Channel 5 is wholly owned by Northern & Shell

significant force in British and worldwide media. That ambition was developed
through a broad portfolio of magazines and broadcast interests
At present 94% of all UK households can receive Five, equating to around 54.3m people.
However, Five be seen in 100% of homes in the UK by using digital technology (freeview,
digital satellite)
The remit states that Channel 5 provides ‘high quality and diverse programming’
An FAQ on the Channel 5 website asks “Does Five have a minority programming?” to which
Five answered: “Channel 5 aims to be modern mainstream television with a distinctive and
fresh new look. The programmes are designed to appeal to the widest possible audience in
the hope that everyone will find something of interest to them. We have no plans to show
programmes aimed at any one minority.”
Channel 5 has aired documentaries on Art, Philosophy and Religion. However, these
documentaries are no longer produced, but sometimes repeated.
Channel 5 states in its remit that it is designed to appeal to the widest possible audience, but it
does not produce art and culture shows anymore. Therefore it would not be a suitable channel
for our documentary.
