This document provides techniques for dressing a hemiplegic patient. It outlines 3 methods for putting on shirts - over the shoulder, pullover, and overhead. It also describes how to put on and remove pants and socks. Specific steps are provided for each technique, including positioning, inserting limbs, and adjusting clothing. 3. Upper Limb Dressing
Technique

4. Method :1
Over the shoulder
1.Position : Sitting(shirt on the lap)
2.Put the affected hand into the sleeve, grasp the
collar at the point closet to the unaffected side.

5. 3. Hold tightly to the collar, and bring the collar and
shirt around the affected side and behind the neck to the
unaffected side. Put the unaffected hand into the other
armhole. Raise the arm push it through the sleeve.

6. 4.Work the shirt down over the shoulders, reach
back and pull the tail down, and then straighten
the sleeve under the affected axilla.

7. 5. Line up the shirt fronts and match each button
with the correct button hole, starting with the
bottom button

8. Removing shirt
 Reverse method of pullover technique.
 Use the unaffected hand

9. MATHOD 2:
Pullover shirt method
1. Insert the unaffected arm into the other sleeve
2. Gather the shirt back
3. Lean forward, duck the head
4. Pass the shirt over the head
5. Adjust the shirt on the involved side up and onto
the shoulder and remove twists

11. METHOD 3:
Overhead shirt method
1.Put the shirt on the lap, label facing up, and the
collar next to the
abdomen; drape the shirttail over the knees
2. Pick up the affected hand and put it into the
sleeve
3. Pull the sleeve up over the elbow.
4. Put the unaffected hand into the armhole. Raise
the arm and push it
through the sleeve as far as possible

12. 5. Gather the back of the shirt from tail to collar
6. Hold the gathered shirt up, lean forward, duck the
head, and put the shirt over the head
7. To straighten the shirt, lean forward and work the
shirt down over the shoulders.
8.To button, line up the shirt fronts and match each
button with the correct button hole, starting with
the bottom button

14. Lower Limb Dressing
Technique

15. METHOD: Pants wearing
1.Lift and cross the affected leg over the unaffected leg

16. 2.Pull the pants onto affected leg up to but not
above the knee

17. 3. Uncross the legs. Put the unaffected leg onto the
other pant leg.

18. Removing Pants
1.Unfasten the pants while sitting. Stand and let the pants
drop past the knees or push down if wearing elastic-
waist garment.

19. 2.Sit; remove the pants from the unaffected leg.
Remove the pants from the affected leg.

20. METHOD: Socks wearing
1. Sit on a bed or wheelchair
2. Grasp the affected leg and cross the affected leg above
the unaffected leg
3. Socks down the heel, Puts hand inside the socks and
extend fingers to the opening. Put toes into the sock

22. Removing socks
To remove, the leg is positioned as for putting the sock
on. The sock is pushed off with the unaffected hand

23. METHOD: Shoe wearing
1. Sit on a bed or wheelchair.
2. Place the shoe over toes
3. Looser the laces to give more room
4. Pull on the shoe at the heel by putting finger to the
back of the fingers
5. Pull both laces tight. Tie up the shoe laces: For a
person with right hemiplegia, start the lace on the
right side of the shoe so that the lace ends on the left
side at the top.

 There are some equipment which make dressing easy
for hemiplegic patient
