The park was initially opened in 1857 but later expanded, with construction completing in 1873. It features two ice skating rinks in the winter that become a swimming pool in the summer. Other attractions include the Ramble area popular with birders, boating and kayaking on The Lake, horse rides, playgrounds, rock climbing, and a small zoo that has been featured in movies.
