the results of diversity of: social and family structure; health and living conditions; economy; religion and beliefs; and government policies. As stated in Document A, unity was encouraged among New Englanders, which developed into close societies. The close societies often built a bond of trust within the community, knowing that neighbors would come together during times of danger. Document A also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Longer lifetimes resulted in society stability since families were formed and "grandparents invented." Document F states, "The worst [among us were the gold seekers who] with their golden promises made all men their slaves in hope of recompenses." This quote displays the major motive of emigrants to the Chesapeake region as gold seekers, or monetary prosperity. Documents G and H show that there were many indentured servants in the Chesapeake area. These indentured servants were often used for the tobacco farms. Since the soil was infertile in New England, the colonists there often focused on trade, small scale manufacturing, fishing, and other sea industries. The economy of each region impacted its social structure, which many indentured servants and slaves in the Chesapeake region while there was much more equality in New England. Documents A, D, and E stress the importance of religion in New England societies. Document A refers to working for God and follow what God has set for them to do. As temperatures continued to increase and diverse forms of aquatic and land wildlife began to inhabit the area, the Paleo–Indians shifted their methods of food procurement, accordingly. About 5,000 years ago, a multitude of fish and shellfish populate the region's rivers abundantly while forests previously dominated by conifers abate for deciduous ones that supply acorns and various nuts; both developments provided integral food sources for the Indian population. It is also around this time when oysters first begin to colonize the Bay ("Bay History"). By the 16th century, the Chesapeake Bay had formed its present outline and its waters had become replete with clams, fish such as bass and shad, and oysters. The Native American population reached 24,000 as they moved from a hunter/gatherer lifestyle to one based on agricultural reliance of crops like corn, squash, beans, and tobacco. The New England region was a more religiously strict yet diverse area compared to that of the Chesapeake Bay. The development of religion in the two regions came from separate roots. After Henry VIII and the Roman Catholic Church broke away from each other, a new group of English reformers was created called the Puritans. The Puritans came from protestant backgrounds, after being influenced by Calvinistic ideas. When their reforms were thwarted by King James I of England, they fled to the New World in what is now known as the "Great Migration". Swedish researchers Johanson & Vahlne developed a model based on a research of foreign dedication by observing patterns in the establishment chain, psychic distance and product diversification and identifying that knowledge and learning have a profound impact on how the firm is seen to approach foreign markets. • 31. Slavery In Colonial America By the 1630s, about 1.5 million pounds of tobacco was hauled out of Chesapeake Bay (and almost 40 million towards the 1700s). The Chespeake was hospitable for tobacco cultivation and it blew up the tobacco economy. Sir William Berkeley became governor of Virginia in 1642. He didn't like that most of his people were poor, unhappy, and armed, but he didn't help them out of that either. However, he did have friendly policies towards the Indians to monopolize the fur trade. In Virginia (1600s–1650s), there was a very short lifespan due to diseases. Many people didn't live to their 40th birthday, or even their 20th. This made the men compete for the women that they outnumbered and become one of the few families that existed there. To have enough cheap labor and maintain the tobacco economy, there were "indentured servants." There were about 100,000 of them by 1700. The servants exchanged working for transatlantic passage and freedom dues (food, clothes, and land). The "headright" system was also employed to encourage importing servant workers. Many slaves died on their way to America, as in 1694, a slave trader wrote that many drowned themselves or starved themselves to death on purpose (4C1). In this case, the most important issues are inadequate access to health care, environmental hazards, behavioral risk factors, and building trust with the Narragansett community. The first three issues are important because they directly affect the health of the Native American population. Additionally, building trust with the Narragansett tribe in order to perform research and collaborative planning is the key to designing successful care programs specifically for the Narragansett Indian Tribe. The first key issue is regarding Native Americans' insufficient access to health care. With the percentage of unemployment within the Native American population in Rhode Island as high as 26 percent (The Office of Minority Health, 2015), "one–third of Native American adults said there was a time in the past year when they could not afford to see a doctor" (Parrish, 2012). There is not many people from the tribe can afford health access due to the fact that 42.2 percent of the Native American population is living in poverty (The Office of Minority Health, 2015). Aside from inadequate access to health care, some of the environmental health hazards that Native Americans are often exposed to include "surface and groundwater pollution, air pollution, hazardous waste, highway run–off, illegal dumping, lead paint, radon, and biological and chemical contamination of drinking water" (Parrish, 2012).

  • 36. Art Analysis : Apollo And Daphne Part One: Apollo and Daphne, a Baroque sculpture, was chiseled by Bernini during the time of the Catholic Reformation, or Counter–Reformation. The Catholic Reformation was when the Catholic Church began a movement to gain a larger following of Catholicism and reclaim power. As a result, church leaders (in this case Cardinal Borghese) commissioned works of art that had a sensory appeal and could evoke a more emotional response by capturing the attention of its observer. For this reason, Apollo and Daphne, a marble sculpture, engages the observer with its movement and dynamic portrayal of human bodies. With its attention to details such as texture and near life–like portrayal, Apollo and Daphne draws in the viewer just as the Catholic Reformation aimed to draw in followers of the church. Part Two: O: Apollo and Daphne, sculpted by Bernini, is a detailed marble sculpture capturing the moment when the God Apollo makes contact with Daphne, who is being transformed into a tree. P: Important parts of the sculpture are Apollo's body, Daphne's body, the ground, a tree and its laurel leaves, drapery, and Apollo's signature shoes. Specific parts of Apollo's body that are significant are his facial expression, his right arm reaching behind him with his wrist flexed, his legs in a running position, and his eyes. The final verse says for his love, the sweetheart on the quiet seas of Kona, to tell their story. This song is a simple love song about how much a man misses the woman that he loves and how happy he will be when they will be able to be with each other again.
