CARING FOR THE
SEWING MACHINE
BEFORE AND AFTER
USE
1.Keep the sewing machine out of dusty area. If it
is inevitable to place the sewing machine in a
dust-free area, make sure to protect the sewing
machine by putting a cover to avoid the
accumulation of dust.
2. Brush the parts of the sewing machine
regularly to remove the accumulated lint or thread
bits.
3. Place a scrap cloth in between the presser foot
and the feed dog.
4. Oil the sewing machine once in a while to run
smoothly.
5. Make sure that your hands are clean before sewing.
CORRECT PRACTICES WHILE SEWING
1. Sit up straight on the chair when sewing. Eyes
should be in line with the presser foot.
2. Place one foot forward and the other foot backward
to exert more force when using the pedal.
3.While sewing, do not put your hand near the presser
foot to avoid hitting the needle.
4. Place your sewing tools on the left side area
of the sewing machine to avoid them from falling
when you are already sewing a garment or
cloth.
5. Make sure that it is well-lighted on the left
side of the sewing machine.
6. Do not put your face too near the needle.
7. Make sure to remove the pins as the cloth
approaches the needle of the thread.
8. Do not put the removed pins ,anywhere.
Instead, gather it with the use of a pincushion.
CARRY OUT MEASUREMENTS AND
CALCULATIONS
APPROXIMATE- nearly but not exactly
CALCULATION-the process or an act of
calculating.
CALCULATOR- an electric device used for
speed computations.
CONVERSION- a change of figure like
changing from centimeters to inches and
vice-versa.
COST-the amount paid or charge for something
that is acquired.
ESTIMATE- to form an approximate opinion of size,
amount, and number.
IMC- Individual Measurement Chart
LENGTH- the longer or longest dimension of an
object to measure.
QUANTITY- a property of a thing that admits exact
measurement and numerical statement.
WIDTH- measurement taken at the shortest
dimension of the object to measure.
POINTS TO REMEMBER IN TAKING
BODY MEASUREMENTS
1. Ask the client politely to stand straight while
taking body measurements.
2. Use a soft flexible type of tape measure so it
will be flat on the part to be measured.
3. Tie a string on the exact waistline as a point of
reference while taking body measurements.
4. Start with either horizontal or vertical
measurements.
5. When measuring lengths, let the tape measure
hang freely for a more accurate measurements.
6. In measuring distances or widths, place the
end of the tape measure to the exact point of
reference.
7. In taking circumference, insert two fingers on
the part being measured to provide an allowance.
8. Avoid taking measurements in halves, fourths
or eights if possible
9. In measuring long sleeves, ask the client to
bend halfway his elbow.
10. Always have a ready personal measurement
chart for every client so you can be sure that all
measurements can be taken.

MEASUREMENT AND CALCULATIONS
In taking body measurements accuracy is very much needed.
While measuring, we might also need to convert units based on the
required measurement specified.
Ways to measure our body:
Horizontal measurement - Horizontal measurement is taken
from the left to right of the body figure.
Vertical measurement - Vertical measurement is taken from
the top to base of the body figure.
Circumferential measurement - Circumferential
measurement is taken around the body.
BUST
 Raise your arms and
measure around your
body
 On the fullest part of
your bust.
 Tape measure should
be align on your
nipples.
Upper bust
 Just above the
bustline
 Tape measure is
close to the armpit.
waist
Measure around your
body at the narrowest
waistline.
Allow at least two fingers
in between your waist and
tape measure for
allowance.
HIPS
Measure around your
body at the fullest part
of your hips
Usually it is 20cm
below your waistline
SHOULDER TO BUST
Measure from shoulder
to the nipple
Make sure your tape
measure is aligned to
the center of the bust
(nipple)
FRONT SHOULDER TO
WAIST
Measure from shoulder to
bust to waist
Make sure your tape measure
is aligned to the center of the
bust (nipple)
SHOULDER TO SHOULDER
 Measure from socket of
your left shoulder to the
socket of your right
shoulder
 Measure it from the back
SHOULDER TO NECK
 Measure from neck to
shoulder socket
DOWN CENTER BACK
 Measure from nape to
waist
 Measure it from the
back
Back shoulder to waist
 Measure from shoulder
to waist
ACROSS BACK
 Measure from armhole
to armhole
 Measure it from the
back
 More or less 8cm down
from the nape
fullback
 Position your tape
measure more or less
4cm down from your
armpit
 Measure it from side to
side
Sleeve hole
 Measure around the
shoulder under the
armpit
Elbow
 Measure around
the bent elbow
UNDER ARM
 Begin from armpit to
wrist
 Measure it under
the arm
Over arm
 With a bent arm,
measure it from
shoulder to wrist.
UPPER ARM
 Measure it from
shoulder to elbow
 Measure it from the
outer part of the arm
Simple Conversion in Dressmaking
CONVERSION CHART FOR
DRESSMAKING
■1 inch -2.54 centimeters
■1 foot -12 inches
■1 meter -1000 centimeters
Example of Convertion:
5inches – centimeters
(1 in = 2.54cm)
Solution:
= 5 inches x 2.54 cm
1 inch
= 5 inches x 2.54 cm
= 5x 2.54 cm
= 12.7 cm
