This document discusses the performance and challenges facing small scale industries (SSI) in India. It notes that as of March 2001, there were over 249,000 sick SSI units that had taken bank loans, with over Rs. 4,500 crore of bank credit blocked in these units. Only 13,076 units were considered potentially viable. To address rehabilitation of viable sick SSI units, the RBI constituted a working group in 2000 to examine the issue and provide recommendations, which were accepted.
