Adolescence is a transition period between childhood and adulthood that is marked by puberty and physical changes. There are cultural rites of passage that signify becoming an adult. G. Stanley Hall viewed adolescence as a stressful time, but Margaret Mead argued that problems were caused more by industrialized society than adolescence itself. Hormones trigger puberty which includes growth spurts and development of secondary sex characteristics like breasts and pubic hair in girls and boys respectively. Teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases are social issues during adolescence.
