2. What is censorship?
- It’s the review of something and the election to either alter, destroy, withhold
or simply refrain from publishing the news, or some other kind of information.
- It’s purpose is to keep a certain public from knowing something.
- The media is controllable by the government, other administrative institutions
and private parties.
- Powerful people can afford to controll the news to guard their interests.
3. Withholding Information
Withholding Information happens when a report or newspaper does not give the
whole news or hides one part of the event to control the information given to the
readers by using censorship and hide the whole truth.
This example is the UN’s resolution for the rwandan genocide in which they
pretended to be helpful and assertive as an peacekeeping organization and they
reported to be helpful and active in the conflict but the truth is they weren’t and
they withheld the real information in which they abandoned Rwanda in their most
needed time.

4. Destroying Information
Deleting information or destroying information is another way of censorship, in
which you deny the public the whole truth or a sensitive case.
Protecting sensitive information from public from the US Department of
Transportation example: After the attack of 9/11, United States government and U.S.
Department of Transportation decided to destroy sensitive information given to the
public that could affect their homeland security. This decision was obviously made
or influenced by the terrorist attack in NY.

5. Altering Information
Altering information is the process in which
information or in this case a picture is edited
to make people believe something that
didn’t happen or something that is not real.
The same picture was used for two different
purpose and also the face of the person
was edited to make people believe he was
darker and unshaved and maybe “bad”.

6. Self-Censorship
In 2007, a spanish magazine called “El Jueves”, published a magazine with the prince and princess of
Asturias in its cover. They appear to be having sex, but the message they put out is kind of offensive
for the royals. It was taken down by the magazine directors almost instantly.

7. Conclusion
The Control of Information is a devastating reality that we deal with nowadays. It’s a
situation that’s caused by the influence of powerful people in the control of media.
This couple of activities are very important for us because they make us realize and
open our eyes to the control powerful entreprises have over us and the information
we get and believe. It’s very important to understand the different types of
censorship so we can spot them and to maintain control on our opinions and voices
understanding the type of information we are receiving mostly because society is
influenced and controlled almost completely by few companies that we don’t
personally know or know they interests.
