Chapter 4: Note Taking
 The Importance of Note taking
 Listening Attentively
 Effective Note Taking Strategies
 The outline Method

 One of the most important skill for a college student is taking notes
form your classes.
 To find out whether you have good note taking skills, work out the
following questionnaires


 Why take notes?
Taking notes for each class is important:
It encourages to pay attention to lectures
Helps to concentrate and be able to
understand lessons better
Stimulates to think about what the lecturers
have taught
Distinguishes b/w the main and the
supporting points.

 Why take notes?
Most importantly, the notes will be useful to
them later in the semester as they will have
something concentrate to or refer to while
revising for their final exams.
Hence, instead of complaining and blaming
the lecturers for being boring, students
should actively take notes to improving their
learning experience.

 Listening attentively
Remember that taking notes doesn’t mean
that you must write down every word. The
KEY to taking notes is to LISTEN
Listening is not easy thing to do. Just
because what we can hear doesn’t
necessarily mean that we listen well.
There may be distractions that may affect
our ability to listen attentively and take
notes

 Listening attentively
To listen and take notes effectively, you need
to apply the following steps:
Sit close to the front of the room.
Avoid distracting friends
Pay close attention to verbal signals
Ask, ask. Ask
Use tape recorder for your classes

There is no one best way to take notes.
Listed below are a few useful strategies that will
help you take notes effectively.

2. Become an active listener
 Listen attentively to your lecturers and
summarize the information presented
short and simple by writing in your own
words

The outline method is a popular way of taking
notes among lecturers and students.
They use this method to prepare their materials on
transparencies, on power point or when they are
writing on the board (see, p. 57)
This method is very organized and systematic as
your notes are arranged in a particular order which
will facilitate easy reading.
