WHY DO YOU NEED A SOCIAL MEDIA
ACCOUNT FOR YOUR BRAND?
The value of social media
varies greatly depending on
your objectives. Some
brands need to reach
potential customers to
generate leads, while
others just use it to
disseminate information.
DO NOT use social media
because everyone else is.
DO use it if there’s an
opportunity to reach your
business or personal goals.
Social media is part of your
business toolbox.
It is not a single solution;
rather it’s a collection of
solutions that deserve serious
attention. Having accounts
greatly increases the
likelihood of a potential
customer finding you. It helps
with search engine
optimization (SEO). Think of a
standard sales funnel. Social
media can widen the top of
that funnel. At the same time,
social media can escort
potential customers down the
funnel to ultimately take the
desired action.

Here’s where other consultants might tell you to start
accounts on popular sites, or “the more, the better.” I’m not
going to tell you that. Never start accounts you don’t intend
to maintain and never use a network void of your
customers. What’s the point? The whole idea is to use social
media to meet your goals. Of course I would advocate the
use of social media, but you should be wise and start out
within your resources.

Facebook is the largest network with nearly two billion
active users. I guarantee you’ll find your target audience
here. You can use a Facebook business account as an
extension of your website to engage your followers. It also
delivers a wealth of user data and insight.

LinkedIn is the professional network. While you may not
target customers here (you still can if you want), there are
opportunities to build your brand. Post jobs, participate in
group discussions, and develop business partnerships.

Twitter is immediate. It’s leaning more toward a news and
information site than a social network. This real-time
network is a great way to cover events and conduct
contests. It also lends itself to be a good listening and
intelligence-gathering tool.

Google+ is of course Google’s social network. You may have
heard it is useless. While it may not be the best network to
reach your target audience directly, it does seem like a
piece of the SEO puzzle.

Y O U T U B E
YouTube is the multimedia platform that has more than
one billion users. It’s been a staple for years and Google
owns it. YouTube allows you to share and even embed
videos directly to your site and other social networks.

Instagram is a mobile-based app with more than 600
million active users. Nearly 60% of users are under 30 years
old. Facebook owns Instagram so all of your ads and
targeting are cross-promoted among the two networks. The
shorter our attention spans become, the more popular this
network will become.

Snapchat is another visual, mobile app that lets users send
photos and videos that disappear after a few seconds. Its
Geofilters allow advertisers to create a photo filter that
users can overlay into pictures when used within an area
you determine.

Pinterest lets users organize and share images, instructions,
recipes, and other interesting items into personalized
categories on your profile. This is a good way to showcase
products.

The value of social media varies greatly depending on your objectives. Some brands need to reach potential customers to generate leads, while others just use it to disseminate information. DO NOT use social media because everyone else is. DO use it if there’s an opportunity to reach your business or personal goals. Social media is part of your business toolbox. It is not a single solution; rather it’s a collection of solutions that deserve serious attention. Having accounts greatly increases the likelihood of a potential customer finding you. It helps with search engine optimization (SEO). Think of a standard sales funnel. Social media can widen the top of that funnel.
