How Schistosomiasis Is A Parasitic Disease Caused By...
Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by trematode flatworms. This parasitic infection endemic
mostly impact impoverished nations that do not have clean running water. Schistosomiasis is
commonly found in 76 countries around the world. In under developed countries of Africa
Schistosomiasis, is second only to malaria as a cause of morbidity. Schistosomiasis affects
approximately 240 million people globally (Hotez, 2013). The main areas affected are the regions near
the equator, parts of the Middle East, Asia, South America, and the entire continent of Africa. The
mortality rate of Schistosomiasis in Sub Saharan Africa is approximately more than 200,000 each
year. Based on my research, Schistosomiasis is spread due to a combination of a lack of prevention
based education and poor living conditions. In this paper we will discuss the origin of schistosomiasis,
get more in depth about the effects of schistosomiasis, and the methodology regarding disease
prevention.
Introduction of the Disease
Schistosomes are water borne cestodes or blood flukes that use the human skin as their port of entry.
The symptoms of schistosomiasis can vary from having a fever, joint pains, bloody diarrhea, ascites,
abdominal pain, and hematuria. In the long run, patients can develop an abnormally enlarged spleen
and liver accompanied with enlarged lymph nodes. The current increase in the prevalence of
schistosomiasis has been attributed to causes such as increase irrigation schemes.

Studio 52
Studio 52 was a nightclub that catered to the rich, famous, and influential. Carmen D Alessio
considers herself to be the founder and creator of Studio 52 with help from Ian Schrager and Steve
Rubell. Clubs aren t usually known for outstanding employee care and Studio 52 is no different. The
busboys were hired mainly for their looks, not because of their customer service or interest in the
business. Working at Studio 52 was like going to a party every time they went to work. Which was
probably fun for a little while, but not a lasting career. The company culture regarding employees was
not focused on respect or employee s interests. They promoted drug use just to make sure their
employees were considered enjoyable. I don t think the employees were valued as family members or
important people, they seemed to only be valued for their looks and their ability to party. The
customers of Studio 52 were considered influential and important. I think Studio 52 respected their
status, but I think they were mainly targeted because of their ability to influence people and because
they had money to spend. By maintaining wealthy customers, they were probably able to make larger
profits and assuming the customers enjoyed their time they probably returned with ... Show more

Transactional leaders gain loyalty by forming agreements and working with their followers (Brusseau,

an exciting place to work. Her employees were willing to walk around nearly naked, mingling with
wealthy customers while on drugs. She didn t try to work with them or ask them what they want out of
their job. She gave them her expectations and they went with them without question, although the

Responses Poem
Tribute is a poem consisting of eighteen lines in three sixtains, closely resembling the form of John
Berryman s Dream Song poems. The title of Jennings poem Tribute sets up the readers preconceptions
of a poem as a celebration, and an honouring towards a person with our admiration. Instead these
ideas set in precognition are shattered when the reader begins reading the opening lines., The reader
recognises the subject to Jennings tribute being to the tall poem . On the one hand, this image could be
thought of to be a designed creation of exaggeration in Jennings own intimidation on the approach of
writing. On the other hand, the poem is unremitting in this approach, attempting to channel the
underlying and unseen issues that remain hidden in the shadows of our minds. Jennings discussion of

Jennings uses the recurring symbols of the mind and the ability to make shadows tangible or visible,

Jennings is consistently referring to within the syntax of the poem. Something that has become trivia

Environmental Effect Of Fragmentation In New England
The Eastern Cottontail rabbit has a wide variety of habitat and lives on the edge. They have a wide
variety in their selection of habitat; they will live by fields, farmlands, hedgerows, and shrubby cover
near the edges of forests. They need an area with grass and low brushy areas for escape and nesting
areas. The nest of a cottontail is usually right near the edge of a field with edge vegetation. Cottontails
love being by the edge of a field and a wooded area, but still need a lot of interior cover inside the
forest (Gaudette 1 3). Fragmentation may be the biggest threat to biodiversity. A study in New
England was tested on cottontails and the effects of fragmentation. Cottontails that lived on larger

How Does Priestley Create Tension In An Inspector Calls
An Inspector Calls is a play written by J.B. Priestly in 1945. The play, which is set in 1912, illustrates
the vast status difference in society at the time. Priestly wanted to show to the audience a more
dramatic look at the relationship between the wealthy and the poor. Priestley, a socialist, believed that
we are all part of a community and have responsibilities to look after one another. Using the inspector
as a mouthpiece, Priestley was able to cleverly convey his ideas of socialism and community under the
idea of a murder mystery. From the very beginning of Act One, Priestly emphasizes the birling

She is a character that evolves as the play goes on, understanding her role in society and how she must
look after each other. She is immediately upset at the death of Eva Smith; even with knowing which
class she belonged to, Oh how horrible! . The use of punctuation for effect, ! , shows how Sheila is the
second person (the first being Eric) so far to react so openly at the death of this young woman.
Priestley uses this to emphasize the cold nature of the upper class, and how Mr. Birling seemed almost
irritated at the fact that his night was being disturbed by such an insignificant reason, rather
impatiently . The adverb impatiently portrays Mr. Birling s cold and hard nature. This shows how
living in the upper class has made him indifferent to death and so has little emotion things like that.
Sheila understands that everybody is human, therefore everybody is equal, these girls aren t cheap

Byzantium And Atonement
In each writer s work, the atonement with the father occurs through the hero or heroine meeting the
power that controls them, the power that motivates them to complete their journey. The hero or
heroine must confront and defeat the power that controls him or her in order to procure wisdom that
allows them to complete their journey. In William Butler Yeats Sailing to Byzantium, the atonement
with the father occurs when the aging man finally talks to the sages on the mosaic wall, confronting
the ultimate power that controls the aging man s life. Yeats illustrates, O sages standing in God s holy
fire/ As in the gold mosaic of a wall/ Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre, / And be the singing

forever derives from philosophical thought and reasoning, similar to the aging man that visits the

Though line 1 and the beginning of line 2, where the speaker summon[s] up remembrance (2),

the past occurrence for which the speaker grieves. Due to the sonnet s constant shifts between past and

this tension between past and present, as Shakespeare [invents] a new verb (Vendler 167) to
distinguish the two. In the fourth line, Shakespeare delves deeper into his flashback, recounting his old

The Role Of Economic Development As Measured Through Levels
Gender inequality has been and is still a problem being faced worldwide. It has inhibited the social,
economical, and political growth of women in all different nations, especially third world
countries. There are various implications that change the level of inequality such as education, culture,
religion, democratization of countries, years of independence, and most importantly, economic
development. (Dollar Gatti, 1999). This paper is examining the role economic development as
measured through levels GDP (low, medium, high) plays in the level of gender empowerment in a
country. After reading various studies, I have concluded that when regarding gender empowerment it
is specific to the empowerment of women It is hypothesized that increased economic development
will display higher levels of gender empowerment. The following three literature reviews will
demonstrate and support the hypothesis. The first article, Gender Inequality, Income, and Growth: Are
Good Times Good for Women? by David Dollar and Roberta Gotti, is a cumulated work that was
published by The World Bank under the Development Research Group. Dollar and Roberti addressed
three specific questions that they felt were strong factors in the implications economic development
brought upon gender empowerment. The questions were constructed in efforts to respond to the
macroeconomic data revealed through its answers. The questions are: 1. Is lower investment in girls

The New Industrial Revolution And The Digital Age
Unfortunately, the rash of external mandates such as transitioning to the Common Core, delivery of
PARCC testing and implementation of HIB legislation has overshadowed what an exciting time it is to
be in education. The Digital Age has ushered in an ever expanding digital infrastructure where access
and the ability to connect is becoming ubiquitous. Furthermore, the democratization of the web offers
individuals opportunity to not only act as critical consumers of information, but also exist as trusted
producers of public content. As Chris Anderson states in Makers: The New Industrial Revolution,
Today we are spoiled by the easy pickings of the web. Any kid with an idea and a laptop can create the

Labelling can occur by diagnosis of an illness or disability from a medical professional, to avoid labels
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is used. The DSM contains the

Themes And Symbols In Cormac Mccarthy s The Road
Symbols that Walk on The Road Certain objects and set pieces in a story can be more influential than
others and can help in setting a different mood or tone. These objects are known as symbols and are
very prominent in stories like Cormac McCarthy s, The Road. The Road tells the tale of a man and his
son who have found themselves in a post apocalyptic world. This new setting has caused the
temperature to drop and is the catalyst for the start of the character s journey to the South in search for
a warmer climate. As they embark on their journey, many events stop them like a gang of cannibals,
extreme weather, and even themselves. Many objects in this new world are reflected by the setting and
as a result, they have more meaning and symbolism than if they were in other settings of fiction.
Symbols throughout The Road that are the best at conveying their meaning include the mirror, the
trout, and the trees. While in a house, the man and the boy find a mirror which the man almost shoots
until the boy reminds him that it is only their reflection. The mirror in the passage represents the
conflict of the apocalypse and shows how the conflict affects the characters. It shows that there isn t
much trust between people as there was before the apocalypse. For instance, in The Road it says They
came upon themselves in a mirror and he almost raised the pistol. It s us, Papa, the boy whispered. It s
us (McCarthy 132). This evidence shows that the man doesn t trust anything anymore

Role of Children s Television in the Global Marketplace...
Abstract
It was not long ago that there was wide agreement among broadcasters, scholars, educators and
parents concerning the ultimate goal of children s television programming: to educate. Today, it would
be difficult to find even two people to agree on such terms. Popular opinion would lead us to believe
that broadcasters now seek to exploit the youngest members of their audience turning them into life
long viewers (and consumers). Scholars and educators woefully condemn television for the dumbing
down of America. Parents, no longer present during all television viewing hours, may not even be
aware of what their children are watching. When we add an international perspective into the mix, we

The first (and most common) is Open Sesame. In this format, the opening and closing segments of the
show are made locally, but the rest of the program is compiled from material produced by the United
States and leased to the foreign country.2 The second method (and the one most commonly touted by
CTW ambassadors) is co production. In this method, foreign nations play a larger role in the
compilation of footage for the show: some is produced locally, some is from the United States. As of
1988, there were 15 co productions worldwide, and that number has remained quite constant since that
time.3 The U.S. version uses little, if any, foreign material.4
CTW remains a not for profit U.S. corporation with a 1994 operations reserve fund of $34 million and
an endowment of $71 million.5. Foreign franchisers of Sesame Street are restricted by an agreement
with CTW that does not permit the program to be aired with commercials. All profit comes, in turn,
from toy sales and is immediately turned over and utilized by the extensive research design system
that is unique to CTW and Sesame Street. 6
It is, in fact, the CTW research system that has drawn the most criticism from the global front. The
system implements two types of testing: formative and summative. Formative tests are those
conducted prior to broadcast, and

Themes of Regionalism in Cather s A Wagner Matinee Essay
In 1904, a female author, by the name of Willa Cather, published a short story, A Wagner Matinee.
Highly educated and informed, Cather demonstrated realism techniques and language throughout the

Wagner Matinee strongly contradicts literary techniques and devices of Romanticism while
emphasizing regionalism, a form of realism. In comparing and contrasting literary techniques and

Analysis Of Soltice And Ransom By Tracy K. Smith
In her collection of poetry Life on Mars, Tracy K. Smith brings real world problems into focus with
Solstice and Ransom . The main idea in Solstice is the geese that forced the Hudson River plane crash
in New York, while Smith writes of the Somalian pirates and sea pollution in Ransom . However,
these are just the literal meanings behind the two poems that have deeper meanings relating to the
state of the world and how humans are playing a role in it, politically and physically. There is a
constant struggle in the poems Solstice and Ransom that where there is always an underdog, whether
it be protesters attempting to make a change or Somalian pirates fighting back because their fishing
waters have been corrupted. A main connection between these poems include their connection to the
time period that Tracy K. Smith s father passed away towards the end of 2008. Because of how
emotional and tragic this time period was to Smith, she holds onto the shreds of hope she had during
that time, including two major events portrayed in the poems. The literal meaning behind the poem
Solstice is the geese that caused flights to be disrupted at the JFK airport. These geese also flew into
pilot Chesley Sully Sullenberger and killed all engine power, making him perform a miracle crash
landing into the Hudson river. Ransom captures the story of Somalian pirates and why they have
naturally been forced into hijacking ships to make a living. The Maersk Alabama hijacking in early

Lord Of The Flies Wrongness
Evil is an Inborn Trait in Mankind Jeremy Griffith, an Australian biologist, once stated that humans
[are] fundamentally [either] good or bad, we learnt to avoid...the...subject so much so...that the human
condition has been described as the personal unspeakable , and as the black box inside of humans they
[cannot] go near. Is the reason for this description because humans do not want to acknowledge the
darkness lurking within? William Golding reveals what is inside that black box and exposes the reality
of the human condition through his novel, Lord of the Flies. The novel shows how the suppression of
evil becomes a difficult task without the presence of rules or punishments. As well, how fears and
temptations of one could possibly cause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By placing blame on someone else they will benefit at the expense of another, which is considered evil
since the other will suffer the consequences while the one at fault does not. Raj Raghunathan, who has
a Ph.D., explained that there are two main reasons why one would blame others: either because it
makes one feel more confident...or because it makes one appear superior to the other person. Humans
do not want to acknowledge or take responsibility for their mistakes. By placing their faults on
someone else, they feel less guilt and feel they have power over another. In the novel Lord of the
Flies, Jack and his tribe believe that [the beast] came disguised [and that] he may come again even
though [they] gave him the head of [their] kill to eat (Golding 177). They blame the beast for Simon s
death, since the beast is supposedly using Simon as a disguise. Jack and his tribe know they are at
complete fault for his death, yet do not want to acknowledge or be responsible for their actions. They
believe that blaming the creature on the island will prove their innocence of the situation.
Furthermore, in the novel, Piggy comforts Ralph by stating that it was an accident, ... that s what is
was. An accident. His voice shrilled again. Coming in the dark he had no business crawling like that
out of the dark. He was batty. He asked for it (Golding 173). Ralph and Piggy do not blame
themselves for taking part in killing Simon because acknowledging their wrong would mean they
would have to accept the fact that they are no longer superior to Jack and his tribe. Ralph and Piggy
use blaming as a defense mechanism, allowing them to eliminate their guilt and for them to continue
to believe they are still good within, not evil. To sum up, the act of deflecting the blame off one s self
so that one is not held responsible and to also rid of their guilt to remain superior, is where the evil

Can Students Have Too Much Tech By Susan Pinker Analysis
In the article Can Students Have Too Much Tech? Susan Pinker explains the pros and cons of
technology in the classroom. Her argument is supplemented by Studies from Duke University and
Stanford University. She also utilized the history of the One Laptop per child nonprofit, along with her
own research and opinions.
Pinker uses the studies from Duke and a Stanford Professor s opinion to support her argument with
evidence that can t be denied. The study from Duke suggests a negative trend in student s Math and
Reading scores that hits especially hard from the 5th to 8th grade. In my experience from the 5th to
8th grade I used my family s computer to play runescape and write emails to my extended relatives.
Pinker supplements her theory with a similar opinion from a Standford Professor. The Professor
comes to the conclusion of an initial surge in engagement in studies with a sharp decline after little
time. This all summarizes to show a clear negative effect of students using the home computer. ...

by chatting online and playing video games. I think that trying to give every child access to the
internet is a good theory but has issues with execution. I would make the software on the computers

Roger s Influence On The Life Of Mr. Bacon
One of Roger s biggest influences, Aristotle, had been banned in the University of France, where
Roger wanted to work. In the 1240s they removed that rule and gave the chance for kids to explore
different thing, as they began the search for a young lecturer. Mr. Bacon had been perfect for the job,
thus he travelled over to France and began teaching there for several other years. At the years of 1247
Roger has stopped teaching and focused more on his academics, as throughout the rest of his life he
made many different discoveries things such as optics, alchemy, and the manufacture of gunpowder,

Fortunately Roger had also became successful in his art as it was displayed in many exhibits. In spite
of the fact that he enjoyed art, he had dedicated his life too science. Mr. Bacon had spent most of his
elder years in his studies working on all sorts of things. Due to the fact that Roger Bacon was alive in
the medieval period they did not give out awards or award the success of one another. Propitiously the

Combating Childhood Obesity And Its Effects
Combatting Childhood Obesity
Tanema Foster
University of Missouri Kansas City
May 4, 2016
In today s society it is easy to get caught up into living a sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle. With new
technologies, social media, etc, people are choosing to opt out of doing much active work and are
choosing to do things from the comfort of their own bed or couch. Many people choose to enjoy the
luxuries of online shopping, banking, mail, socializing, ordering food, games, and even dating!
Additionally, United States citizens have fully embraced the fast food industry for some of the same
reasons. It s much easier and cheaper than buying groceries all of the time, so many families have
adapted fast food to be the default choice for their everyday meals. Much of fast food is very
unhealthy; full of saturated fat and sugars that can induce fatal diseases and illnesses. So although we
are advancing as a nation when it comes to conventional living and technology, we are also seeing a
dramatic decline in the amount of people who are living and leading healthy lifestyles and thus an
increase in obesity. Diseases such as obesity can be prevented by simply making the right health
choices. But what about those who don t have a choice? What about the children? Today I m going to
go in to depth about childhood obesity, what it is, why it is concerning and what is being done about it.
As of 2010, nearly 35 percent of children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 are overweight and

My Experience Of Art
Since elementary school I have envisioned my life deeply intertwined with art, however, at the same
time I also knew that vision never had me living out the stereotype of a starving artist either. As a child
my understanding of artist in the work force was nothing more than the cliché vision, of a paint
covered artist smearing vivid hues on a canvas and then rushing to the nearest art gallery to sell their
work. I didn t know anything of the vast opportunities for artist or even how abundantly art is used
throughout our society. Maybe this was due to the fact I was never one of those kids who know what
they wanted to be since they were three. Nevertheless, I always had a passion to create, even when I
was determined to become the next Thomas Edison, I was looking for an outlet to create. By the time
third grade would roll around though, it would be made evident that art in its most traditional since of
drawing and painting would be the outlet I was always looking for. Understanding my niche in the
creative world would take me over a decade of self evaluation, inspiration, and research.
I never started out saying I was going to be an artist, I still did a child s fair share of doodles and
finger painting but it was never anything that raptured my attention. However, this would all change
on Christmas Eve, when my grandmother presented me with a book entitled How to Draw 120 of your
Favorite Things . Now the title was not the most original approach, the book s cover made up

Zeffirelli And Hamlet Comparative Essay
When examining Kenneth Branagh s (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli s (1990) film of Hamlet both
directors interpret William Shakespeare s work quite differently. Both films excel in different aspects
demonstrating strengths and weaknesses on either side. Branagh explores Hamlet as a vengeful
character somewhat more as Shakespeare had intended. Zeffirelli emphasizes the dialogue in the film
using the tone rather than developing the character based on hatred. However despite the films
differences they both effectively capture the overall essence of indecision leading to personal tragedy.
Hamlet s inability to take decisive action ultimately results in many of the characters dying, including
himself. Scenes such as Hamlet s To be or Not to be soliloquy in Act III, Scene I; the dueling scene
between Hamlet and Laertes in Act V, Scene II; and the bedroom ... Show more content on

By looking in the mirror, he uses it as a self confidence method to reassure himself about his plan of
revenge. Branagh s continuous efforts remain constant throughout the movie where his anger and
revenge get the better of him. His soliloquy the anger that Hamlet has towards his father s murder.
Branagh continuously illustrates his discontent for his mother and uncle. Nonetheless, Zeffirelli sets
the scene with Hamlet played by Mel Gibson surrounded by corpses, ideal for the thought of suicide.
Even so this appears to be the most sane depiction of Hamlet, as he doesn t truly seem to be
contemplating suicide. Gibson begins his soliloquy already aware of the fact that he has no intention
of murdering himself. Instead, he laments his belief that suicide is not a choice. Gibson places less
importance on the opening line, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the significance of the soliloquy
in a way of making it look like a man just thinking to

Carmen D Alessio considers herself to be the founder and creator of Studio 52 with help from Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell. Clubs aren t usually known for outstanding employee care and Studio 52 is no different. The busboys were hired mainly for their looks, not because of their customer service or interest in the business. Working at Studio 52 was like going to a party every time they went to work. Which was probably fun for a little while, but not a lasting career. The company culture regarding employees was not focused on respect or employee s interests. They promoted drug use just to make sure their employees were considered enjoyable. I don t think the employees were valued as family members or important people, they seemed to only be valued for their looks and their ability to party. The customers of Studio 52 were considered influential and important. I think Studio 52 respected their status, but I think they were mainly targeted because of their ability to influence people and because they had money to spend. By maintaining wealthy customers, they were probably able to make larger profits and assuming the customers enjoyed their time they probably returned with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the one hand, this image could be thought of to be a designed creation of exaggeration in Jennings own intimidation on the approach of writing. • 15. Themes And Symbols In Cormac Mccarthy s The Road Symbols that Walk on The Road Certain objects and set pieces in a story can be more influential than others and can help in setting a different mood or tone. These objects are known as symbols and are very prominent in stories like Cormac McCarthy s, The Road. The Road tells the tale of a man and his son who have found themselves in a post apocalyptic world. This new setting has caused the temperature to drop and is the catalyst for the start of the character s journey to the South in search for a warmer climate. As they embark on their journey, many events stop them like a gang of cannibals, extreme weather, and even themselves. Many objects in this new world are reflected by the setting and as a result, they have more meaning and symbolism than if they were in other settings of fiction. Symbols throughout The Road that are the best at conveying their meaning include the mirror, the trout, and the trees. While in a house, the man and the boy find a mirror which the man almost shoots until the boy reminds him that it is only their reflection. The mirror in the passage represents the conflict of the apocalypse and shows how the conflict affects the characters. It shows that there isn t much trust between people as there was before the apocalypse. For instance, in The Road it says They came upon themselves in a mirror and he almost raised the pistol. It s us, Papa, the boy whispered. It s us (McCarthy 132). This evidence shows that the man doesn t trust anything anymore ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Role of Children s Television in the Global Marketplace... Abstract It was not long ago that there was wide agreement among broadcasters, scholars, educators and parents concerning the ultimate goal of children s television programming: to educate. Today, it would be difficult to find even two people to agree on such terms. Popular opinion would lead us to believe that broadcasters now seek to exploit the youngest members of their audience turning them into life long viewers (and consumers). Scholars and educators woefully condemn television for the dumbing down of America. Parents, no longer present during all television viewing hours, may not even be aware of what their children are watching. When we add an international perspective into the mix, we inevitably invite phrases such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first (and most common) is Open Sesame. In this format, the opening and closing segments of the show are made locally, but the rest of the program is compiled from material produced by the United States and leased to the foreign country.2 The second method (and the one most commonly touted by CTW ambassadors) is co production. In this method, foreign nations play a larger role in the compilation of footage for the show: some is produced locally, some is from the United States. As of 1988, there were 15 co productions worldwide, and that number has remained quite constant since that time.3 The U.S. version uses little, if any, foreign material.4 CTW remains a not for profit U.S. corporation with a 1994 operations reserve fund of $34 million and an endowment of $71 million.5. Foreign franchisers of Sesame Street are restricted by an agreement with CTW that does not permit the program to be aired with commercials. All profit comes, in turn, from toy sales and is immediately turned over and utilized by the extensive research design system that is unique to CTW and Sesame Street. 6 It is, in fact, the CTW research system that has drawn the most criticism from the global front. The main idea in Solstice is the geese that forced the Hudson River plane crash in New York, while Smith writes of the Somalian pirates and sea pollution in Ransom . However, these are just the literal meanings behind the two poems that have deeper meanings relating to the state of the world and how humans are playing a role in it, politically and physically. There is a constant struggle in the poems Solstice and Ransom that where there is always an underdog, whether it be protesters attempting to make a change or Somalian pirates fighting back because their fishing waters have been corrupted. A main connection between these poems include their connection to the time period that Tracy K. Smith s father passed away towards the end of 2008. Because of how emotional and tragic this time period was to Smith, she holds onto the shreds of hope she had during that time, including two major events portrayed in the poems. The literal meaning behind the poem Solstice is the geese that caused flights to be disrupted at the JFK airport. These geese also flew into pilot Chesley Sully Sullenberger and killed all engine power, making him perform a miracle crash landing into the Hudson river. Is the reason for this description because humans do not want to acknowledge the darkness lurking within? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By placing blame on someone else they will benefit at the expense of another, which is considered evil since the other will suffer the consequences while the one at fault does not. Raj Raghunathan, who has a Ph.D., explained that there are two main reasons why one would blame others: either because it makes one feel more confident...or because it makes one appear superior to the other person. Humans do not want to acknowledge or take responsibility for their mistakes. By placing their faults on someone else, they feel less guilt and feel they have power over another. In the novel Lord of the Flies, Jack and his tribe believe that [the beast] came disguised [and that] he may come again even though [they] gave him the head of [their] kill to eat (Golding 177). They blame the beast for Simon s death, since the beast is supposedly using Simon as a disguise. Jack and his tribe know they are at complete fault for his death, yet do not want to acknowledge or be responsible for their actions. They believe that blaming the creature on the island will prove their innocence of the situation. Furthermore, in the novel, Piggy comforts Ralph by stating that it was an accident, ... that s what is was. An accident. His voice shrilled again. Coming in the dark he had no business crawling like that out of the dark. He was batty. He asked for it (Golding 173). Ralph and Piggy do not blame themselves for taking part in killing Simon because acknowledging their wrong would mean they would have to accept the fact that they are no longer superior to Jack and his tribe. Ralph and Piggy use blaming as a defense mechanism, allowing them to eliminate their guilt and for them to continue to believe they are still good within, not evil. Many people choose to enjoy the luxuries of online shopping, banking, mail, socializing, ordering food, games, and even dating! Additionally, United States citizens have fully embraced the fast food industry for some of the same reasons. It s much easier and cheaper than buying groceries all of the time, so many families have adapted fast food to be the default choice for their everyday meals. Much of fast food is very unhealthy; full of saturated fat and sugars that can induce fatal diseases and illnesses. So although we are advancing as a nation when it comes to conventional living and technology, we are also seeing a dramatic decline in the amount of people who are living and leading healthy lifestyles and thus an increase in obesity.
