Mission
Kaiser Permanente exists to provide affordable, high-quality health care
services to improve the health of our members and the communities we
serve. To this end, we the people of Kaiser Permanente continually elevate
the state of health care with progressive products and advancements.
We extend our clinical care and total health focus to our members and
communities, offer extensive medical and health services, conduct research
programs, and provide generous community benefit funding to vulnerable
populations. All because we believe in our power to make a difference.
Our Business Structure
Kaiser Permanente’s seven regions are comprised of separate but closely
cooperating organizations—Kaiser Foundation Health Plans, Kaiser
Foundation Hospitals, and Permanente Medical Groups. Our unique
integrated health care model allows us to deliver comprehensive health
care. As the caregiver, the hospital, the laboratory, and the pharmacy, we
provide services across the care continuum. The talent of our people is just
as wide-ranging. In roles from health care and business to construction and
customer service, our professionals exhibit talent, passion, and a universal
commitment to improve the health and wellness of our members, patients,
colleagues, and communities.
Kaiser Foundation Health Plans
Not-for-profit, public benefit corporations, Kaiser Foundation Health
Plans develop, administer, ensure, and maintain the benefits we offer in
each region. Many of the decisions governing each health plan are made
locally in order to best serve unique community needs. Nationally, Kaiser
Foundation Health Plans are coordinated at Kaiser Permanente’s program
offices in Oakland, California.
Kaiser Foundation Hospitals
Our members receive care at Kaiser Foundation Hospitals’ not-for-profit
facilities. Working in conjunction with Kaiser Foundation Health Plans,
Kaiser Foundation Hospitals offer members streamlined, integrated
health care, with no claim forms to fill out and in most cases, no
preauthorization needed. Kaiser Foundation Hospitals sponsor numerous
charitable, educational, and research activities.

Permanente Medical Groups
Consisting of doctors and medical professionals who care for our
members, Permanente Medical Groups are the for-profit arm of Kaiser
Permanente. With more than 17,000 physicians practicing evidencebased care and collaborating in multispecialty group practice settings,
we’re ensuring care continuity across all specialties and life stages while
reinforcing our philosophy of treating the whole patient: mind, body,
and spirit.
Kaiser Foundation Health Plans automatically approve care authorized
by a Medical Group provider. This completes the circle of health care
delivery, with insurer, provider, and facilities working seamlessly to serve
member needs.

National Functions
Our National Functions organization
helps coordinate our efforts
across the country and provides
administrative and corporate
services within Kaiser Permanente.
National Functions encompasses two
subgroups: Corporate and Kaiser
Permanente Information Technology.
Corporate
Corporate includes the Kaiser
Permanente national leadership
team, program leads, and
staff who support our regions
in a variety of business areas
including quality, finance, brand
management, communications,
government relations, community
benefit, compliance, human
resources, health plan operations,
hospital operations, and legal.
Kaiser Permanente Information
Technology (KPIT)
At KPIT, our 12,800 information
technology experts design, build,
and strengthen the advanced
systems and innovative solutions
that shape the future of care. This
effort does not go unnoticed.
For the fourth consecutive year,
Computerworld Magazine ranked
us among the Best Places to Work
in IT, and HIMSS honored us with
their prestigious Enterprise Davis
Award recognizing excellence
in the implementation of health
information and technology.
At the forefront of our IT
capabilities is KP HealthConnect®,
one of the world’s largest
electronic medical record systems.
Through technology, our members
are connected to their health
like never before. In 2012, our
members visited kp.org 116
million times, and stopped by our
mobile-optimized site
(kp.org mobile) 19 million
times. They used our newly
minted mobile app to make
appointments, email physicians,
refill prescriptions, watch
educational videos, and more.
And they further leveraged our
technology to view 32 million
lab results, schedule 3 million
appointments, and refill nearly 12
million prescriptions.

Kaiser Permanente is consistently

independent accreditation and
quality organizations.
•	Kaiser Permanente has the third
highest ranked Medicare health
plans in the nation and three of
the top 10 Private (Commercial)
health plans for 2011–12 according
to the National Committee for
Quality Assurance.

Innovation & Research
From green design and materials to
groundbreaking technologies and
expansive research projects, Kaiser
Permanente is on the leading edge
of innovation—and not just in the
health care industry. Our resources,
scope, and reputation allow us to
partner with experts around the
world to share information and
inspire new practices. For example,
one of our biggest research
programs to date—a long-term
study aimed at determining which
genes and environmental factors
are linked to specific diseases—
is currently underway. We also
operate the Garfield Center in San
Leandro, California—a one-of-akind living laboratory that allows
us to test designs, procedures, and
technologies in a safe, mockedup clinical environment—as well
as the Kaiser Permanente Center
for Total Health in Washington,
DC, a unique educational venue in
which to explore solutions aimed
at improving health. And in 2012
alone, we invested more than $170
million in research, conducted 3,800
research and evaluation studies, and
published 1,070 articles in peerreviewed journals about
study findings.

At Kaiser Permanente, we make it
our mission to champion the health
of our members, communities, and
employees. It’s a talk we walk (and
run, and jump) every day. In June
2012, Kaiser Permanente was named

Community Benefit
As a not-for-profit organization,
we believe in reinvesting our
revenues to improve care. Through
our community benefit programs,
we support area health centers,
local health departments, and
county hospitals that care for those
with no insurance. We partner
with community and safety-net
organizations and provide direct
coverage to low-income families.
We encourage young people to eat
healthy and stay active with programs
offered through neighborhoods
and schools. In 2012, we invested
approximately $2 billion dollars
to improve the health of our
communities.
Labor Management Partnership
One reason for Kaiser Permanente’s
success is our strong relationship
with labor unions. Forged in 1997,
our Labor Management Partnership
is the largest and most complex
health care partnership in the
United States, boasting the largest
number of unions, operating units,
and employees, and covering
the greatest diversity of job
classifications and skills. It engages
frontline workers and supervisors
in a wide range of issues, including
quality of care, strategic initiatives,
business planning, and member and
employee satisfaction.

National Functions encompasses two subgroups: Corporate and Kaiser Permanente Information Technology.
