• Mitosis is the process by which
a single cell divides into
typically two identical cells,
each of which has the same
number of chromosomes and
genetic material as the original
cell
• .In eukaryotic cells, mitosis is a
nuclear division process that is
often broken down into five
steps.

Mitosis
It replaces damaged or dead cells,
aiding in tissue repair and
maintenance.
It's essential for growth and
development of multicellular
organisms.
Mitosis allows cells to divide and
produce new, genetically identical
cells.
Mitosis ensures that daughter cells
receive the same number of
chromosomes as the parent cell,
maintaining the genetic stability of an
organism.

• Interphase
• Prophase
• Metaphase
• Anaphase
• Telophase

7. Interphase
• The cell spends most of its time
and accomplishes most of its
tasks, including getting ready to
divide, during the interphase
phase of the cell cycle.
• The nucleus of the cell contains
chromatin, material from which
chromosomes are formed,
during the cell division.
Centrosomes are observed in
the cytoplasm.

8. Prophase
• Chromosomes are created in
the nucleus from the chromatin
material and emerge as visible
structures.
• There is no longer a nuclear
membrane.
• Each chromosome is made of
two chromatids joined by a
centromere
• Centrioles move to opposite
poles

9. Metaphase
• Duplicated Chromosomes
align at the equator of the
cell.
• Spindle fibers are also
formed.
• Each fiber binds to a
protein called the
kinetochore at the
centromere of each sister
chromatid of the
chromosome.

10. Anaphase
• Chromosomes split
Simultaneously at the
centromeres so that the sister
chromatids separate and
move to opposite poles.
• Spindle fibers not connected
to chromatids lengthen and
elongate the cell.

11. Telophase
• Daughter chromosomes arrive
at the poles.
• The fibers (spindles) disappear.
• The nuclear membrane forms
again.- The two daughter cells
have the same number of
chromosomes as the mother
cell.
• Telophase is followed by
cytokinesis, which denotes the
division of the cytoplasm to form
two daughter cells. Thus, it
marks the completion of cell
division
