Lincoln had a vision for reunifying the nation after the Civil War by forgiving the South and moving forward. However, he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865 at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. Booth shot Lincoln in the head and escaped, but was later found hiding in a barn and killed. Andrew Johnson became president and had a different reconstruction plan than Lincoln, aiming to quickly return Southern states to the Union. However, African Americans were still denied many rights under Johnson. The 14th Amendment was proposed to guarantee equal protection and due process but was refused by Southern states.
