What Do They Do?
• The BBFC work out what the age rating
of a programme or a film should
depending on what type of movie and
what type of scenes in it and what
occurs in the film; such as age
appropriate language, violence, sex etc.
How do they rate films?

Step one: Once the film has been finished and finally been edited the
directors send the film off for it to be rated by the CBBFC.
Step two: Once the film has been seen by the CBBFC the company
must pay to rate the film.
Step three: Once the film has been rated the film is then checked again
t see if It is good enough quality for a team examiner to watch it.
Step four: Hundreds of films are sent to the BBFC for a rating each
year.
Step five: Two examiners watch the film. They must carefully write the
title down. ( as the title will be shown on the black card certificate you
see in cinemas).
Different age rating
• The U rating in the filming industry means
that ages four and above are suitable to
watch this film.
• A U film may include some brief fight scenes
but nothing to violent, as it only shows the
places where the characters are in danger.
• How does a film pass as a U film? The film
must be appropriate to the young audience
with no strong language and no sex, drugs, or
any gory scenes.
Age ratings for films.
• A 12A film will consist of brief sex
scenes and sexual references.
• It ay also contain moderate fight scenes
but nothing to detailed.
• A 12A film would not contain strong
language.

• An age 18 film will contain sex, drug, strong
language, fights and gory scenes throughout
the film.
• Strong violence.
• No-one under the age of 18 is allowed to see
any of these films as the age 18 rating is
classed as and for adults only.
• Even though the film is an 18 it does show
drug usage; but it has no intention of teaching
any adult that it is the right thing to do. (take
drugs).
How are age 15 and 18 films
rated?
• Both aged 15 and 18 films are rated on
how much strong language is used
throughout and other scenes such as
sex, drugs, fights, and gory scenes.
• The age ratings are put into place to tell
people under the age of 15 or 18 that
they’re not age adequate to see these
films.
