This document provides an introduction to information technology. It discusses key topics such as defining IT, the applications of IT, and different categories of computers. IT is defined as using computer hardware and software to store, retrieve, and manipulate information. The applications of IT are discussed in various fields such as finance, education, government, healthcare, science, publishing, and travel. The different categories of computers explained include supercomputers, mainframes, personal computers, mobile computers, mobile devices, and embedded computers. Their characteristics and capabilities related to physical size, speed, and storage are also compared.
Computers in the form of personal desktop computers, laptops and tablets have become such an important part of everyday living that it can be difficult to remember a time when they did not exist.

computer is a calculating machine which is used to perform arithmetic and logical operation at a high speed.
A computer is an electronic device that can accept, store and process information to produce the required result.
Therefore, we can define computer as a device that transforms data. Data can be
anything like marks obtained by you in various subjects. It can also be name, age, sex,
weight, height, etc. of all the students in your class or income, savings, investments, etc.,
of a country.
Computer is a device that can solve any mathematical operation and it
operates on information or data.
Computer can be defined in terms of its functions. It can (i) accept data
(ii) store data, (iii) process data as desired, (iv) retrieve the stored data
as and when required and (v) print the result in desired format.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Discovering Computers : Chapter 1
3Pages 9 - 10
4. Advantages
• Speed: When data, instructions, and information flow along electronic circuits
in a computer, they travel at incredibly fast speeds. Many computers process
billions or trillions of operations in a single second.
• Reliability: The electronic components in modern computers are dependable
and reliable because they rarely break or fail.
• Consistency: Given the same input and processes, a computer will produce the
same results — consistently. Computers generate error-free results, provided
the input is correct and the instructions work.
• Storage: Computers store enormous amounts of data and make this data
available for processing anytime it is needed.
• Communications: Most computers today can communicate with other
computers, often wirelessly. Computers allow users to communicate with one
another.
4Page 10 Discovering Computers : Chapter 1
5. Disadvantages
• Violation of Privacy: In many instances, where personal and confidential
records stored on computers were not protected properly, individuals have
found their privacy violated and identities stolen.
• Public Safety: Adults, teens, and children around the world are using
computers to share publicly their photos, videos, journals, music, and other
personal information. Some of these unsuspecting, innocent computer users
have fallen victim to crimes committed by dangerous strangers.
• Impact on Labor Force: Although computers have improved productivity and
created an entire industry with hundreds of thousands of new jobs, the skills
of millions of employees have been replaced by computers. Thus, it is crucial
that workers keep their education up-to-date. A separate impact on the labor
force is that some companies are outsourcing jobs to foreign countries
instead of keeping their homeland labor force employed.
5Page 10 Discovering Computers : Chapter 1
6. Disadvantages (continue)
• Health Risks: Prolonged or improper computer use can lead to health injuries
or disorders. Computer users can protect themselves from health risks
through proper workplace design, good posture while at the computer, and
appropriately spaced work breaks. Two behavioral health risks are computer
addiction and technology overload. Computer addiction occurs when
someone becomes obsessed with using a computer. Individuals suffering
from technology overload feel distressed when deprived of computers and
mobile devices.
• Impact on Environment: Computer manufacturing processes and computer
waste are depleting natural resources and polluting the environment. Green
computing involves reducing the electricity consumed and environmental
waste generated when using a computer. Strategies that support green
computing include recycling, regulating manufacturing processes, extending
the life of computers, and immediately donating or properly disposing of
replaced computers.
