Indian markets end lower amid weak global cues

July 22, 2011 Volume: 1 | Issue: 389| November 1, 2010 INDIAN MARKET 21-Jul 20-Jul % Change COMMENTARY BSE Sensex 18,436 18,502 (0.36) INDIA NSE Nifty 5,542 5,567 (0.46) The Indian markets ended in red for the second straight trading session on Thursday as investors turned BSE Midcap 6,959 6,989 (0.43) cautious amid a few disappointing corporate results and weak cues from the international equity markets. BSE Smallcap 8,394 8,432 (0.45) Indian markets opened lower but quickly recovered to hit day's high in the early trades. However, the main Nifty Junior 11,140 11,253 (1.00) indices were unable to hold on to their gains despite the Finance Minister stating that the pessimism over the economy was overdone. Heavy offloading was seen in consumer durables, realty, banking and pharma CNX Midcap 8,048 8,108 (0.74) stocks. The BSE mid-cap and the BSE small-cap indices saw some selling pressure as well. The annual rate of inflation in the food space decreased for the second week of July while inflation in the fuel group remained unchanged. Annual inflation in the Food Articles group declined to 7.58% in the week ended July 9, from GLOBAL MARKETS 21-Jul 20-Jul % Change 8.31% in the previous week which was ignored by the markets. The BSE Sensex ended at 18,436, falling 66 Dow Jones Ind (USA) 12,724 12,572 1.21 points. The NSE Nifty closed at 5,541, dropping 25 points. Nasdaq Composite(USA) 2,834 2,814 0.72 Market breadth was positive as 1,187 stocks advanced for 1,643 stocks which declined. S&P 500 (USA) 1,344 1,326 1.35 FTSE 100 (UK) 5,900 5,854 0.79 GLOBAL MARKETS DAX (Germany) 7,290 7,221 0.95 The euro surged the most in six months and stocks rallied as European officials detailed a plan to halt the Nikkei 225 (Tokyo) 10,010 10,006 0.04 region’s debt crisis. Treasuries fell and the Dollar Index slid the most since December.
