- 2. General Information • Channel 5 was launched as the UK’s fifth and final terrestrial broadcaster on 30th March 1997, after BBC1, BBC 2, ITV and Channel 4. • It is the fifth most popular channel in the UK, with 4.2% of viewings during 2012. • During the past year, there are over 30 million viewers watching Channel 5 any given week. • The channel was the first analogue network in the UK to use a digital on-screen graphic.
- 3. Branding • The Channel 5 station was branded as ‘Five’ from 2002 until 2011. • The RTL group sold the station to Richard Desmond on 23rd July 2010, who returned the stations name back to ‘Channel 5’ which invested in more money. The official launch was on 14th February 2011.

Ownership • Channel 5 is currently owned by Northern & Shell – owned by Richard Desmond. • Northern & Shell was founded in December 1974. • From November 2000, Northern & Shell now own national newspapers such as; the Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star and Daily Star Sunday. They also own a variety of magazines including OK!, New! And Star.

Programming • During the past year, there are over 30 million viewers watching Channel 5 any given week. • The most popular TV show on Channel 5 is Celebrity Big Brother with an estimate audience of 3.9 million. • Other popular shows on the station include; Celebrity Wedding Planner, Killers Behind Bars, Benidorm ER and Worlds Scariest. • Channel 5 is also popular US dramas such as CSI, NCIS and The Mentalist. Other international programmes include Home and Away; and Neighbours.

- 7. Channel 5 is a entertainme nt channel with famous shows such as; Big Brother and CSI. This channel was first launched as ‘Five Live’ then changed to ‘Fiver’ and is now ‘5*’. 5* broadcasts the shows aired on channel 5 an hour later. 5USA is a channel which imports programmes and films from the US. It was launched on 16 October 2006. Demand 5 is a catch up services which lets the audience watch programmes from Channel 5, 5USA and 5* online.
