Benjamin franklin first used the
word “BATTERY” in year1749
when he was doing experiments
with electricity using a set of
linked Leyden Jar Capacitors.
A Battery is a device that
stores chemical energy and
converts it into electrical energy.

4. What is battery?
• Battery converts chemical energy
to electrical energy
• It contains CATHODE, ANODE and
ELECTROLYTE
• CATHODE : +ve electrode that
acquires electron from external
circuit and is reduced during
electrochemical reaction.
• ANODE : -ve electrode that
releases electrons to the external
circuit and oxidizes during electro
chemical reaction.
• ELECTROLYTE : It’s a medium
that provides ion transport
mechanism between anode and
cathode

Primary battery: It is a single use galvanic cells
that store electricity for convenient usage.
Few Examples Are:
* Zinc carbon cells
* Manganese dioxide cells, and
* Metal air depolarized batteries

Secondary battery: The storage battery,
Secondary battery is a combination of cells in
which the cell reactions are reversible.
Few Examples Are:
* Nickel cadmium battery (NiCd)
* Lead acid battery

• Lithium, an exceptionally light metal, gives the lithium
batteries the highest energy density of any battery cell.
• Thus, the can store more energy than alkaline batteries
or any single use battery of comparable size

• Sodium ion batteries are an emerging technology with
promising cost, safety, sustainability and performance
advantages over the commercialized lithium ion
batteries
• And even Lithium-sulphur technology has the potential
to offer cheaper, lighter batteries that also offer safety
advantages.
