Prominent Painters and Painting from Song to Qing Dynasty Hee Dam Yoon (52775031)
Song Dynasty
The Song Dynasty was the golden age of landscape painting in Chinese history. Many artists
developed landscape painting during Five Dynasties so, the development in the Song period was
smoothly started. Especially emperor Song Huizong enjoyed contribution on art cultivation during
the Song Dynasty, so, the soaring of Chinese landscape painting was possible (Hough, "Sung
Dynasty (1960–1179)"). Features of this period are vision of nature and scholarly officials'
participation in the art field. These officials expressed their political view and cultivated themselves
through natural images (Department of Asian Art). Guo–Xi was one of the ... Show more content on

Also, he used Blue and Green coloring style from the Tang Dynasty. As a traditionalist, Zhao used
Tang's feature in a revival meaning. Besides the simplified style, he successfully described beauty of
this region by giving a sense of classical elegance and calmness (Autumn Colors on the Que and
Hua Mountains). The impression that I got from this painting is beauty of the simplicity. Compare to
previous and later Chinese landscape painting, Zhao's simple brushwork makes me to approach
easily and appreciate the overall painting. Also, not just drawing the overall mountain included by
numerous trees, I like how Zhao described each tree's feature like its leaves, brunches or color. Zhao
painted the mountain with color blue instead of green and I think this is creative and beautiful at the
same time. He had an innovative choice which makes him more special. The reason why this
painting is so popular and unique is because of Zhao's innovation using calligraphy in landscape
painting. The use of calligraphy is also shown well in other paintings by Zhao. We can see several
written calligraphy around mountains and trees. For example, Four Anecdotes from the Life of
Wang Xizhi is a great example of Zhao's devotion on Calligraphy in Chinese art History.

The Impact Of Ansel Adams On The Conservation Movement
Assess the impact of Ansel Adams as an influential figure in the conservation movement Intro
America's National Parks are deeply indebted to the American photographer Ansel Adams. Through
his masterful photography, he turned Yosemite National Park into an American icon. Ansel spent the
majority of his life fighting for the National Parks through intense political activism. He was a key
figure in conservation in the United States, beginning in a time when environmental conservation
was a rare concept.
From a young age he showed uncommon interest in wilderness and the outdoors and grew into one
of the personalities most responsible for defining what American wilderness means. In his twenties,
Ansel demonstrated incredible mastery of the young art form of photography. Through his
friendships and collaboration with other artists and environmentalists and through his many
prestigious art shows and published collections he gained fame. He used his fame, strong personal
voice and persuasive activism for environmental conservation causes such as ... and for
environmental organizations such as the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society. In particular, Ansel
Adams was inspired and captivated by Yosemite at a young age and found the mountains to be his
calling. His passion to preserve the park he experienced as a young boy fueled his efforts.

What Is The Impact Of Shinto On Traditional And Modern Japan?
The Impact of Shinto on Traditional and Modern Japan
What is Shintoism?
Shinto is the religion of Japan. Historically, it was first used in the 6th century C.E., although the
roots of the religion go back to the 6th century B.C.E. It is incredibly difficult to trace back
Shintoism because most of the beliefs were passed down orally. Shinto has no founder, no official
sacred texts, and no formalized system of doctrine. Shinto is seldom practiced outside of its origin
country, Japan. Because of this, followers have no need for mission work. In Japan, 83.9% of the
population practices Shintoism. There are over 110,000 Shinto shrines and temples in Japan. The
name Shinto comes from the Chinese characters introduced in Japan that translate to Shen meaning
"divine being", and Tao meaning "way", together meaning "Way of the Spirits". The main belief of
Shinto is in the "kami" or spirits who preside in nature. The kami are not gods, they are simply
concerned with humans, resulting in a symbiotic relationship between humans and kami. If you treat
the spirits well, they will treat you well in return.
Shinto is not a way to explain the workings of the world either, it is simply the appreciation of the
spirits. In Shinto humans are considered as good and has no concept of original sin or that humans
have fallen from grace. There is no leader or founder, and no official scripture. Instead of teaching
commandments, Shinto teaches ethical principles. The ritual of visiting shrines is

The Pros And Cons Of Social Penetration
Introduction
This community is sick of the government, how it governs the country, how it takes the issues and
problems for granted, how the opportunist politicians take away people's penny, and there's a lot
more. Some express their dismay, disgust, and supplications through huge signs and shouts in front
of government offices, some through articles and blogs, and some are through songs. "Upuan " sang
by Aristotle Pollisco also known as Gloc 9 , one of the most successful hip–hop artists in the
Philippines, featuring Jeazell Grutas, female vocalist of the rock band Zelle , shows the true status of
the society.
The lyrics on the first part are describing the deaf and blind politicians to pay attention, to see and
hear the people's plea.
The rap part of the song tells about how comfortable and envying lives of the politicians are

Social Penetration according to the book of Em Griffin is the process of developing deeper intimacy
with another person through mutual self–disclosure and other forms of vulnerability. Moreover,
self–disclosure is the voluntary sharing of personal history, preference, attitudes, feelings, values,
secrets with another person. It can also be defined as transparency.Social Psychologists Irwin
Altman and Dalmas Taylor propounded the Social Penetration Theory that explains how to develop
a relational closeness to another person.
Using this theory to critique the music video of our group using the song upuan, in order for those

Art And Visual Culture : The Joseon Dynasty
The Joseon Dynasty was declared by Yi Seonggye, best known as King Taejo, in the late fourteenth
century. King Taejo 's foundation for the new empire was based on the rejection of the Goryeo
Dynasty, the state religion of Buddhism, and his desire for a Neo–Confucianist society. The new
standards of Neo–Confucianism significantly affected the art and visual culture produced during this
period of Korean history. During the Joseon period, paintings were considered a form of visual
enlightenment for the Korean people. Painting, calligraphy, playing music, and playing the game
paduk were regarded as the "Four Accomplishments that were expected of a learned man." The
understanding and skill of painting is also said "to be necessary for cultural and intellectual
refinement." As a result, the Korean government created academies for men of jungin status to
become poets and painters. Many Korean artists were greatly inspired by the ink paintings of
Chinese literati artists and masters. The three most interesting topics in Korean painting are
landscape, genre, and portraiture due to their progressions in style over time, as well as the variation
in techniques that artists used. Significant examples of Korean landscape painting include An Gyeon
's Dream Journey to Peach Blossom Land and Jeong Seon 's The Diamond Mountains. Genre
painting as seen in Kim Hongdo 's Carpenters (from the album Genre Paintings by Danwon) and

Ansel Adams Influence On Environmental Photographer
There are two phenomenal photographers that have inspired me and my desire to learn more about
photography and to become an environmental photographer. The two professional photographer are
Ansel Easton Adams and Mary Ellen Mark. One photographer who inspires me is Ansel Adams.
Ansel Adams was considered to be an environmental photographer. Adams was born in San
Francisco, California. His family migrated to California from England. His grandfather started a
lumber business to help make ends meet. Ironically later in his life Adams would condemn the
lumber industry for depleting the red wood forest in California. He was an only child and spent
countless hours leaning astronomy from his father. His father bought him a three inch telescope ...

subject or several of his more well know pieces of work. His first photos were published in 1921.
This was Adams big break with publication of his portfolio entitled Parmelian Prints of the High

Kearsarge Pinnacles to name a few. At the age of seventeen Ansel joined the Sierra Club who
dedicated themselves to the protection of wild places all over the country. He worked that summer
as a caretaker of the Sierra Club's visitor center, Leconte memorial Lodge for the next four years. He
later served as the club's director and in 1934 was elected to the clubs board. Adams often
participated in the club's annual High Trips and was one of the person to ascent the Sierra Nevada.

The Aesthetic Of Ruins On The Beauty Of Abandoned...
The aesthetic of ruins can help us understand aspects of interior design in terms of the lack of human
presence indicating elements we might otherwise ignore. To explore this theme, I will examine how
theorists have thought about the aesthetic of abandonment in relation to the beauty of abandoned
structures, beginning with the work of Gordon Matta–Clark, in leading us to rethink our lived in
environment apart from just its visual aspect. Gay Watson introduces the idea of emptiness as a
therapeutic perspective and following this I discuss the origins of beauty in impermanence, non–
selfhood and emptiness. I also analysis beauty existing in ruined buildings that reveals the
relationship between space and human beings, supported by the work of Henri Lefebvre. In order to
link the use of abandonment and aesthetic beauty, the background to Gordon Matta–Clark will be
briefly outlined. Known for his site–specific 'building cuts' made in the 1970s, Matta–Clark draws
our attention to the fact that we are usually too busy to notice the other significances of our living
space besides its domestic function. Apart from its interior equipment, we care little about a
building's character, which may lack functionality or an attractive aesthetic. Matta–Clark's works
usually focus on the abandoned building from which he removes sections of ceilings, floors, and
walls, as a part of so–called "Anarchitecture". He spent several years studying French literature in
Paris in 1968, the source of his

Mabel Dodge Luhan, An American Artist, Writer, And Social...
Mabel Dodge Luhan was an American artist, writer, and social activist, who helped make New
Mexico the center of arts and culture that it is today, as well as help inspire the modern art
movement, and spread the progressive/free–thought movement. In the enormous collection of
literature attributed to her, Mabel admitted to having neurotic and sociopathic tendencies; she was a
hypocrite, believed power and authority gave her life meaning, and acted out of emotion in most life
situations. Although she admitted to being a person of questionable character, she was seen as a
kind, compassionate, honorable, and intelligent woman, by her friends, colleagues, and lovers:
Mabel was indeed a revolutionary. Born in Buffalo, New York, on February 26, 1879 to Sarah Cook
and Charles Ganson, two members of America's wealthy upper–class, Mabel had a privileged life.
At this time, the United States was a growing world power, and its rate of industrialization
persuaded many American's that their Western, Anglo morals were superior to that of other cultures.
Her parents were like those Americans who focused on the growing industrialization of America and
upkeep of American ideals. Mabel was raised to be a "proper" lady, to wed, and be a good wife and
mother, she received little attention from her parents, who substituted love for power, and she was
raised primarily by their servants. Mabel grew rebellious of her parents and the ideology of the
growing industrialized America, her rebellious

The Diversity Myth Essay
The Diversity Myth
The idea that "diversity" is one of the country's great strengths is now so firmly rooted that virtually
anyone can evoke it, praise it, and wallow in it without fear of contradiction. It has become one of
the great unassailably American ideas, like democracy, patriotism, the family, or Martin Luther
King.
The President of the United States glories in diversity. In May, 1995, in a message recognizing the
Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, William Clinton said, "The Fifth of May offers all of us a chance
to celebrate the cultural diversity that helps to make our nation great." A few days later, when he
designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, he said, "With the strength of our

and Mrs. Clinton are promoting––is a great advantage for America is one of the most obviously
stupid propositions ever to see the light of day.
Nevertheless there is one kind of diversity that is an advantage. A contractor, for example, cannot
build houses if he hires only electricians. He needs carpenters, plumbers, etc.––a diverse work force.
However, functional diversity of this kind is not what the Chief Executive is on about. He is talking
about largely non–functional differences like race, language, age, sex, culture and even whether
someone is homosexual. One might call this status diversity.
What advantages would a contractor get from a mixed work force of that kind? None. What are the
advantages the United States gets from a racially mixed population? None.
The idea that status diversity is a strength is not merely a myth, but a particularly transparent one.
Explaining why diversity is bad for a country is a little like explaining why cholera is bad for it; the
trick is to understand how anyone could possibly think it was good.
In fact, diversity became a strength after the fact. It became necessary to believe in it because
skepticism would be "racist." Otherwise intelligent people began to mouth nonsense about diversity
only because of the blinding power of the race taboo. After diversity began to include sex, mental
disabilities, perversions, and everything else that was alien or outlandish, to disbelieve in the power

Essay on What is Art?
Intro In late Antiquity the arts consisted of the seven artes liberales, the liberal arts: Grammar,
Logic, Rhetoric, Geometry, Arithmetic, Astronomy, and Music. Philosophy was the mother of them
all. On a lower level stood the technical arts like architecture, agriculture, painting, sculpture and
other crafts. "Art" as we concieve of it today was a mere craft. Art in the Middle Ages
was "the ape of nature". And what is art today? Can we give a definition? Sir Roger
Penrose, one of the foremost scientists of our time, when faced with a similar problem with regard
to the definition of quite something else, viz., consciousness, states in his The Emperor's New Mind:
"I do not think that it is wise, at this stage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
None of them are artists, though they all fall short of being so to varying degrees, but they are all
painters. And then there are painters who are artists. Where does the difference lie, and why? What
does the one lot do which the other lot doesn't? When is painting an art, and why?"[3] The
criterion of art What makes a painting a work of art? According to the Institutional Theory of Art,
"Painters make paintings, but it takes a representative of the art–world to make a work of
art."[4] So, What is art? is not a question to be answered by the lay–man. We need Priests to
tell us what the Truth is, i.e., to decide wether a painting is a work of art or not. Besides the
"externalist" Institutional Theory of Art answer Wollheim gives two internalist answers:
"The criterion of art lies in some directly perceptible property that the painting has." and
The act of painting has to be an intentional one, i.e., the painter has to have the intention of making
art. The act of painting has to be undertaken in a special way in order to be art.[5] The origins of art
In a book with a totally different subject, The Prehistory of the Mind, Steve Mithen defines art as
artefacts or images with symbolic meanings as a means of communication. Art, in Mithen's theory,
is a product of the cognitive fluidity in the "Modern" (i.e., Homo sapiens sapiens)

I chose to focus on Wang Xi Meng's Chinese landscape painting, A Thousand Li of Rivers and

eminent thirty–nine foot long scroll was one of the most inimitable of its time, displayed to this day
in the Palace Museum, located in China's capital, Beijing. Later being nicknamed the "Great age of

Composed in 1859, this English landscape painting was didactic to Church himself. During that time
period, the fidelity of art was essential. Landscape paintings were scientist only copy they could use
to study nature. Therefore, intricate detail was vital due to being tasked with representing nature.
The challenge of including every minute detail was enlightening to the artist on the perfection and
complexity of nature. I also found the inclusion of the cross very interesting. This was painted
during the era of colonialism when America was becoming powerful. America also began attaching
itself to have a distinct Christian identity with the sense of the religious garden of eden and paradise.
Adding this religious symbol was key to spreading this affiliation, intending to draw more people to
America. Accordingly, landscape paintings during this time period was also used for advertising,
unlike Chinese landscape paintings similar to Wang's. I would assume this was effective due to this
being one of the only human affiliation in the painting. I was able to relate more with this landscape

China started having a government in the Shang dynasty. They ruled what would now be Henan,
Hubei, Shandong and part of Anhui. The Shang were an aristocratic society, or a heredity ruling
class. This dynasty was also the first to leave written records. The principal Shang city was Anyang,
it was in a clearance deep inside the forest. In 1027 BC, the Zhou overthrew the Shang and made
their own dynasty. They were both very alike, and there was not much change in culture. But the
Zhou brought up many fresh ideas, which would seem obvious because all people think in different
ways, and have different solutions to their problems. As an excuse of overthrowing the Shang, they
said that the last Shang king had done so badly, that the gods weren't satisfied, so they decided to let
the Zhou rule. This is a part of the mandate of heaven, which meant that the ruler had approval from
the gods. The Zhou dynasty also appointed lands to nobles and members of the king's family, these
nobles were granted land, but the land wasn't theirs, because it all belonged to the king, this was
called feudalism. These nobles had to provide protection to the people that lived there. The social
pyramid in this government are the following. At the top was the king, ruler of all. He appointed

Homophobia
Homophobia refers to fear of or prejudice and discrimination against lesbian, gay and bisexual
people. It is also the dislike of same–sex attraction and love or the hatred of people who have those

homophobic comments or attitudes are often unintentional, they can cause hurt and offence to
lesbian, gay and bisexual people.
Transphobia
Transphobia refers to fear of or prejudice and discrimination against people who are transgender or

Scientists now say global climate change is occurring much more rapidly than originally predicted,
because of feedback loops, and that the polar ice caps may be entirely gone by 2020, not by 2050 as
was earlier predicted. The world's leading scientists also say that delayed action will increase the
risk of adverse environmental effects and will likely increase the cost.
The melting glaciers and ice caps will have, and in places are already having, major impacts on

RELIGION
The three most important religious beliefs in China were Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.
These people believed in many gods, making them polytheistic. Their gods were natural gods, river

Confucianism isn't really a religion; it is just the thoughts of this man and his disciples, concerned
with the principles of good conduct, practical knowledge, and proper social relationships.
Confucianism is a philosophy. Although he is a very important person in Chinese history, it still
doesn't make it a religion, because he was never a god. Confucius was born in 551BC, and died in

Along The River During The Qingming Festival Essay
As the eighth and most famous emperor of the Song Dynasty of China, Emperor Huizong ruled the
capital from the years 1100 to 1125 where his love of peace of Taoism was brought to life through
his teachings and later in scripted into a painting, now known as one of the most famous paintings in
Chinese History. The 'Along The River During The Qingming Festival' was painted by Chinese
artist Zhang Zeduan in the year 1100 – 1120. With its indication of Emperor Huizong's love, peace,
and prosperity, this painting has indicated the way in which Chinese people find peace throughout
the triumphs and trials of love. Though this painting is considered to have been created during a
time of economic crisis and civil rebellions at the end of the dynasty, the scroll is only looked upon
as containing prosperity and peace, even in today's modern Chinese society. The shops in the street
are said to have reflected the emperor's interest in commerce due to his way of entertainment and
love for all creations being known and heard. As Emperor Huizong became historically known for
his worshipping of Taoism, it is clear in this painting that the elements are within the characteristics.

Chinese Folk Songs : The Chinese Story And The Human Story...
Chinese folk songs are again utilized in the Chinese story of Yellow Earth. Like in Street Angel,
music is tied not only to the Chinese story of the human experience, but the human as well,
specifically of women. Folk music in this film is dually important to the Chinese story and the
human story of women's oppression. Like in Street Angel, Chinese folk music is Chinese due to the
historical context of traditional folk music. But unlike in Street Angel, the songs in Yellow Earth are
specific to the immediate surroundings of the singer. Therefore, the songs are sung in response to the
problems the singer faces in the remote region of China, in which this story takes place, and in their
human lives. Cuiqiao's father recognizes Chinese folk music as "just bitter songs." In response to a
query about singing, he says "I'm not happy and not sad. Why should I sing now?" and states that
"when life becomes hard, you remember [the songs]." This proves that the content of the songs is
dependent not only on the Chinese story, but the human story. Art has been used by humanity for
thousands of years to express the contextual emotion of the artist. The use of Chinese folk songs in
Yellow Earth as a reflection of human emotion is part of the human story of this film and makes the
characters' suffering tangible to the audience. Relaying the struggles of the time period through the
art of Chinese folk music helps the audience identify the issues the characters face in rural China

Technology: Nature And Technology
Nature and technology are sometimes classified as binary opposites, they are different yet they both
play a huge part in our lives. These being binary opposites can be argued because they work hand in
hand daily for humans to live. Without technology there is no life, and without nature there is no
technology and no life. We trust nature and hope in technology, this is a theory that keeps us going.
This essay will debate this assumption of technology and nature viewed as binary opposites. It will
be supported by a Samsung Galaxy gear gadget which will demonstrate how technology may
operate as an extension to the human body and mind. It will further debate whether humans are seen
as natural or technological beings.
The word technology does not simply mean tools, hardware and software's, but instead it also
signifies art, craft and skills which has been around for decades. We often associate technology with
brand new gadgets but it can be argued that technology is as old as humanity because it is a part of
what defines us humans. According to Arthur (2009: 215) we fear that technology ... Show more

The Influence of Music on Self and Society
Throughout history the unspoken but highly evocative language of music has exerted powerful
influences on individuals and societies alike. Felix Mendelssohn once remarked that music is more
specific about what it expresses than words written about those expressions could ever be. That
music has the power to express, convey and illicit powerful emotions is without question, however
the issue of music's moral and ethical power, and how that power affects individuals and societies, is
one that receives too little attention in our post–modern world. Ancient cultures held strong beliefs
in the moral and ethical power of music and as such it was imperative for artists within those

the moral and possibly corrupting aspects of the music of his countrymen. He was equally
concerned with the effects of good (moral) music on a person's character: "The noble–minded man's
music is mild and delicate, keeps a uniform mood, enlivens and moves. Such a man does not harbor
pain or mourn in his heart; violent and daring movements are foreign to him."
As mentioned earlier, a significant aspect of the ancient Chinese' concept of music was the effect of
music on one's psyche and the issue of freedom and responsibility in all musical pursuits. When
compared to the rationales and motivation of artists of our modern age the Chinese ideal of music–
making seems highly enlightened as evident in the consideration given to the effect of music upon
the character of the listener. If individuals were affected by music it stood to reason that the larger
society could be influenced positively or negatively as well.
The ancient Chinese book "The Memorial of Music" states: "Under the effect of music, the five
social duties are without admixture, the eyes and the ears are clear, the blood and the vital energies
are balanced, habits are reformed, customs are improved, the empire is at complete peace." As we
can see, the Chinese view that social order was juxtaposed to music plays heavily into its
philosophical system and ideals. The connection of the tonal arts to the ordering principles of
physical laws and metaphysical

I Am Surrounded By Knowledge
I live in a society where I am surrounded by knowledge. More specifically, the culture I am a part of
is one that values collaboration and the sharing of knowledge. This culture is that of students who
are in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP). While it is true that I am
surrounded by knowledge, it is useless to me if I don't use it in a successful way. When knowing
how to use knowledge successfully, it is important to realize the difference between personal and
shared knowledge and also how they can be used together. Fortunately, by being in the IB program I
have been able to study this topic and form an opinion on it. Shared knowledge helps my personal
knowledge develop. Shared knowledge shapes me as an artist. When looking at the AOK of the Arts,
the connection between shared and personal knowledge is highly evident. For example, in my DP art
class last year, I decided to create a project using the Adobe Photoshop application. Considering that
I had no prior knowledge of the application or how to go about using it, I realized that a tutorial
would be needed in order to successfully create my piece. The tutorial was a form of shared
knowledge that I was able to use as a basis for the technique I approached my project with. This
particular example is showing how imagination can be used as a WOK in the Arts. Both Art and
Imagination involve the use of creativity and taking risks. In my example, I was taking a risk in

All waste that Brazilians throw out is sorted and categorised by the hardworking Catadores, as Tiào
a character in the film says "we are not pickers, of garbage we are pickers of recyclable materials.
Garbage can't be reused, whereas recycle material can.". The Catadores wear uniforms that
symbolise an organised group, which prevent recyclable materials from ending up in the landfill so
they can protect the wasted resources that have good use from the rich and middle–class people in
Brazil. Materials collected by the pickers are then used to recreate useful objects such as furniture
and as seen in the film the materials can be used through Art. Another example from the
documentary that conveys the idea of sustainability is through the character named Irma. Irma is an
elderly lady who makes use of all food that is found in the landfill. She provides the Catadors with
Juice, Coffee and provides food for everyone. In the film, Irma quotes "I never let anyone go
hungry". She makes use of everything even the expired food that is found in the wasteland which is
still cooked and eaten ensuring that all waste and resources are used. Comparing these values to
Australians, Australians value the resources we also have such as food, water, shelter, clothing and
our wide useful range of available materials. The Australian population has different ideas about

The Chicano Movement By Frank Romero
Throughout history, art has helped in different mediums to bring awareness to different issues and
constructive messages to society. The Chicano movement started in the 1960s; the public wanted to
repair social injustice. The Chicano movement encompassed a broad section of issues; from
restoration of lands, to farm workers' rights, to enhance education, to voting and political rights. At
this moment many individuals were trying different ways to express their views and one of those
ways was art. In the early years of the Chicano movement, Frank Romero established a reputation as
one of the Chicano art heroes. Through murals Frank Romero expressed his thoughts and embodied
a Chicano identity. His murals would not only connect with Mexicans, but with everyone. In his
painting or art Romero would usually show everyday events in different views, opening the eyes of
the viewer. Romero 's art would come out strong. Although Romero gained his fame with his
murals, he is amazing in drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculptures. He is not just a remarkable
Chicano artist, but an astonishing artist around the world.
Frank Romero was born in 1941 in Los Angeles, California. He was raised in a culturally mixed,
middle class community and was well into his career when he identified himself as a Latino artist.

Religion And Its Role Within Societies 600 B.c
Religion and its role in societies 600 B.C.E. – 600 C.E.
Codifications and further developments of existing religious traditions provided a bond among the
people and an ethical code to live by.
Religion has been a dominant cultural, ethical, and political force throughout human history, both
recent and ancient. Religion has been science and asylum for many generations of very many
people, uniting them in their common faith. Temples were built for people to pray and perform
sacrifice in, giving the people a common cause to live for and thereby creating personal relations
between people even before you got to know them. The unique features of ancient religions were
that they were all polytheistic, meaning that they recognized many gods, instead of one main one.
And the problem with this was that in the ancient history, before the invention of writing, nothing
was written down: stories were told verbally, laws were passed on verbally, and writing things down
was an incredible task for the ancient people, and gave incredible glory to the people that did it,
because if it's written down, it's much easier to spread your beliefs and it's harder to forget specifics
of your religion or law. Writing down religious and political texts has greatly facilitated the
religions' diffusion and spread throughout the globe, and consequently, brought together and apart
many more religious people and governments.
What also helped currently popular and dominant religions spread was that most

Confucianism In Chinese Art
Chinese art is one of the oldest continuous traditions in the world. China has a reoccurring theme of
different art forms which includes pottery, jade, and bronze castings. Along with that is also
painting, calligraphy, poetry, architecture and sculpture. Taoism also called (Daoism) and
Confucianism philosophies are indigenous to China's history and have been influenced deeply on
Chinese art.
I will begin with Taoism (Daoism) is a philosophical tradition of Chinese culture. It is based on the
writings of Lao Zi in which it emphasizes living in harmony of Tao. Tao means way; as in a path
and also a means of doing: the way of nature. Taoism promotes things like simplicity, spontaneity,
tranquility, nonconformity. Yin and yang are the most known concepts used in Taoism. Yin and yang
are two halves that creates a duality forming a whole. They are complete when together due to the
interconnection and interdependence of two opposite forces. If they split it messes up the balance
and equilibrium of their wholeness. Yin and yang are encountered in our everyday lives like for an
example night and day. Night would be yin and day would yang, another is female and male, yin is
female and yang is male. A final one would be negative and positive, yin would be positive and
negative would be yang. The symbol for yin and yang is called the Taiji.

The Discipline of Chinese Painting: An Internal Reflection...
When one comes into contact with a Chinese painting, the style is almost instantly recognizable. The
attention to detail, craftsmanship, and vast depictions of elaborate landscapes appear to pay homage
to mother earth in an attempt to reach a state of eternal balance with nature and life. Before this
equilibrium could be achieved, one must attain internal discipline. This was required before one
began mastering their brushwork in Chinese culture. In Mai Mai Sze's "The Way of Chinese
Painting," 1959, New York: Vintage Books, Random House, Sze discusses the philosophy known as
Daoism/Tao, or "the way." Before one became a skilled painter, one trained in the personal

Mai Mai Sze presents a logical methodology breaking down the often–misunderstood complexity of
Daoism. Sze describes tao "in the simplest sense...path" (The Way of Chinese Painting, 17).
Continued, "Step–by–step progress requires care and deliberation and, by extension, careful and
deliberate conduct or behavior from an inner motivation." This journey was not something one
could accomplish overnight; instead it is understood as a way of living out ones life to the fullest.
This journey was not only into one's own mind, but also into what surrounds them. Including tools,
control of the medium was a necessity, just as restrain over the sensitivity of the brush was needed
when writing Chinese characters. A minor error in a character could change the entire meaning of
the symbol. Symbols are often associated with Chinese culture. From the calendar year to writing,
Chinese symbolism is utilized significantly. One symbol often recognized by the Western world is
the Yin Yang; however the meaning is often misunderstood. The theory of the Yin Yang is presented
as a balance between Male Principle (sun, right) and Female Principle (moon, left). As the two
converge inward, they also radiate outward reflecting the ideology of Tao itself. This development

the Tang Dynasty was by means of a legendary monk: Xuanzang. He traveled to India, while the
city of Chang'an suffered from chaos, to study the original Buddhist scripts and later returned to
China to translate all of them and interpret the ideas for the people through his Weishi School (Wen,

nothingness. "Thus, being and nothingness only differ in name; the ontological statuses of both are

shirts such as the one shown in figure 1. The shirt features Frieza from Dragon Ball Z wearing a
gold chain, an accessory often associated with hip–hop, and drinking "purple drank," or "lean," a
combination of codeine and promethazine cough syrup, typically mixed with sprite and jolly
ranchers, and consumed for a high that is often associated with hip–hop culture. This combination of
hip–hop fashion and anime is a clear showing that Dragon Ball Z has had a significant influence on

"The cartoon was considered the debut of Mickey, and his girlfriend Minnie." ("Walt Disney")
Production for Steamboat Willie took place between July and September of 1928, and cost
approximately $5,000. The release of Steamboat Willie caused thousands of people to line up at the
Universal Colong Theatre in New York. The premiere date for the film was on November 18, 1928.
Disney made about $500 a week from the release. "The success of Steamboat Willie not only led to
international fame for Walt Disney but for Mickey as well." ("Walt Disney")
As a matter of fact, Walt Disney had a tremendous influence on mass media! He influenced the
media to expand their business deals and resources. The release of his very successful movie Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs led the film to become the most successful motion picture! "The film
became the most successful motion picture in 1938 and earned over $8 million on its initial release."
("Walt Disney") Likewise, the release of the film encouraged the media to use different special
effects and record better frames. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first American film to
be made in color, so it influenced the media to use the Technicolor process for their upcoming
movies. "Snow White, the first animated feature in America made in Technicolor, was released in
February 1938..." ("Walt Disney") In the movie there is also sound. The sound, yet again caused the
sensation to make a soundtrack.

Many artists developed landscape painting during Five Dynasties so, the development in the Song period was smoothly started. Especially emperor Song Huizong enjoyed contribution on art cultivation during the Song Dynasty, so, the soaring of Chinese landscape painting was possible (Hough, "Sung Dynasty (1960–1179)"). Features of this period are vision of nature and scholarly officials' participation in the art field. Also, he used Blue and Green coloring style from the Tang Dynasty. As a traditionalist, Zhao used Tang's feature in a revival meaning. Besides the simplified style, he successfully described beauty of this region by giving a sense of classical elegance and calmness (Autumn Colors on the Que and Hua Mountains). The impression that I got from this painting is beauty of the simplicity. Compare to previous and later Chinese landscape painting, Zhao's simple brushwork makes me to approach easily and appreciate the overall painting. Also, not just drawing the overall mountain included by numerous trees, I like how Zhao described each tree's feature like its leaves, brunches or color. Zhao painted the mountain with color blue instead of green and I think this is creative and beautiful at the same time. He had an innovative choice which makes him more special. The reason why this painting is so popular and unique is because of Zhao's innovation using calligraphy in landscape painting. The use of calligraphy is also shown well in other paintings by Zhao. We can see several written calligraphy around mountains and trees. For example, Four Anecdotes from the Life of Wang Xizhi is a great example of Zhao's devotion on Calligraphy in Chinese art History. The Impact Of Ansel Adams On The Conservation Movement Assess the impact of Ansel Adams as an influential figure in the conservation movement Intro America's National Parks are deeply indebted to the American photographer Ansel Adams. Through his masterful photography, he turned Yosemite National Park into an American icon. Ansel spent the majority of his life fighting for the National Parks through intense political activism. He was a key figure in conservation in the United States, beginning in a time when environmental conservation was a rare concept. From a young age he showed uncommon interest in wilderness and the outdoors and grew into one of the personalities most responsible for defining what American wilderness means. In his twenties, Ansel demonstrated incredible mastery of the young art form of photography. Through his friendships and collaboration with other artists and environmentalists and through his many prestigious art shows and published collections he gained fame. He used his fame, strong personal voice and persuasive activism for environmental conservation causes such as ... and for environmental organizations such as the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society. In particular, Ansel Adams was inspired and captivated by Yosemite at a young age and found the mountains to be his calling. His passion to preserve the park he experienced as a young boy fueled his efforts. • 13. What Is The Impact Of Shinto On Traditional And Modern Japan? The Impact of Shinto on Traditional and Modern Japan What is Shintoism? Shinto is the religion of Japan. Historically, it was first used in the 6th century C.E., although the roots of the religion go back to the 6th century B.C.E. It is incredibly difficult to trace back Shintoism because most of the beliefs were passed down orally. Shinto has no founder, no official sacred texts, and no formalized system of doctrine. Shinto is seldom practiced outside of its origin country, Japan. Because of this, followers have no need for mission work. In Japan, 83.9% of the population practices Shintoism. There are over 110,000 Shinto shrines and temples in Japan. The name Shinto comes from the Chinese characters introduced in Japan that translate to Shen meaning "divine being", and Tao meaning "way", together meaning "Way of the Spirits". The main belief of Shinto is in the "kami" or spirits who preside in nature. The kami are not gods, they are simply concerned with humans, resulting in a symbiotic relationship between humans and kami. If you treat the spirits well, they will treat you well in return. Shinto is not a way to explain the workings of the world either, it is simply the appreciation of the spirits. In Shinto humans are considered as good and has no concept of original sin or that humans have fallen from grace. There is no leader or founder, and no official scripture. Instead of teaching commandments, Shinto teaches ethical principles. The ritual of visiting shrines is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Pros And Cons Of Social Penetration Introduction This community is sick of the government, how it governs the country, how it takes the issues and problems for granted, how the opportunist politicians take away people's penny, and there's a lot more. Some express their dismay, disgust, and supplications through huge signs and shouts in front of government offices, some through articles and blogs, and some are through songs. "Upuan " sang by Aristotle Pollisco also known as Gloc 9 , one of the most successful hip–hop artists in the Philippines, featuring Jeazell Grutas, female vocalist of the rock band Zelle , shows the true status of the society. The lyrics on the first part are describing the deaf and blind politicians to pay attention, to see and hear the people's plea. The rap part of the song tells about how comfortable and envying lives of the politicians are compare to the status of most of the people in the society. On the other ... Social Penetration according to the book of Em Griffin is the process of developing deeper intimacy with another person through mutual self–disclosure and other forms of vulnerability. • 21. Art And Visual Culture : The Joseon Dynasty The Joseon Dynasty was declared by Yi Seonggye, best known as King Taejo, in the late fourteenth century. King Taejo 's foundation for the new empire was based on the rejection of the Goryeo Dynasty, the state religion of Buddhism, and his desire for a Neo–Confucianist society. The new standards of Neo–Confucianism significantly affected the art and visual culture produced during this period of Korean history. During the Joseon period, paintings were considered a form of visual enlightenment for the Korean people. Painting, calligraphy, playing music, and playing the game paduk were regarded as the "Four Accomplishments that were expected of a learned man." The understanding and skill of painting is also said "to be necessary for cultural and intellectual refinement." As a result, the Korean government created academies for men of jungin status to become poets and painters. Many Korean artists were greatly inspired by the ink paintings of Chinese literati artists and masters. The three most interesting topics in Korean painting are landscape, genre, and portraiture due to their progressions in style over time, as well as the variation in techniques that artists used. Significant examples of Korean landscape painting include An Gyeon 's Dream Journey to Peach Blossom Land and Jeong Seon 's The Diamond Mountains. Ansel Adams Influence On Environmental Photographer There are two phenomenal photographers that have inspired me and my desire to learn more about photography and to become an environmental photographer. The two professional photographer are Ansel Easton Adams and Mary Ellen Mark. One photographer who inspires me is Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams was considered to be an environmental photographer. Adams was born in San Francisco, California. His family migrated to California from England. His grandfather started a lumber business to help make ends meet. Ironically later in his life Adams would condemn the lumber industry for depleting the red wood forest in California. He was an only child and spent countless hours leaning astronomy from his father. This was Adams big break with publication of his portfolio entitled Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras. Other pieces of his work include Oak Tree snowstorm Yosemite, Redwoods Founders Grove, Pool in Pleasure Park, A grove of Tamarack, Canyon de Chelly, Mountain stream, and Kearsarge Pinnacles to name a few. • 29. The Aesthetic Of Ruins On The Beauty Of Abandoned... The aesthetic of ruins can help us understand aspects of interior design in terms of the lack of human presence indicating elements we might otherwise ignore. To explore this theme, I will examine how theorists have thought about the aesthetic of abandonment in relation to the beauty of abandoned structures, beginning with the work of Gordon Matta–Clark, in leading us to rethink our lived in environment apart from just its visual aspect. Gay Watson introduces the idea of emptiness as a therapeutic perspective and following this I discuss the origins of beauty in impermanence, non– selfhood and emptiness. I also analysis beauty existing in ruined buildings that reveals the relationship between space and human beings, supported by the work of Henri Lefebvre. In order to link the use of abandonment and aesthetic beauty, the background to Gordon Matta–Clark will be briefly outlined. Known for his site–specific 'building cuts' made in the 1970s, Matta–Clark draws our attention to the fact that we are usually too busy to notice the other significances of our living space besides its domestic function. Apart from its interior equipment, we care little about a building's character, which may lack functionality or an attractive aesthetic. Matta–Clark's works usually focus on the abandoned building from which he removes sections of ceilings, floors, and walls, as a part of so–called "Anarchitecture". He spent several years studying French literature in Paris in 1968, the source of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Mabel Dodge Luhan, An American Artist, Writer, And Social... Mabel Dodge Luhan was an American artist, writer, and social activist, who helped make New Mexico the center of arts and culture that it is today, as well as help inspire the modern art movement, and spread the progressive/free–thought movement. In the enormous collection of literature attributed to her, Mabel admitted to having neurotic and sociopathic tendencies; she was a hypocrite, believed power and authority gave her life meaning, and acted out of emotion in most life situations. Although she admitted to being a person of questionable character, she was seen as a kind, compassionate, honorable, and intelligent woman, by her friends, colleagues, and lovers: Mabel was indeed a revolutionary. Born in Buffalo, New York, on February 26, 1879 to Sarah Cook and Charles Ganson, two members of America's wealthy upper–class, Mabel had a privileged life. At this time, the United States was a growing world power, and its rate of industrialization persuaded many American's that their Western, Anglo morals were superior to that of other cultures. Her parents were like those Americans who focused on the growing industrialization of America and upkeep of American ideals. Mabel was raised to be a "proper" lady, to wed, and be a good wife and mother, she received little attention from her parents, who substituted love for power, and she was raised primarily by their servants. • 37. The Diversity Myth Essay The Diversity Myth The idea that "diversity" is one of the country's great strengths is now so firmly rooted that virtually anyone can evoke it, praise it, and wallow in it without fear of contradiction. It has become one of the great unassailably American ideas, like democracy, patriotism, the family, or Martin Luther King. The President of the United States glories in diversity. In May, 1995, in a message recognizing the Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, William Clinton said, "The Fifth of May offers all of us a chance to celebrate the cultural diversity that helps to make our nation great." A few days later, when he designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, he said, "With the strength of our diversity and a ... Nevertheless there is one kind of diversity that is an advantage. A contractor, for example, cannot build houses if he hires only electricians. He needs carpenters, plumbers, etc.––a diverse work force. However, functional diversity of this kind is not what the Chief Executive is on about. He is talking about largely non–functional differences like race, language, age, sex, culture and even whether someone is homosexual. One might call this status diversity. What advantages would a contractor get from a mixed work force of that kind? None. What are the advantages the United States gets from a racially mixed population? None. The idea that status diversity is a strength is not merely a myth, but a particularly transparent one. Explaining why diversity is bad for a country is a little like explaining why cholera is bad for it; the trick is to understand how anyone could possibly think it was good. In fact, diversity became a strength after the fact. It became necessary to believe in it because skepticism would be "racist." Otherwise intelligent people began to mouth nonsense about diversity only because of the blinding power of the race taboo. After diversity began to include sex, mental disabilities, perversions, and everything else that was alien or outlandish, to disbelieve in the power ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Essay on What is Art? Intro In late Antiquity the arts consisted of the seven artes liberales, the liberal arts: Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric, Geometry, Arithmetic, Astronomy, and Music. Philosophy was the mother of them all. On a lower level stood the technical arts like architecture, agriculture, painting, sculpture and other crafts. "Art" as we concieve of it today was a mere craft. Art in the Middle Ages was "the ape of nature". And what is art today? Can we give a definition? Sir Roger Penrose, one of the foremost scientists of our time, when faced with a similar problem with regard to the definition of quite something else, viz., consciousness, states in his The Emperor's New Mind: "I do not think that it is wise, at this stage ... Where does the difference lie, and why? What does the one lot do which the other lot doesn't? When is painting an art, and why?"[3] The criterion of art What makes a painting a work of art? According to the Institutional Theory of Art, "Painters make paintings, but it takes a representative of the art–world to make a work of art."[4] So, What is art? is not a question to be answered by the lay–man. We need Priests to tell us what the Truth is, i.e., to decide wether a painting is a work of art or not. Besides the "externalist" Institutional Theory of Art answer Wollheim gives two internalist answers: "The criterion of art lies in some directly perceptible property that the painting has." and The act of painting has to be an intentional one, i.e., the painter has to have the intention of making art. The act of painting has to be undertaken in a special way in order to be art.[5] The origins of art In a book with a totally different subject, The Prehistory of the Mind, Steve Mithen defines art as artefacts or images with symbolic meanings as a means of communication. Art, in Mithen's theory, is a product of the cognitive fluidity in the "Modern" (i.e., Homo sapiens sapiens) Human Mind. The three cognitive processes critical to making art were ... Adding this religious symbol was key to spreading this affiliation, intending to draw more people to America. Accordingly, landscape paintings during this time period was also used for advertising, unlike Chinese landscape paintings similar to Wang's. I would assume this was effective due to this being one of the only human affiliation in the painting. Like in Street Angel, music is tied not only to the Chinese story of the human experience, but the human as well, specifically of women. Folk music in this film is dually important to the Chinese story and the human story of women's oppression. Like in Street Angel, Chinese folk music is Chinese due to the historical context of traditional folk music. But unlike in Street Angel, the songs in Yellow Earth are specific to the immediate surroundings of the singer. Therefore, the songs are sung in response to the problems the singer faces in the remote region of China, in which this story takes place, and in their human lives. Cuiqiao's father recognizes Chinese folk music as "just bitter songs." In response to a query about singing, he says "I'm not happy and not sad. Why should I sing now?" and states that "when life becomes hard, you remember [the songs]." This proves that the content of the songs is dependent not only on the Chinese story, but the human story. The use of Chinese folk songs in Yellow Earth as a reflection of human emotion is part of the human story of this film and makes the characters' suffering tangible to the audience. Felix Mendelssohn once remarked that music is more specific about what it expresses than words written about those expressions could ever be. As mentioned earlier, a significant aspect of the ancient Chinese' concept of music was the effect of music on one's psyche and the issue of freedom and responsibility in all musical pursuits. When compared to the rationales and motivation of artists of our modern age the Chinese ideal of music– making seems highly enlightened as evident in the consideration given to the effect of music upon the character of the listener. If individuals were affected by music it stood to reason that the larger society could be influenced positively or negatively as well. The ancient Chinese book "The Memorial of Music" states: "Under the effect of music, the five social duties are without admixture, the eyes and the ears are clear, the blood and the vital energies are balanced, habits are reformed, customs are improved, the empire is at complete peace." Around this period, subakhu, a systemized division of skills, was the basis of all martial arts for the upper class and a useful defense skill for the public. Taekkyon, a basic martial art which is depicted in old tomb murals in Manchuria, also emerged and developed. Koryo Dynasty (918 – 1392) During this period, taekkyon, which first emerged during the Koguryo and Shilla periods, evolved into a more systemized martial art. It was already divided into basic moves and hand and foot techniques, and it was so valued that it was a requisite for warriors to enter government positions. More specifically, the culture I am a part of is one that values collaboration and the sharing of knowledge. This culture is that of students who are in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP). While it is true that I am surrounded by knowledge, it is useless to me if I don't use it in a successful way. When knowing how to use knowledge successfully, it is important to realize the difference between personal and shared knowledge and also how they can be used together. Fortunately, by being in the IB program I have been able to study this topic and form an opinion on it. Shared knowledge helps my personal knowledge develop. Shared knowledge shapes me as an artist. When looking at the AOK of the Arts, the connection between shared and personal knowledge is highly evident. For example, in my DP art class last year, I decided to create a project using the Adobe Photoshop application. Considering that I had no prior knowledge of the application or how to go about using it, I realized that a tutorial would be needed in order to successfully create my piece. The tutorial was a form of shared knowledge that I was able to use as a basis for the technique I approached my project with. This particular example is showing how imagination can be used as a WOK in the Arts. Both Art and Imagination involve the use of creativity and taking risks. In my example, I was taking a risk in working with a medium ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A lot of the time you keep looking for beauty, but it is already there. And if you look with a bit more intention, you see it." Vic Muniz Different films and documentaries about other cultures help expand our knowledge by introducing values, struggles, innovations and beliefs beyond our daily experience by encouraging us to explore values that a different from our own. All waste that Brazilians throw out is sorted and categorised by the hardworking Catadores, as Tiào a character in the film says "we are not pickers, of garbage we are pickers of recyclable materials. Garbage can't be reused, whereas recycle material can.". The Catadores wear uniforms that symbolise an organised group, which prevent recyclable materials from ending up in the landfill so they can protect the wasted resources that have good use from the rich and middle–class people in Brazil. Materials collected by the pickers are then used to recreate useful objects such as furniture and as seen in the film the materials can be used through Art. Another example from the documentary that conveys the idea of sustainability is through the character named Irma. Irma is an elderly lady who makes use of all food that is found in the landfill. She provides the Catadors with Juice, Coffee and provides food for everyone. In the film, Irma quotes "I never let anyone go hungry". She makes use of everything even the expired food that is found in the wasteland which is still cooked and eaten ensuring that all waste and resources are used. Comparing these values to Australians, Australians value the resources we also have such as food, water, shelter, clothing and our wide useful range of available materials. • 114. The Chicano Movement By Frank Romero Throughout history, art has helped in different mediums to bring awareness to different issues and constructive messages to society. The Chicano movement started in the 1960s; the public wanted to repair social injustice. The Chicano movement encompassed a broad section of issues; from restoration of lands, to farm workers' rights, to enhance education, to voting and political rights. At this moment many individuals were trying different ways to express their views and one of those ways was art. In the early years of the Chicano movement, Frank Romero established a reputation as one of the Chicano art heroes. Through murals Frank Romero expressed his thoughts and embodied a Chicano identity. His murals would not only connect with Mexicans, but with everyone. In his painting or art Romero would usually show everyday events in different views, opening the eyes of the viewer. Romero 's art would come out strong. Although Romero gained his fame with his murals, he is amazing in drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculptures. He is not just a remarkable Chicano artist, but an astonishing artist around the world. Frank Romero was born in 1941 in Los Angeles, California. He was raised in a culturally mixed, middle class community and was well into his career when he identified himself as a Latino artist. Codifications and further developments of existing religious traditions provided a bond among the people and an ethical code to live by. Religion has been a dominant cultural, ethical, and political force throughout human history, both recent and ancient. Religion has been science and asylum for many generations of very many people, uniting them in their common faith. Temples were built for people to pray and perform sacrifice in, giving the people a common cause to live for and thereby creating personal relations between people even before you got to know them. The unique features of ancient religions were that they were all polytheistic, meaning that they recognized many gods, instead of one main one. And the problem with this was that in the ancient history, before the invention of writing, nothing was written down: stories were told verbally, laws were passed on verbally, and writing things down was an incredible task for the ancient people, and gave incredible glory to the people that did it, because if it's written down, it's much easier to spread your beliefs and it's harder to forget specifics of your religion or law. Writing down religious and political texts has greatly facilitated the religions' diffusion and spread throughout the globe, and consequently, brought together and apart many more religious people and governments. What also helped currently popular and dominant religions spread was that most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

China has a reoccurring theme of different art forms which includes pottery, jade, and bronze castings. Along with that is also painting, calligraphy, poetry, architecture and sculpture. Taoism also called (Daoism) and Confucianism philosophies are indigenous to China's history and have been influenced deeply on Chinese art. I will begin with Taoism (Daoism) is a philosophical tradition of Chinese culture. It is based on the writings of Lao Zi in which it emphasizes living in harmony of Tao. Tao means way; as in a path and also a means of doing: the way of nature. Taoism promotes things like simplicity, spontaneity, tranquility, nonconformity. Yin and yang are the most known concepts used in Taoism. Yin and yang are two halves that creates a duality forming a whole. They are complete when together due to the interconnection and interdependence of two opposite forces. If they split it messes up the balance and equilibrium of their wholeness. Yin and yang are encountered in our everyday lives like for an example night and day. Night would be yin and day would yang, another is female and male, yin is female and yang is male. A final one would be negative and positive, yin would be positive and negative would be yang. The symbol for yin and yang is called the Taiji. The attention to detail, craftsmanship, and vast depictions of elaborate landscapes appear to pay homage to mother earth in an attempt to reach a state of eternal balance with nature and life. Before this equilibrium could be achieved, one must attain internal discipline. This was required before one began mastering their brushwork in Chinese culture. In Mai Mai Sze's "The Way of Chinese Painting," 1959, New York: Vintage Books, Random House, Sze discusses the philosophy known as Daoism/Tao, or "the way." During the Tang Dynasty, different religions developing during the time had enormous influence on what was being produced during the era. When it comes to literature, poets like Wang Wei, Li Bai, Du Fu, and Bo Juyi expressed their religions through their poetry during the Tang era. He traveled to India, while the city of Chang'an suffered from chaos, to study the original Buddhist scripts and later returned to China to translate all of them and interpret the ideas for the people through his Weishi School (Wen, 77). The concept of emptiness is very prominent in Buddhism – emptiness is neither reality nor total nothingness. "Thus, being and nothingness only differ in name; the ontological statuses of both are emptiness (76)." In Wei's poem, Hermitage at Chung–nan Mountain he writes: "...and go there on a whim to wander alone. But even in all this splendor, things remain empty. I climb to the headwaters where clouds rise up from emptiness (Davis et al. 1170)." The emptiness to which he is referring is not literal emptiness, but to the underlying unity of all things. Also, the Chung–nan Mountain that he refers to was a part of the well known mountains that draw many followers of Taoism and Buddhism because of their solitude. When he says "Growing older, I grow into the Tao..." he is referring to the way of life that can be achieved by following Buddhist traditions. The poet Li Bai (701–762CE) was ...
