The document defines key concepts in ontologies including:
- An ontology is an explicit specification of a conceptualization and computer ontologies are models of known knowledge.
- A taxonomy is a hierarchically-organized controlled vocabulary while a thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary with defined relationships.
- An ontology language like OWL must be compatible with web standards, precisely define terms, and support automated reasoning.
The Semantic Web #9 - Web Ontology Language (OWL)Myungjin Lee
This is a lecture note #9 for my class of Graduate School of Yonsei University, Korea.
It describes Web Ontology Language (OWL) for authoring ontologies.
OWL stands for Web Ontology Language
OWL is built on top of RDF
OWL is for processing information on the web
OWL was designed to be interpreted by computers
OWL was not designed for being read by people
OWL is written in XML
OWL has three sublanguages
- OWL Lite , OWL DL , OWL Full
OWL is a W3C standard
This is a brief description of Web semantics using OWL ontology. Ontology languages allow users to write explicit, formal conceptualizations of domain models
The main requirements are:
a well-defined syntax
efficient reasoning support
a formal semantics
sufficient expressive power
convenience of expression
Semantics is a prerequisite for reasoning support
Formal semantics and reasoning support are usually provided by mapping an ontology language to a known logical formalism using automated reasoners that already exist for those formalism
OWL is (partially) mapped on a description logic, and makes use of reasoners such as FACT and RACER
Description logic are a subset of predicate logic for which efficient reasoning support is possible.
Ideally, OWL would extend RDF Schema Consistent with the layered architecture of the Semantic Web. But simply extending RDF Schema would work against obtaining expressive power and efficient reasoning Combining RDF Schema with logic leads to uncontrollable computational properties.

Big Data and Harvesting Data from Social MediaR A Akerkar
The value of social media data is only as valuable as the information and insights we can extract from it. It is the information and insights that will help us make better decisions and give us a competitive edge.

Can You Really Make Best Use of Big Data?R A Akerkar
How big is big? What are the precise criteria for a data set to be considered big data? At least three major factors that contribute to the bigness of big data: Ubiquity and variety of data capturing devices for different types of information
Increase data resolution. Super-linear scaling of data production rate with data producers. Although big data has other dimensions too but these are not inherent to the "bigness" of big data.
Can we see additional value in linking and exploiting big data for business and societal benefit?
If we bring together numerous data sources to provide a single reference point then we start to derive new value.
Until then, we simply risk creating new data silos.
Whilst big data may represent a step forward in business intelligence and analytics, we see added value in linking and utilizing big data for business benefit. Once we bring together numerous data sources to provide a single reference point can we start to derive new value. Until then, we only risk creating new data silos.
