All living things share eight key characteristics: they are made of cells, reproduce, grow and develop, obtain and use energy, respond to their environment, and evolve over time. Reproduction can occur asexually through cell splitting or sexually through the joining of cells containing different genetic material from each parent. DNA contains the universal genetic code that is passed down from generation to generation and allows organisms to adapt to their environments through evolution.
