The cell cycle consists of interphase where the cell grows and DNA replicates, followed by mitosis where the cell divides into two daughter cells. During interphase the cell performs its normal functions and DNA replication occurs preparing the cell for division. Mitosis then begins with prophase where the cell prepares its nucleus to divide, followed by metaphase where chromosomes line up in the center, anaphase where chromosomes split and move apart, and telophase where the cell forms two new nuclei. Cytokinesis then divides the cytoplasm creating two new daughter cells that enter back into interphase to repeat the cell cycle.
