Causes And Differences Of Medieval Society In Modern Society
Modern society is inarguably different from medieval communities, quite frankly it would be
terrifying if they were exactly the same. Contemporary culture, in general, is not wholeheartedly
focused on the journey to salvation/ religious causes as was more common in medieval
communities. Communication, technology and education have broadened the scope of human
activity and opportunities. As far as declining religion and social hierarchy, it remains debatable
whether it is a cause or effect of modern technology. Though because humans are creatures of habit
and conservative as far as change, religious tradition and teachings remain embedded in many
communities. Despite similarities based on tradition and inherited values, modern society differs in
driving forces and religious prevalence due to a developed and educated environment.
One of the most obvious differences between the two time periods is the presence of a social
hierarchy. Though it would be naive to say that modern society flourishes with equality and
opportunity for all, equality is at least somewhat attempted by many societies. Medieval
communities justified opportunity difference with what they called the feudal system. This dictated
education and position in regard to other people. Most medieval people believed that God dictated a
person position in society and that is where they were meant to stay, as opposed to the modern idea
of moving up based on merit (or connections). As far as modern people, there is

Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Henry David Thoreau once said, "The savage man is never quite eradicated." Clearly, he is implying
that in every person there is savageness. Therefore, under the right conditions their savage nature
will emerge once again. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author utilizes symbolism to
convey the regression the boys undergo from being civilized to being barbaric. The mask
symbolizes the boys' freedom from society's expectation and there is the brutal killing of the sow,
which illustrates their loss of innocence and fall to savagery. By portraying this relapse into
barbarism, Golding seems to be commenting on the violent nature of humanities' basic instinct.
Golding utilizes the mask as symbol of liberation from societal norms, which leads the boys to
becoming savage. The author personifies the mask and it is able to "compel" the children (64). This
illustrates how the children can easily cave into temptation or an outside force. The mask's tempts
the boy to defy the rules and follow their primitive instinct. When Jack looks in to water after
putting on the mask, he "no longer... [sees] himself but at an awesome stranger" (63). Just by
wearing the mask, Jack is able to morph into someone who he, himself did not even know. Golding
employs the word "stranger" to present the ambiguity the mask provides. He describes the "stranger"
as "awesome" because in Jack's eyes this "stranger" is the person he aspires to be. Jack does not
want to be someone who

Avatar Film Analysis
Most of the science fiction works contain a crucial message that the writer wishes to convey to the
viewers. There are two categories of film message, one is positive and the other is negative. A
positive message is one that is expected to have favourable outcome to the audience, and
continuously aiming to promote better societal changes. In contrast, a negative message is one that
could deliver threats or unpleasant information to the audience, which could have significant impact
on the normal order of the society. This essay will argue that if the message contains positive
elements, then it is not a bad sign to embed science fiction works with a message. First, this essay
will suggest that the well–integrated message within a particular ... Show more content on

In addition, the film focus mainly on a human protagonist name Jake, and narrate his transformation
from a human to an alien, which is done through a human–developed technology that injects human
DNA into the alien bodies. After Jake's transformation, the scene opens another implicit message:
aliens are to be forcibly removed from their planet to create space for human activity (Veracini,
2011, p. 357). For the climax part of the film, the director establishes a passage that describes Jack
becoming a native of Pandora, and the director again aims to introduce the audience with a message
saying that human power against corporate force as to conserve our natural environment. This
message seemingly gives audience a wonderful twist of the plot and is quite thought provoking for
the audience. Hence, when a film includes well–integrated messages, it adds another layer of quality
to the entire plot whereby all the elements of the plot becomes more meaningful, and the general
audience could be attuned with the rhythm of the film because there is a logical flow from one scene
to the next.
Moreover, the positive messages embedded in science fiction works can have powerful influence on
the audience and the society, both locally and globally. In particular, most of the messages
embedded are prompted by the past events of world history or by the contemporary social
phenomena, and

Fallen Societies from Failure of Rulers
John F. Kennedy once wrote, "Efforts and courage are not enough without direction." From this I
think he's saying societies can fall if their not ruled the right way. And some of the societies seemed
like nothing could get in their way, but obviously they did because they didn't take good care of
them. That goes for a lot of other places also. Great societies fall due to social inequalities, a
dysfunctional or corrupt government, a crippled and inflating economy, and over expansion. That's
why Nazi Germany, The Civil Rights Era in America, and Ancient Rome didn't survive. A number
of societies fall because of rebellion and the people not being happy. All of the kids in my dystopian
novel were upset with the Unwinding process. They couldn't take the fear that they had to go
through from the ages 13–18. While reading you could feel the fear they went through such as, "and
in seconds, disobedience erupts into a full–scale revolt. Every terrible is now a terror. The guards
fire, but there are simply too many kids, and not enough tranq bullets. For every kid that goes down,
there's another kid that doesn't. The guards are quickly overwhelmed, and once they are, the mob
starts storming the front gate" (311). A lot of people were forced out of their public life so that was
really a con and started a rebellion. The citizens of that society thought that this was completely
unfair and they wouldn't stand for it. An example of this was, "Although many of these citizens

Technology Reach And Security's Grasp Analysis
Do not urgent to hug it; it will hurt you! I'm still thinking about what the real meaning of technology
is. An innovative idea? A skill of human? Or a way to help human development? No matter what
technology is, it must be used in a right way to bring advantage more than a disadvantage to human.
As the article, "Technology's Reach and Security's Grasp," by Andrew Updegrove states, "Modern
society harbors many bad habits. One is its penchant for enthusiastically embracing the benefits of
new technologies before considering their less desirable side effects" (web). People is urgent to hug

Symbolism in 'Lord of the Flies'
Prompt #2. Symbolism in Lord of the Flies
Humans live and develop in societies with rules, order and government, but humans are not perfect,
they have many deficiencies so does the societies they live in. When a group of schoolboys land on
a tropical island, Ralph takes on the role of leader by bringing all of the boys together and
organizing them. He first explains "There aren't any grownups. We shall have to look after
ourselves."(p.33), this brings up the question if the boys will have prosperity or will they succumb to
the evil on the island. At first the young boys start being successful and civilized but chaos soon
overruns them and evil starts to lurk over the island. William Golding's effective use of symbolism
helps emphasize and tie together the relationship between the evil in society and in human nature.
The fictional story of the group of British schoolboys stranded on an island and the decisions they
make, relate back to our society and the decisions we might make in a difficult situations. Lord of
The Flies is Golding's attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature.
The use of symbols in the novel to represent the flaws of human nature, helps create this theme. The
conch is one of the main objects the boys use and has a very strong evolution throughout the novel.
Likewise, painted faces are used as a method to show the change in human nature throughout a long
period of time. Another object that is persistent throughout the novel are Piggy's specs, they are
principally used to start fires but have a more deeper significance.
The conch is an important symbol from the beginning of the novel that Golding uses to represent
order, authority and democracy on the island. The conch has a persistent use throughout the novel,
as it is used to create rules that the boys must follow. Its initial use was to make assemblies in which
the boys would create rules and order. The most notable rules that Ralph decides to make is, "The
rule of the conch". He explains it furthermore, "We'll have 'Hands up' like at a school"( p.33), and
"I'll give the conch to the next person to speak."(p.33). This is the first rule that represents order and
authority, which demonstrates that the

Civilization and Its Discontents, by Sigmeund Freud Essay...
"Civilization and Its Discontents" is a book written by Sigmund Freud in 1929 (originally titled
"Das Unbehagen in der Kultur" or The Uneasiness in Culture.) This is considered to be one of
Freud's most important and widely read works. In this book, Freud explains his perspective by
enumerating what he sees as fundamental tensions between civilization and the individual. He
asserts that this tension stems from the individual's quest for freedom and non–conformity and
civilization's quest for uniformity and instinctual repression. Most of humankind's primitive instincts
are clearly destructive to the health and well–being of a human community (such as the desire to
kill.) As a direct result, civilization creates laws designed to prohibit ... Show more content on

Freud theorizes that this oceanic feeling is a regression into an earlier state of consciousness before
the ego had differentiated itself from the world of objects. Freud also theorizes that the religious
oceanic feeling arises from "the infant's helplessness and the longing for the father" and "imagine[s]
that the oceanic feeling became connected with religion later on." In other words, the oceanic
feeling is not a genuine religious experience, though people experience it that way. Throughout the
rest of the book, Freud addresses the conflict between civilization and the individual. He starts with
the fundamental paradox of civilization: we created civilization as a tool to protect ourselves from
unhappiness; however it is our largest source of unhappiness. He also points out that contemporary
technological advances have been a mixed blessing for human happiness. He also asks what the
purpose of civilization is if it is not to satisfy the pleasure principal. He later concedes that
civilization has to make compromises of happiness to fulfill its primary goal of bringing people into
peaceful relationships with each other, by making them subject to a higher, communal authority.
Freud included a cornucopia of various themes in this book. The first of these is the recurring theme
of the primal father and his psychological heritage. This is one of Freud's most controversial cultural
speculations. Freud proposes that human societies were

Lord Of The Flies Chapter 9 Analysis
In chapter nine, the boys have definitely proven the point that they have lost all their innocence. The
crime that the boys have committed unknowingly is beyond justification. The irony of the murder of
Simon is that he was coming to tell the boys that there is no beast and instead the boys mistook
Simon to be the beast, and ended his life.It is quite evident the boys have lost all control on all
aspects of their old lives, whether it b e by their appearance have changed, manners or their

Violent Video Games Effects On Society
Video games have been around for half a century, when the first simple tennis game was designed
by William Higinbotham in 1958. Since then, video games have gotten more in depth, and now
include the best graphics and a vast amount of options which include violent video games. Violent
video games have gotten more popular with the vast amount of variety including the franchise of
Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Grand Theft Auto. In addition, these are the most common and sought
after video games, and because of the violence in those games, debate has started whether or not
violent video games cause people especially adolescents to be more violent and destructive in
society. Since the debate has started, research has been conducted and the introduction of violent
video games into society has not resulted in violence to increase in adolescents and children. Over
the years violent video game sales have skyrocketed and there is no correlation with juvenile crime
rates that suggests that those games resulted with more violence in society. Furthermore, in a recent
article from ProCon the National Center for Education Statistics and Nicholas Lovell stated "The
number of high school students who had been in at least one physical fight decreased from 43% in
1991 to 25% in 2013, and student reports of criminal victimization at school dropped by more than
half from 1995 to 2011" (1). This demonstrates that violent video games do not result in violence,
but actually resulted in violence

Collectivism Is More Rational Than Belief
I will be using rationality as the main criterion for evaluating which philosophy is preferable, so the
resolution can basically be re–stated as "belief in collectivism is more rational than belief in
individualism". My case revolves around 3 independently functioning reasons for why an
affirmation of the resolution is more plausible than a negation of it. I. Collectivism increases the
chances of individual success The logic underlying this is simple. A society, by definition, is a group
of individuals. So when we "value the interests of society", we are really just valuing the interests of
the largest possible number of individuals within that society–– we are valuing the interests of the
majority. And since an individual is statistically more likely to part of the majority than the minority
(duh), collectivism ensures that any given individual is more likely to have their interests protected
than not. Thus, theoretically, collectivism increases the probability of individual prosperity.
However, this is not only demonstrable in theory; we can see empirical examples of this holding true
in practice as well. Just take a look at nature –– we can easily observe a large variety of species that
instinctively live in large, interactive groups in which collective welfare is valued over individual
welfare –– wolves, elephants, lions, chimpanzees, meerkats, bison, sheep, antelopes, ants, bees,
ducks, small fish, and many more fall into this category. There is a reason why such a

Significant Changes In The Forager Society
When humans transitioned from foragers to farmers, there were a few noticeable changes.
Materialistic values emerged. People became kinder and less kind simultaneously as sharing and
violence became less commonplace. More structure started to evolve in the society as it was
necessary to establish leaders. Energy consumption increased and was spent on work instead of
travelling to areas of abundance. Although some of these differences may not seem drastic, there
was and is a considerable difference between the ways the lifestyles are lead. In the forager society,
travel was necessary to survive. Although this did not allow people to possess many physical
belongings, it also provided basic essentials without a large amount of work. Hunters would kill
deer, feed their community, and shortly move on to the next place with a high deer population. The
women would gather berries and again share. There were limited ways to store food, so abundances
were spread amongst the community to avoid waste. Labor and skills were divided equally because
there were few people in each travelling group. Overall, foragers shared, had ... Show more content

The inequality that farming brought led to extremes in human welfare. However, farming also
brought structure and a willingness to compromise in order to avoid conflict that wasn't present in
foraging societies. When this transition was made, it was undoubtedly difficult for society to adjust.
People were not accustomed to living in close proximity for long periods of time and as a result,
early farming societies were often brutal in their lifestyles, with hard work and fear being the center
place. Compared to the foraging life of little work and being able to leave when disagreements
arose, this was a difficult situation. But as time passed, people became more aware of how to coexist

Lord Of The Flies : Society
"Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals." The posed
question is if society is controlled by people, or are people controlled by society. Some may argue
that society is controlled by people, but if you step into the light is that really the case. If you were
to look at society, really look at it, who is being controlled. Its not society itself, sure people affect
the directions society turns, but that is a small group of people who represent societies movement
and trends. People do not really affect what society truly is. Society is, as said before, a mental
concept, the popular, important figures in the world are the physical representation. The world is full
of unique individuals, although everyone is under influence of society. It is subconscious, but
always there. These next paragraphs will express how society controls people by elaborating on
three main ideas that show up in the book Lord of The Flies. Society controls our actions, we learn
from society and use it to try to be in control of others, and it is always there and so we have no idea
what to do apart from it.
Actions may be a conscious decision, but they are always under an influence of something
surrounding the person all the time affects them subconsciously. Roger, we learn, is a very violent
angry boy, although at the beginning he was under control. This was no other than society keeping
him in line, he threw rocks past the little boy not at. This is very

Close Reading Of Jane Eyre
Through a close reading of the selected passage of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre: An Autobiography,
a reader can see that Jane attempts to separate herself from her decisions by personifying her
emotions and giving them a specific voice, which strongly reflects the societal views of the time. At
this point in the story, Jane has discovered, on her wedding day, that Mr. Rochester is still married to
a woman named Bertha, and that woman still lives in his house. Distraught, Jane locks herself in her
room and tries to decide what she should do. When she wakes up the next day, she is again
confronted with what she needs to do in the wake of her discovery. When Jane awakens, she asks
herself what she should do and receives the answer "Leave Thornfield at once" (343). She describes

It instead shows Jane's inner struggle to do what is "right" versus what she desires. The separation
between the voice of herself and her thoughts exhibits her helplessness to change her path from what
her mind has already decided. This displays the heavy influence society has on Jane, which is
further proven by the personification of Jane's two strongest rivaling emotions. The heavy influence
of a patriarchal dominated society is evident in her "Conscience" being a strong male figure,
whereas her "Passion" is a weaker, feminine figure. Similarly, the strongest reasoning for Jane to
leave Thornfield is driven by the patriarchal demand for a female to remain "pure" until holy
marriage, rather than Jane's own desire to leave, further solidifying the idea that the voice given to
her mind is not just her own internal thoughts, but also the demands and expectations of

Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
As time passes on the island, the boys are unable to change their clothes; as a result, the clothing
become tattered and dirty, which is symbolic of their own human natures emerging as they are
disconnected from civilization. Clothing shows the personality of a person, and allows people to
express their true selves. In Lord of the Flies, the boys' clothing becomes stained and filthy, just as
their stained and filthy natures slowly emerge throughout the book. At the beginning of the book, the
boys' clothes are clean and free from any dirt:
The boy with fair hair lowered himself down the last few feet of rock and began to pick his way
toward the lagoon. Though he had taken off his school sweater and trailed it now from one hand, his
grey shirt stuck to him and his hair was plastered to his forehead. (Golding 1)
The cleanliness of Ralph's clothes is symbolic of the nature Ralph is accustomed to before he comes
to the island; a civilized nature. "For the most part, Ralph does not maintain his civilized dress, and
in allowing it to become tattered and dirty, he begins to resemble the savage stereotype" (Olsen 19).
When the clothes of the boys become dirty, their behavior also becomes dirty, as they are away from
civilization to cleanse both their physical and mental self.
The appearance of the boys changes throughout the book, as it represents how much the boys
change in nature. The way a person carries themselves with their appearance is evidence of the pride
they have in

The Fast and Violent Fall of Societies
Societies fall like comets falling to earth; fast and violently. Rome, Samurai in Japan, the civil rights
era, and the society in the novel delirium fell fast and changed everything. A corrupt government,
citizens in poverty, and lack of rights and freedoms all lead to the downfall of great societies.
Some great societies fall because of a corrupt government, and leaders. The government in the
society of Delirium is ruthless and harsh. They have raids where they make sure everyone is valid.
While checking everyone they are strict, harsh, and unforgiving. The regulators the raiders come
inside the citizen's house, tear their walls down, and look for signs of suspicious activity. All laws
are suspended on raid nights. The government is heartless, and will eliminate everything their way
without a second thought. They will kill animals that are barking too loudly, or kick a child looking
at them the wrong way. The government invades anything social because they are afraid everyone
will catch the deliria, love. When they invade, they let dogs loose, club people, and worst of all they
enjoy it. The leaders of the samurai in Japan were harsh like the government in delirium was. Young
samurai went for days without eating, marched barefoot in snow on long journeys, and held stiff
postures for hours without complaining. In order The young man's fencing master used to whack

Examples Of Violent Punishment On Society
Violent Punishment Harms Society There's something intrinsically wrong with harming a being who
cannot defend itself. Animal abuse is a disgusting reality most of us would like to ignore; an owner
stomping on their "beloved" pet is a visual that can make stomachs turn. Men hitting women is
absolutely frowned upon; it's one of the first actions little boys are taught never to do. So why is it
acceptable – sometimes even encouraged – to hit children? Children are adorable and innocent, just
like our furry companions, and they're far weaker than a parent would be, similar to how men and
women are. Why then does society condone this form of violence? Of course, there are several
answers to this question.
Parents are afraid that if they don't give their children harsh discipline they will grow to become
incompetent members of society. This is a valid concern; no caregiver would ever want to see their
child fail. Parents are also imperfect, they become frustrated and tired. Sometimes corporal
punishment can be easier to dole out instead of a more productive strategy. What mostly keeps the
cycle of corporal punishment going is the "My parents hit me and I turned out just fine" argument. If
violent punishment is all someone has ever known, it's understandable that they would turn to that
form of discipline in adulthood. When looking at corporal punishment in this context it seems
entirely justifiable; however, this would be ignoring a multitude of data that describes the

Does a Violent Media create a Violent Society?
This issue is one of constant debate, with no real solution. There are many things society as a whole
and individuals can do to appease or inflame the issue, however each argument has a counter
argument and a counter argument will exist for that and so on.
Because it is an issue of such heated debate with no answer or possibility of an answer should we
just leave the issue be and choose not to address it further? Or should we make the issue widely
known so society is more aware of the role the media can play. Or perhaps we should leave it to the
media to publicise that. After all the media does have a strong influence.

Some may claim de–sensitisation to these events in real life, due to seeing them on the news. I can

The Sacred Edicts: The Construction Of Social Order
Social order is developed by how people perceive the freedom of each individual. Each society
develops its own view of how the society should be constructed. Some may focus on what they
believe are divine rights of humans whereas, others may focus on the cultural and religious beliefs
to develop social order. The construction of social development is based off the views of people or
person in the leadership role of the society. Most societies establish a set of rules or guidelines to
insure that the order is understood and followed accordingly. The idea of personal freedom differs
among different regions of the world and sets the stage for social order in each society.
How a country defines personal freedom directly affects the social order. In China, as noted in K'ang

Violent Video Games Is A Negative Effects On Society
Sixty percent of boys and forty percent of girls who have played violent video games have ended up
committing some act of bullying as a middle schooler. Those percentages come from pure scientific
research, and just stating that fact should be enough to convince the minds of the public that young
children playing such violent games lead to a more dangerous society. Exposure to these violent
video games leads kids to have more violent intentions which of course leave a negative impact on
society. The style and the way the games are created simply encourage savage behavior that is not
normally expected of children. Soon enough kids will see violence as a social norm or even worse,
commit a massive crime as those have done before them. Though it seems that many people
disagree, violence in video games does have a poor influence on those children who are the future of
human society. Stylistically, video games are created in such ways that subconsciously promote
violence. In most games, the goal is to kill as many characters as the player possibly can to move on
to the next level. The rewards of gaining points or advancing to the next level is what excites
children, so in these games, when they are rewarded for committing a violent act, children will want
to continue doing so to gain more of those pleasing rewards. Another tactic used by the creators of
these games is that they put the player in the shooter's perspective. "Players of violent video games

The Animal Legal Defense Fund
Animal Abuse Murder and abuse cases never fail to startle society. Moral codes are flouted with
unmatched rigorousness by these indubitable egregious crimes. Sufferers in these cases are often
people. Nonetheless, these callous obscenities should not be seen as less important when animals are
the victims. Animals undergo horrendous abuse due to barbaric individuals, greed, and unnecessary
lab testing. Animals are beaten and abused on a daily basis due to barbaric individuals. Whether it be
from harmful intentions or pure negligence most cases go unreported. "Deliberate cruelty may
involve beating, shooting, stabbing animals, or setting them on fire. Neglect is not giving a
necessary food, water, shelter, or vet care" (Human Society). The lack of attention and care for these
animals can often lead to severe, and sometimes irrevocable damage. The Animal Legal Defense
Fund, ALDF for short, website tells of one story where neighbors of a farm complained to the local
humane society, "that the Colliers were neglecting many animals on their farm, including dogs and
horses. When they went to their property to investigate, they discovered dogs and horses in several
states of neglect and starvation and seized them out of concern for their immediate health"(ALDF).
Sadly, however, it can become much worse for animals. Owners will sometimes purposefully abuse
their animals. Unfortunately, occurrences like these are hardly uncommon. One such example, from

Flies, also expressing his philosophies saying that man is evil. Rousseau and Golding have many
contrasts that fight against each other's philosophies but was never spoken to each other because
they lived in different time periods. My view on the spirit of a human without order is that humans
are all good even though some don't show it. Jean–Jacques Rousseau's philosophies were published
in 1762 to explain the good of man. His philosophies explained reasoning is what causes societies to
corrupt the good of man and humans are just naturally good by themselves. Also Rousseau's beliefs
show that humans are good physically and mentally also believes," modern man's enslavement to his
own needs was responsible for all sorts of societal ills,"
<http://www.sparknotes.com/philosophy/rousseau/th emes.html>. All of his philosophies are based
of the ideas of modern philosophies saying that if humans didn't have a governments or societies,
what would their natural characteristics be and saying those characteristics are permanent and would
never change. So Rousseau took this philosophy and added on to it saying humans are good
naturally so the characteristic of being good is permanent and will never

Durkheim: Interconnectivity Within A Society
Durkheim stressed how interconnectivity within a society is necessary for success and ultimate
balance and stability. He linked the human body and its organs to society; the organs being the
necessary parts that work collectively to maintain stability and keep the person alive. Cultural norms
and values are placed within a society because of the socially deviant members who break said
established norms, which calls for punishment and consequences. Such deviant actions could be in
the form of social movements, protests, crime etc. Crime has been a part of human civilization since
the beginning of time, and many argue that crime breaks the organic and mechanical solidarity that
is, therefore crime is bad and should be extinguished from society.

The Role Of Politics, Religion, And Violence In The...
The classical era was a point during which humanity took a great leap forward in terms of
understanding and documenting itself. One work of fiction, the Metamorphoses by Apuleius, has
given historians a look into life into the second century C.E. by telling stories that were written in
that time period. Works of fiction often provide metaphors and allegories greater societal and
ideological trends of the civilizations they occupy, and that is especially true of this text. Apuleius
uses the extraordinary anecdotes of one character's journey to illustrate the complexities of life as he
knows it. In doing so he provides a window into a world long passed without even being aware of it.

The sheer volume of violence in the ancient world also tells the story of its inequality. If all was
equal in the ancient world, then it would not have been as violent as it was. A government that takes
care of the people it rules does not have to worry about them robbing and killing one another, and
yet it continued to happen over and over again. In a society built on dominance and conquest, it is
no wonder that slavery was a prevalent as it was. Though slaves were often treated as human beings
and, in some cases, could even hold public office, slaves could still be subjected to abuse and
unlivable conditions. Though slaves were often treated fairly and with dignity, they were still under
the direct control of people who could do virtually anything they wanted to them. A servant could
cheat on his wife and face a far more severe punishment than if the same crime was committed by
an aristocrat (161–162). The ancient world was made up of winners and losers–the winners were the
conquerors and the losers were the conquered. It seems as though slavery was unavoidable as it was
the only real way to keep these two groups apart in terms of social stature. Slavery also reflects the
perceived dominance that a more powerful civilization had over another. In civilizations so
concerned with how powerful and dominant they were, slavery almost had to be instituted in order
for ancient civilizations to keep both their values and empires intact. The only reason for some

Violent Video Games: Harmful Effects On American Society
Over 85% of video games contain some type of violence; some video games showing stronger acts
than others (Carnagey et al. 1). The exposure to such violent content affects the way humans
perform regular actions in their daily life and their perspective on those violent actions. These video
games are everywhere, thus being available to anyone who would like to enter a virtual reality
where they have control. The more people are exposed to it, the more addicted they become, and the
harmful effects become more noticeable. Video games with violent content are harmful to American
society because they affect the mental health of the player. Adolescents find a way to pass their time

The exposure allows the brain to have access to violent thoughts (Greitemeyer). Greitemeyer states
"Two recent meta–analyses showed that playing violent video games significantly increases the

the mind begin to think about what they player is seeing while playing. In a video games, the player
will force an innocent person out of their car, and then get in the car and ride away, or they can
simply get a car and just start to run over everyone that is standing on the sidewalk. All of these
actions are not happening in real life; however, the mind is picking up the information it is seeing. It
picks up the way the person forced out of their car immediately gave up the vehicle after being

Inequality And Violence During The United States
We are all unequal, therefore, build an unequal society, but not together, but superiors are
responsible for building it; those belonging to the elite. In the approach taken by the author of
Inequality & violence in the U.S. the capitalist system, makes us see the dark side of society,
distinguishing the types of violence in the author 's opinion, they are worrying. Violence is closely
linked to economic inequalities, ethnic or gender caused in most cases by a capitalist and militarist
system exacerbated.
It is not a violent act placing toxic waste in minority communities or expose the humblest workers to
harmful conditions for their health and that of your family? In America it is given more priority to
economic violence to peace, "over 80 percent of the U.S. population is in the bottom four
categories– middle, working, working poor, and underclass. Even the 14 percent in the upper–
middle class depend on wages" (Barbara, H. 2005 ). Politicians, policy–makers and big corporations
also advocate and contribute to the increasing of the inequality, and in their actions they harm many
lives, increasing even more the poverty, and when there's no human development thanks to all the
obstacles, there will be violence because they put impediments to their personal and social grow.
To have a development as a person needs to have a greater human capacity to maximize their social,
economic, cultural and political circles, and protect them for future generations through hard work,

The Effects of Violent Video Games on Society Essay
Introduction
On December 1, 1997, fourteen–year–old Michael Carneal entered school property in West
Paducah, Kentucky and began shooting a pistol at a group of students participating in a youth prayer
group, killing three students and injuring five others. On March 24, 1998, Mitchell Johnson (13) and
Andrew Golden (11) opened fire on students at a high school in Craighead County, Arkansas as they
exited the building for a fire alarm set off by the pair, killing five and wounding ten others. On April
20, 1999, Eric Harris (18) and Dylan Klebold (17) entered Columbine High School in Jefferson
County, Colorado and began a shooting rampage that left 13 dead and 21 others wounded. On April

For the average adolescent male, this equates to witnessing approximately 5,400 acts of violence per
month (Smith, Lachlan, Tamborini, 2003). Although these numbers seem impressive, it still only
represents the violence depicted in video games and does not include the violence children are
exposed to in other forms of media. Studies suggest that by 12 years of age, the average child has
witnessed over 100,000 acts of violence just on television alone (Bartholow, Anderson, 2001). Lt.
Col. Dave Grossman, author of the book On Killing and Director of the Killology Group, compares
video game violence to the desensitizing process the United States military uses to mentally prepare
soldiers for combat. Grossman argues that steady and repeated exposure to violent acts can cause the
human mind to rationalize and accept the behavior; a person becomes conditioned to the violence
and associates it to normal conduct (Grossman, Christensen, 2004). Grossman suggests that this
operant conditioning is made more dangerous in the fact that it is administered without discipline
and character development, which are the safeguards used in the military setting (Grossman,
Christensen, 2004). From a psychology standpoint, there are three basic explanations that theorists
use when attempting to correlate violent video

Lord of the Flies
William Golding's experience in World War II had an overwhelming effect on his view of humanity
and the evils of which it was capable. After the war, Golding resumed teaching and wrote his first
novel, Lord of the Flies.
Lord Of The Flies tells us the story of a handful of young schoolboys who had been marooned on an
island as the plane that they were travelling, on to escape the war was shot down. The only survivors
were the passengers, British schoolchildren between the ages of six and thirteen. It revolves around
how the children cope without the structure of authority, civilization and the watchful eye of grown
ups.
Though the novel is fictional, its exploration of the idea of human evil is at least partly based on

This bottled up rage on not being appointed leader would have disastrous consequences to the group
of boys, especially Ralph and Piggy.
Chapter 2:
The conflict between the instincts of civilization and savagery emerges quickly within the group: the
boys, especially Piggy, know that they must act with order and forethought if they are to be rescued,
but the longer they remain apart from the society of adults, the more difficult it becomes for them to
adhere to the disciplined behavior of civilization. In the First chapter the boys lead by Ralph try to
recreate order and a system that will improve the quality of life on the island until they are rescued,
but in Chapter 2 the enthusiasm and passion to do this is directed now to there more primal needs of
having fun on the beach and playing in the water, this prevents them from acting responsibly and the
only ones that do concentrate on improving there chances of being rescued are Ralph, Piggy and
Simon. As a result, the signal fire nearly fails, and a young boy apparently burns to death when the
forest catches fire. The controls of society still linger around the boys, who are confused and
ashamed when they learn the young boy is missing, a sign that a sense of morality and goodness is
still guides and restricts their savage behavior at this point.
Golding's portrayal of the main characters among the group of boys contributes to the allegorical
quality of Lord of the Flies,

Are Violent Video Games Dangerous For Young Mind And Society?

might go out and kill someone. Then why would they buy it? My second reason is that kids like I

What Is Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary Of A...
When it comes to societies, all of them have their own customs. These customs force the people of
each society to conform to specific standards in order to get along. Usually they have two types of
rules; these are written and unwritten. The majority of the rules are written so that people will be
more likely to follow them. On the other hand, unwritten rules are used to guide communication on
a more personal level. This can be seen in the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part–Time
Indian by Sherman Alexie. The author uses the story of a bullied Indian named Junior who decides
to go against societal norms and attend an all–white school in order to challenge the views of each
community. In this story, the Indians often resort to violence when faced with something that

On Junior's first day at Reardan he already starts to notice this difference. The whites, when faced
with their first Indian student, are a little afraid so they resort to what they were always taught to do
when faced with an unfamiliar situation. They start to insult him by calling him names like Chief
and Red–Skin. They also did this because they feared Junior. While explaining his first day at
Reardan he says, "None of those guys punched me or got violent. After all, I was a reservation
Indian, and no matter how geeky and weak I appeared to be, I was still a potential killer. So mostly
they called me names. Lots of names" (Alexie 63). This shows that they fear him just as much as he
fears them. Soon, they realize he is not a threat to them, and they quickly became friends with him.
This is shown when the Reardan crowd cheered Junior on after seeing the way the Indians treated
him at the first basketball game. They also booed the Indian team upon their arrival to the Reardan
gym. This shows how the whites use a verbal approach to deal with

Violent Lyrics Promote Violence In Society
A high schooler sits in a bus en route to school. Even with his earphones in and music playing from
his own phone, he overhears a song played by someone else that makes him uncomfortable.
"You and your husband have a fight/One of you tries to grab a knife, and during the struggle/He
accidentally gets his Adam's apple sliced (No!)/And while this is going on, his son just woke up/And
he walks in, she panics/And he gets his throat cut (Oh my God!)/So now they both dead, and you
slash your own throat/So now it's double homicide and suicide with no note." (Preezy)
He sees the group of students bobbing their heads to the beat of the song. Do they even care about
the message behind the lyrics? This song is called "Kim" by Eminem, and it's included in a website
article that lists fifty rap songs with violent lyrics. Song lyrics, whether they are good or bad, have a
profound effect on people's lives. The varieties of music are accepted by many. However, throughout
the years, there has been an increased acceptance of songs that promote violence. This has led some
to research the effect these violent songs can have on people and society as a whole. Aggressive
lyrics encourages violence in society because such music increases negative emotions and thoughts,
influences aggressive behavior, and affect the upbringing of children and adolescents.

Thanks for accepting Famousdebater and good luck my friend!
Framework:
Based on the definitions given in round one, we see this debate rests on ethics. That is, whether the
individual or society is "ethically paramount." Thus, it should be obvious that the framework for this
debate could only reasonably be set on how morality is determined. Once determined all that is left
is to apply ethics to our question.
An Intro To Ethics: Utilitarianism
Famousdebater and I Identify as Utilitarian's, and as it is widely accepted moral world view. Here is
a basic overview of utilitarian ethics.
Ethics delves into what ought to be rather than what is. Henry Sidgwick rightly points out a typical
flaw made when determining what ought to be done, or in other words, what is ethical. "we
frequently prescribe that this or that `ought ' to be done or aimed at without any express reference to
an ulterior end," (1) As John Stuart Mill says "All action is for the sake of some end." In order to
determine what we ought do we must observe what the results will be from that action. What ends
are produced? "all the rules of conduct which men prescribe to one another as moral rules are
really–––though in part unconsciously–––prescribed as a means to the general happiness of
mankind," Henry Sidgwick (2)This is basic utilitarianism, The Greatest good for the greatest
number. As Utilitarianism is the ethic both my opponent and I subscribe to and is a sound moral
philosophy, it ought to be the

A Violent Society Causes Domestic Violence Essay
People who are close to one another need to trust each other. We should trust our parents not to hurt
us, and to give us what we need to grow. When someone is abused, the trust is broken. Domestic
violence is the use of physical force within a home in any form of abuse. Abuse can be a whole
range of physical behaviour, slapping, hitting, beating, or using weapons to hurt someone. It
includes verbal and emotional abuse, where someone is constantly insulted and made to feel sad and
worthless. It can also include rape and sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is when someone forces another
to have sexual intercourse or do other sexual things against their will. Another form of abuse is total

Widespread belief that women were intellectually inferior to men led most societies to limit
women's education to learning domestic skills. Well–educated, upper–class men controlled most
positions of employment and power in society. Traditionally, female family members existed only in
terms of their relationships to men. As daughters, subject to the control and whim of fathers, women
represented a means of economic or political gain through marital arrangements. As wives, they
became their husbands' property, and symbols of power and status. Violence against women served
to coerce their acquiescence in this scheme and perpetuate subservience to male relatives. Legally
permitted abuse of women continued to exist in many Western cultures until the late nineteenth
century. Early Roman societies deemed a wife the property of her husband and therefore subject to
his control. According to early Roman law, a man could beat, divorce, or murder his wife for
offenses committed by her which belittled his honour or threatened his property rights. Roman
society considered enforcement of such rights of control essentially a private matter, and thus failed
to subject the husband to either public scrutiny or disapproval. Both the Old and New Testament
attest to the belief in early teachings in the obedience of women. Indeed, Eve's creation from the rib
of Adam provided an excuse for

Summary Of The Stranger By Albert Camus
My silent sustained reading book is The Stranger written by Albert Camus. It was first published by
Hamish Hamilton in 1946. Even though the story was written eight decades ago, the message
Camus was trying to convey is still pliable to current day.
The novel starts off with the narrator, Guy Meursault, just receiving news of his mother's passing
and her funeral that takes place the following day. Meursault shows no signs of remorse over losing
his own mother and even refuses to look at his own mother's body. Once the funeral was over the
narrator meets up with his former employee, who he takes to see a comedy movie and starts a
relationship with her. In the following days, Meursault assists his neighbor Raymond Sintès in

The story 's protagonist is Guy Meursault, a Frenchman in his late thirties. While the protagonist is a
man, the antagonist is society itself. Society is the one who finds Meursault guilty, just because he
cannot grasp its composition. He finds it difficult to comprehend his own actions as wrong due to
his own logic of society. While the story takes place in Algeria, which is a country in North Africa, it
feels as if it could have taken place anywhere. In spite of the topic of the story, which is concerning
death, the tone of Camus' writing makes it seem as if the narrator is uncaring and indifferent to the
topic. Throughout his mother's death and his neighbor's cruel acts Meursault doesn't feel anything
about these things; the author makes it appear that the protagonist is heartless and cold. The narrator
seems to have no reason not to believe Sintès' story about his girlfriend and even helps him
emotionally and physically hurt her.
The point of view in the book is first person, which allows the audience to understand Meursault's
thoughts and opinions. We are able to hear that he feels no remorse for any of this actions and even
thinks of death as something trivial for it is part of everyday life. I feel that if the story wasn't in first
person the story would not be renown as a classic. For without the narrator's perspective Camus'
book would not be known for describing the human condition. The central

Power In Lord Of The Flies Analysis
In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies, it has successfully unpacked Golding's personal ideas and
values about power, that are to be held between different characters in the novel. It teaches the
audience that humans have the ability to maintain and destroy a corruptive situation. Power can be
represented in different circumstances and depends on who holds the ultimate power. The two
leading characters, Ralph and Jack have made an occurrence of disintegrating their own society
throughout the novel. The amount of power on the island corrupts absolutely whilst the savagery in
the boys have invaded their civilised selfhood.
As the boys slowly inhabit on the maroon island, the audience develops an understanding of Jack
and Ralph's different sets of beliefs, that are influenced by their view on the society. Golding has
added concepts of allegories to make the audience challenge their thoughts power and how it can be
utilised. The whole novel is referred to allegory for danger of the excessive power and how it has the
ability to give way and inherent a savage nature. Conversely, this is demonstrated by all of the boys
on the island. When the boys begin to adapt to the island, Ralph's lieutenant, Piggy finds a alluring,
white pink shell, called the conch. Both Ralph and Piggy decide to utilise the conch by allowing a
individual to speak while everyone must obey and listen to them. Although the conch has a certain
purity to others, it begins to foreshadow its use. Consequently,

Savagery In Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis
The Fall Into Savagery Society is the one thing that keeps the world together, that separates men

##titudes Of Civilization In William Golding's Lord Of The...
We all consider ourselves civilized. We think this because we are sophisticated and cultured, and
have laws and order. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding explores a scenario where schoolboys
enter a lawless and orderless paradise. Through his depiction of characters, Jack, Roger, and the
naval officer, he reveals his attitudes towards civilization and civilized behavior. Golding shows that
civilization and society are only masks, a constraint for human's true selves because no one is truly
civilized, but instead innately uncivilized and savage.
From the beginning of the novel, Golding uses Jack Merridew's development and actions to present
his attitudes of civilizations and its constraints. Jack begins as a normal choir boy, with respect to
rules and against uncivilized behavior: "We've got to have rules, and obey them. After all, we're not
savages. We're English and the English are best at everything." (42) He believes in civilized actions
and following rules, which is continually contrasted by his behavior in later chapters. He neglects
his duty to keep the signal fire going, and he doesn't follow the rules of the conch. However, the one
duty he doesn't neglect to do, is hunting. But the way Jack feels about doing it, does change. Jack,
Simon, and Ralph all go on the first adventure trip of the island, and they find a pig without even
searching for one, but it is Jack's responsibility to hunt and kill it, as he was designated as one of the
hunters. However, he

Analysis Of Ray Bradbury 's ' The Veldt '
Loredona Lazzara Engish 102 July 7, 2015 Dehumanizing Society Technology can be a beautiful
thing, which is very convenient when connecting with others. It may even leave our mind with some
peace. Most of the time it is what keeps us in touch and strengthens our relationships with old
friends, family members and co– workers. Technology today can provide opportunities for students
all over the world to receive an education online, while still maintaining work and family schedules.
Students are able to obtain a degree online just as any student on campus may, with just a click of
button on a screen. How would we feel if our personal technology devices were taken away? Many
of us may feel like a part of us is missing but, in reality we've been taken away from interpersonal
communication and interactions. Not only is technology hurting our younger children in society but,
many of our adults too. In Ray Bradbury's story, "The Veldt" he describes how the more technology
you have the more dissatisfied you become. Society has come to show us how technology is slowly
dehumanizing our world. In our world today, technology has become more and more advanced and
it seems to take control over our lives. In the poem, "The Veldt" the theme had been set on how
technology had make life somewhat easier. Technology had made life so easy "that it wasn't even
living anymore," the father, George states in the story. Much of the technology in the Veldt had
ruined the life that existed before

How Symbolism Reveals Humanity's Regression to Savagery in Lord of the Flies

  • 1. Causes And Differences Of Medieval Society In Modern Society Modern society is inarguably different from medieval communities, quite frankly it would be terrifying if they were exactly the same. Contemporary culture, in general, is not wholeheartedly focused on the journey to salvation/ religious causes as was more common in medieval communities. Communication, technology and education have broadened the scope of human activity and opportunities. As far as declining religion and social hierarchy, it remains debatable whether it is a cause or effect of modern technology. Though because humans are creatures of habit and conservative as far as change, religious tradition and teachings remain embedded in many communities. Despite similarities based on tradition and inherited values, modern society differs in driving forces and religious prevalence due to a developed and educated environment. One of the most obvious differences between the two time periods is the presence of a social hierarchy. Though it would be naive to say that modern society flourishes with equality and opportunity for all, equality is at least somewhat attempted by many societies. Medieval communities justified opportunity difference with what they called the feudal system. This dictated education and position in regard to other people. Most medieval people believed that God dictated a person position in society and that is where they were meant to stay, as opposed to the modern idea of moving up based on merit (or connections). As far as modern people, there is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Lord of the Flies by William Golding Henry David Thoreau once said, "The savage man is never quite eradicated." Clearly, he is implying that in every person there is savageness. Therefore, under the right conditions their savage nature will emerge once again. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author utilizes symbolism to convey the regression the boys undergo from being civilized to being barbaric. The mask symbolizes the boys' freedom from society's expectation and there is the brutal killing of the sow, which illustrates their loss of innocence and fall to savagery. By portraying this relapse into barbarism, Golding seems to be commenting on the violent nature of humanities' basic instinct. Golding utilizes the mask as symbol of liberation from societal norms, which leads the boys to becoming savage. The author personifies the mask and it is able to "compel" the children (64). This illustrates how the children can easily cave into temptation or an outside force. The mask's tempts the boy to defy the rules and follow their primitive instinct. When Jack looks in to water after putting on the mask, he "no longer... [sees] himself but at an awesome stranger" (63). Just by wearing the mask, Jack is able to morph into someone who he, himself did not even know. Golding employs the word "stranger" to present the ambiguity the mask provides. He describes the "stranger" as "awesome" because in Jack's eyes this "stranger" is the person he aspires to be. Jack does not want to be someone who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Avatar Film Analysis Most of the science fiction works contain a crucial message that the writer wishes to convey to the viewers. There are two categories of film message, one is positive and the other is negative. A positive message is one that is expected to have favourable outcome to the audience, and continuously aiming to promote better societal changes. In contrast, a negative message is one that could deliver threats or unpleasant information to the audience, which could have significant impact on the normal order of the society. This essay will argue that if the message contains positive elements, then it is not a bad sign to embed science fiction works with a message. First, this essay will suggest that the well–integrated message within a particular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, the film focus mainly on a human protagonist name Jake, and narrate his transformation from a human to an alien, which is done through a human–developed technology that injects human DNA into the alien bodies. After Jake's transformation, the scene opens another implicit message: aliens are to be forcibly removed from their planet to create space for human activity (Veracini, 2011, p. 357). For the climax part of the film, the director establishes a passage that describes Jack becoming a native of Pandora, and the director again aims to introduce the audience with a message saying that human power against corporate force as to conserve our natural environment. This message seemingly gives audience a wonderful twist of the plot and is quite thought provoking for the audience. Hence, when a film includes well–integrated messages, it adds another layer of quality to the entire plot whereby all the elements of the plot becomes more meaningful, and the general audience could be attuned with the rhythm of the film because there is a logical flow from one scene to the next. Moreover, the positive messages embedded in science fiction works can have powerful influence on the audience and the society, both locally and globally. In particular, most of the messages embedded are prompted by the past events of world history or by the contemporary social phenomena, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Fallen Societies from Failure of Rulers John F. Kennedy once wrote, "Efforts and courage are not enough without direction." From this I think he's saying societies can fall if their not ruled the right way. And some of the societies seemed like nothing could get in their way, but obviously they did because they didn't take good care of them. That goes for a lot of other places also. Great societies fall due to social inequalities, a dysfunctional or corrupt government, a crippled and inflating economy, and over expansion. That's why Nazi Germany, The Civil Rights Era in America, and Ancient Rome didn't survive. A number of societies fall because of rebellion and the people not being happy. All of the kids in my dystopian novel were upset with the Unwinding process. They couldn't take the fear that they had to go through from the ages 13–18. While reading you could feel the fear they went through such as, "and in seconds, disobedience erupts into a full–scale revolt. Every terrible is now a terror. The guards fire, but there are simply too many kids, and not enough tranq bullets. For every kid that goes down, there's another kid that doesn't. The guards are quickly overwhelmed, and once they are, the mob starts storming the front gate" (311). A lot of people were forced out of their public life so that was really a con and started a rebellion. The citizens of that society thought that this was completely unfair and they wouldn't stand for it. An example of this was, "Although many of these citizens proved to be ... Or a way to help human development? No matter what technology is, it must be used in a right way to bring advantage more than a disadvantage to human. As the article, "Technology's Reach and Security's Grasp," by Andrew Updegrove states, "Modern society harbors many bad habits. One is its penchant for enthusiastically embracing the benefits of new technologies before considering their less desirable side effects" (web). • 11. Symbolism in 'Lord of the Flies' Prompt #2. Symbolism in Lord of the Flies Humans live and develop in societies with rules, order and government, but humans are not perfect, they have many deficiencies so does the societies they live in. When a group of schoolboys land on a tropical island, Ralph takes on the role of leader by bringing all of the boys together and organizing them. He first explains "There aren't any grownups. We shall have to look after ourselves."(p.33), this brings up the question if the boys will have prosperity or will they succumb to the evil on the island. At first the young boys start being successful and civilized but chaos soon overruns them and evil starts to lurk over the island. William Golding's effective use of symbolism helps emphasize and tie together the relationship between the evil in society and in human nature. The fictional story of the group of British schoolboys stranded on an island and the decisions they make, relate back to our society and the decisions we might make in a difficult situations. Lord of The Flies is Golding's attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature. The use of symbols in the novel to represent the flaws of human nature, helps create this theme. The conch is one of the main objects the boys use and has a very strong evolution throughout the novel. Likewise, painted faces are used as a method to show the change in human nature throughout a long period of time. Another object that is persistent throughout the novel are Piggy's specs, they are principally used to start fires but have a more deeper significance. The conch is an important symbol from the beginning of the novel that Golding uses to represent order, authority and democracy on the island. The conch has a persistent use throughout the novel, as it is used to create rules that the boys must follow. Its initial use was to make assemblies in which the boys would create rules and order. The most notable rules that Ralph decides to make is, "The rule of the conch". He explains it furthermore, "We'll have 'Hands up' like at a school"( p.33), and "I'll give the conch to the next person to speak."(p.33). This is the first rule that represents order and authority, which demonstrates that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Civilization and Its Discontents, by Sigmeund Freud Essay... "Civilization and Its Discontents" is a book written by Sigmund Freud in 1929 (originally titled "Das Unbehagen in der Kultur" or The Uneasiness in Culture.) This is considered to be one of Freud's most important and widely read works. In this book, Freud explains his perspective by enumerating what he sees as fundamental tensions between civilization and the individual. He asserts that this tension stems from the individual's quest for freedom and non–conformity and civilization's quest for uniformity and instinctual repression. Most of humankind's primitive instincts are clearly destructive to the health and well–being of a human community (such as the desire to kill.) As a direct result, civilization creates laws designed to prohibit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Freud theorizes that this oceanic feeling is a regression into an earlier state of consciousness before the ego had differentiated itself from the world of objects. Freud also theorizes that the religious oceanic feeling arises from "the infant's helplessness and the longing for the father" and "imagine[s] that the oceanic feeling became connected with religion later on." In other words, the oceanic feeling is not a genuine religious experience, though people experience it that way. Throughout the rest of the book, Freud addresses the conflict between civilization and the individual. He starts with the fundamental paradox of civilization: we created civilization as a tool to protect ourselves from unhappiness; however it is our largest source of unhappiness. He also points out that contemporary technological advances have been a mixed blessing for human happiness. He also asks what the purpose of civilization is if it is not to satisfy the pleasure principal. He later concedes that civilization has to make compromises of happiness to fulfill its primary goal of bringing people into peaceful relationships with each other, by making them subject to a higher, communal authority. Freud included a cornucopia of various themes in this book. The first of these is the recurring theme of the primal father and his psychological heritage. This is one of Freud's most controversial cultural speculations. Freud proposes that human societies were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The crime that the boys have committed unknowingly is beyond justification. The irony of the murder of Simon is that he was coming to tell the boys that there is no beast and instead the boys mistook Simon to be the beast, and ended his life.It is quite evident the boys have lost all control on all aspects of their old lives, whether it b e by their appearance have changed, manners or their perspective on abiding rules. • 17. Violent Video Games Effects On Society Video games have been around for half a century, when the first simple tennis game was designed by William Higinbotham in 1958. Since then, video games have gotten more in depth, and now include the best graphics and a vast amount of options which include violent video games. Violent video games have gotten more popular with the vast amount of variety including the franchise of Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Grand Theft Auto. In addition, these are the most common and sought after video games, and because of the violence in those games, debate has started whether or not violent video games cause people especially adolescents to be more violent and destructive in society. Since the debate has started, research has been conducted and the introduction of violent video games into society has not resulted in violence to increase in adolescents and children. Over the years violent video game sales have skyrocketed and there is no correlation with juvenile crime rates that suggests that those games resulted with more violence in society. Furthermore, in a recent article from ProCon the National Center for Education Statistics and Nicholas Lovell stated "The number of high school students who had been in at least one physical fight decreased from 43% in 1991 to 25% in 2013, and student reports of criminal victimization at school dropped by more than half from 1995 to 2011" (1). This demonstrates that violent video games do not result in violence, but actually resulted in violence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Collectivism Is More Rational Than Belief I will be using rationality as the main criterion for evaluating which philosophy is preferable, so the resolution can basically be re–stated as "belief in collectivism is more rational than belief in individualism". My case revolves around 3 independently functioning reasons for why an affirmation of the resolution is more plausible than a negation of it. I. Collectivism increases the chances of individual success The logic underlying this is simple. A society, by definition, is a group of individuals. So when we "value the interests of society", we are really just valuing the interests of the largest possible number of individuals within that society–– we are valuing the interests of the majority. And since an individual is statistically more likely to part of the majority than the minority (duh), collectivism ensures that any given individual is more likely to have their interests protected than not. Thus, theoretically, collectivism increases the probability of individual prosperity. However, this is not only demonstrable in theory; we can see empirical examples of this holding true in practice as well. Just take a look at nature –– we can easily observe a large variety of species that instinctively live in large, interactive groups in which collective welfare is valued over individual welfare –– wolves, elephants, lions, chimpanzees, meerkats, bison, sheep, antelopes, ants, bees, ducks, small fish, and many more fall into this category. There is a reason why such a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Significant Changes In The Forager Society When humans transitioned from foragers to farmers, there were a few noticeable changes. Materialistic values emerged. People became kinder and less kind simultaneously as sharing and violence became less commonplace. More structure started to evolve in the society as it was necessary to establish leaders. Energy consumption increased and was spent on work instead of travelling to areas of abundance. Although some of these differences may not seem drastic, there was and is a considerable difference between the ways the lifestyles are lead. In the forager society, travel was necessary to survive. Although this did not allow people to possess many physical belongings, it also provided basic essentials without a large amount of work. Hunters would kill deer, feed their community, and shortly move on to the next place with a high deer population. The women would gather berries and again share. There were limited ways to store food, so abundances were spread amongst the community to avoid waste. Labor and skills were divided equally because there were few people in each travelling group. Overall, foragers shared, had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The inequality that farming brought led to extremes in human welfare. • 23. Lord Of The Flies : Society "Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals." The posed question is if society is controlled by people, or are people controlled by society. Some may argue that society is controlled by people, but if you step into the light is that really the case. If you were to look at society, really look at it, who is being controlled. Its not society itself, sure people affect the directions society turns, but that is a small group of people who represent societies movement and trends. People do not really affect what society truly is. Society is, as said before, a mental concept, the popular, important figures in the world are the physical representation. The world is full of unique individuals, although everyone is under influence of society. It is subconscious, but always there. These next paragraphs will express how society controls people by elaborating on three main ideas that show up in the book Lord of The Flies. Society controls our actions, we learn from society and use it to try to be in control of others, and it is always there and so we have no idea what to do apart from it. Actions may be a conscious decision, but they are always under an influence of something surrounding the person all the time affects them subconsciously. Roger, we learn, is a very violent angry boy, although at the beginning he was under control. This was no other than society keeping him in line, he threw rocks past the little boy not at. Close Reading Of Jane Eyre Through a close reading of the selected passage of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre: An Autobiography, a reader can see that Jane attempts to separate herself from her decisions by personifying her emotions and giving them a specific voice, which strongly reflects the societal views of the time. At this point in the story, Jane has discovered, on her wedding day, that Mr. Rochester is still married to a woman named Bertha, and that woman still lives in his house. Distraught, Jane locks herself in her room and tries to decide what she should do. When she wakes up the next day, she is again confronted with what she needs to do in the wake of her discovery. When Jane awakens, she asks herself what she should do and receives the answer "Leave Thornfield at once" (343). She describes this as the answer her mind gives her, ... The separation between the voice of herself and her thoughts exhibits her helplessness to change her path from what her mind has already decided. This displays the heavy influence society has on Jane, which is further proven by the personification of Jane's two strongest rivaling emotions. The heavy influence of a patriarchal dominated society is evident in her "Conscience" being a strong male figure, whereas her "Passion" is a weaker, feminine figure. Similarly, the strongest reasoning for Jane to leave Thornfield is driven by the patriarchal demand for a female to remain "pure" until holy marriage, rather than Jane's own desire to leave, further solidifying the idea that the voice given to her mind is not just her own internal thoughts, but also the demands and expectations of ...

  • 29. Lord Of The Flies By William Golding As time passes on the island, the boys are unable to change their clothes; as a result, the clothing become tattered and dirty, which is symbolic of their own human natures emerging as they are disconnected from civilization. Clothing shows the personality of a person, and allows people to express their true selves. In Lord of the Flies, the boys' clothing becomes stained and filthy, just as their stained and filthy natures slowly emerge throughout the book. At the beginning of the book, the boys' clothes are clean and free from any dirt: The boy with fair hair lowered himself down the last few feet of rock and began to pick his way toward the lagoon. Though he had taken off his school sweater and trailed it now from one hand, his grey shirt stuck to him and his hair was plastered to his forehead. (Golding 1) The cleanliness of Ralph's clothes is symbolic of the nature Ralph is accustomed to before he comes to the island; a civilized nature. "For the most part, Ralph does not maintain his civilized dress, and in allowing it to become tattered and dirty, he begins to resemble the savage stereotype" (Olsen 19). When the clothes of the boys become dirty, their behavior also becomes dirty, as they are away from civilization to cleanse both their physical and mental self. The appearance of the boys changes throughout the book, as it represents how much the boys change in nature. The way a person carries themselves with their appearance is evidence of the pride they have in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rome, Samurai in Japan, the civil rights era, and the society in the novel delirium fell fast and changed everything. A corrupt government, citizens in poverty, and lack of rights and freedoms all lead to the downfall of great societies. Some great societies fall because of a corrupt government, and leaders. The government in the society of Delirium is ruthless and harsh. They have raids where they make sure everyone is valid. While checking everyone they are strict, harsh, and unforgiving. The regulators the raiders come inside the citizen's house, tear their walls down, and look for signs of suspicious activity. All laws are suspended on raid nights. The government is heartless, and will eliminate everything their way without a second thought. They will kill animals that are barking too loudly, or kick a child looking at them the wrong way. The government invades anything social because they are afraid everyone will catch the deliria, love. When they invade, they let dogs loose, club people, and worst of all they enjoy it. The leaders of the samurai in Japan were harsh like the government in delirium was. • 33. Examples Of Violent Punishment On Society Violent Punishment Harms Society There's something intrinsically wrong with harming a being who cannot defend itself. Animal abuse is a disgusting reality most of us would like to ignore; an owner stomping on their "beloved" pet is a visual that can make stomachs turn. Men hitting women is absolutely frowned upon; it's one of the first actions little boys are taught never to do. So why is it acceptable – sometimes even encouraged – to hit children? Children are adorable and innocent, just like our furry companions, and they're far weaker than a parent would be, similar to how men and women are. Why then does society condone this form of violence? Of course, there are several answers to this question. Parents are afraid that if they don't give their children harsh discipline they will grow to become incompetent members of society. This is a valid concern; no caregiver would ever want to see their child fail. Parents are also imperfect, they become frustrated and tired. Sometimes corporal punishment can be easier to dole out instead of a more productive strategy. What mostly keeps the cycle of corporal punishment going is the "My parents hit me and I turned out just fine" argument. If violent punishment is all someone has ever known, it's understandable that they would turn to that form of discipline in adulthood. When looking at corporal punishment in this context it seems entirely justifiable; however, this would be ignoring a multitude of data that describes the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many things society as a whole and individuals can do to appease or inflame the issue, however each argument has a counter argument and a counter argument will exist for that and so on. Because it is an issue of such heated debate with no answer or possibility of an answer should we just leave the issue be and choose not to address it further? Or should we make the issue widely known so society is more aware of the role the media can play. Or perhaps we should leave it to the media to publicise that. After all the media does have a strong influence. Take the late 1980's film Terminator, one of the highest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each society develops its own view of how the society should be constructed. Some may focus on what they believe are divine rights of humans whereas, others may focus on the cultural and religious beliefs to develop social order. The construction of social development is based off the views of people or person in the leadership role of the society. Most societies establish a set of rules or guidelines to insure that the order is understood and followed accordingly. The idea of personal freedom differs among different regions of the world and sets the stage for social order in each society. • 40. Violent Video Games Is A Negative Effects On Society Sixty percent of boys and forty percent of girls who have played violent video games have ended up committing some act of bullying as a middle schooler. Those percentages come from pure scientific research, and just stating that fact should be enough to convince the minds of the public that young children playing such violent games lead to a more dangerous society. Exposure to these violent video games leads kids to have more violent intentions which of course leave a negative impact on society. The style and the way the games are created simply encourage savage behavior that is not normally expected of children. Soon enough kids will see violence as a social norm or even worse, commit a massive crime as those have done before them. Though it seems that many people disagree, violence in video games does have a poor influence on those children who are the future of human society. Stylistically, video games are created in such ways that subconsciously promote violence. In most games, the goal is to kill as many characters as the player possibly can to move on to the next level. The rewards of gaining points or advancing to the next level is what excites children, so in these games, when they are rewarded for committing a violent act, children will want to continue doing so to gain more of those pleasing rewards. Another tactic used by the creators of these games is that they put the player in the shooter's perspective. "Players of violent video games are more likely to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sufferers in these cases are often people. Nonetheless, these callous obscenities should not be seen as less important when animals are the victims. Animals undergo horrendous abuse due to barbaric individuals, greed, and unnecessary lab testing. Animals are beaten and abused on a daily basis due to barbaric individuals. Whether it be from harmful intentions or pure negligence most cases go unreported. "Deliberate cruelty may involve beating, shooting, stabbing animals, or setting them on fire. Neglect is not giving a necessary food, water, shelter, or vet care" (Human Society). The lack of attention and care for these animals can often lead to severe, and sometimes irrevocable damage. The Animal Legal Defense Fund, ALDF for short, website tells of one story where neighbors of a farm complained to the local humane society, "that the Colliers were neglecting many animals on their farm, including dogs and horses. When they went to their property to investigate, they discovered dogs and horses in several states of neglect and starvation and seized them out of concern for their immediate health"(ALDF). Rousseau is known for his first book, A Discourse on the Sciences and Arts, about his philosophies saying that man is good. Golding is known for his bestselling novel he ever wrote, Lord of The Flies, also expressing his philosophies saying that man is evil. Rousseau and Golding have many contrasts that fight against each other's philosophies but was never spoken to each other because they lived in different time periods. My view on the spirit of a human without order is that humans are all good even though some don't show it. Jean–Jacques Rousseau's philosophies were published in 1762 to explain the good of man. His philosophies explained reasoning is what causes societies to corrupt the good of man and humans are just naturally good by themselves. Also Rousseau's beliefs show that humans are good physically and mentally also believes," modern man's enslavement to his own needs was responsible for all sorts of societal ills," <http://www.sparknotes.com/philosophy/rousseau/th emes.html>. A government that takes care of the people it rules does not have to worry about them robbing and killing one another, and yet it continued to happen over and over again. In a society built on dominance and conquest, it is no wonder that slavery was a prevalent as it was. Though slaves were often treated as human beings and, in some cases, could even hold public office, slaves could still be subjected to abuse and unlivable conditions. Though slaves were often treated fairly and with dignity, they were still under the direct control of people who could do virtually anything they wanted to them. A servant could cheat on his wife and face a far more severe punishment than if the same crime was committed by an aristocrat (161–162). The ancient world was made up of winners and losers–the winners were the conquerors and the losers were the conquered. It seems as though slavery was unavoidable as it was the only real way to keep these two groups apart in terms of social stature. For the average adolescent male, this equates to witnessing approximately 5,400 acts of violence per month (Smith, Lachlan, Tamborini, 2003). Although these numbers seem impressive, it still only represents the violence depicted in video games and does not include the violence children are exposed to in other forms of media. Studies suggest that by 12 years of age, the average child has witnessed over 100,000 acts of violence just on television alone (Bartholow, Anderson, 2001). Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, author of the book On Killing and Director of the Killology Group, compares video game violence to the desensitizing process the United States military uses to mentally prepare soldiers for combat. Grossman argues that steady and repeated exposure to violent acts can cause the human mind to rationalize and accept the behavior; a person becomes conditioned to the violence and associates it to normal conduct (Grossman, Christensen, 2004). Grossman suggests that this operant conditioning is made more dangerous in the fact that it is administered without discipline and character development, which are the safeguards used in the military setting (Grossman, Christensen, 2004). These customs force the people of each society to conform to specific standards in order to get along. Usually they have two types of rules; these are written and unwritten. The majority of the rules are written so that people will be more likely to follow them. On the other hand, unwritten rules are used to guide communication on a more personal level. Ethics delves into what ought to be rather than what is. Henry Sidgwick rightly points out a typical flaw made when determining what ought to be done, or in other words, what is ethical. "we frequently prescribe that this or that `ought ' to be done or aimed at without any express reference to an ulterior end," (1) As John Stuart Mill says "All action is for the sake of some end." In order to determine what we ought do we must observe what the results will be from that action. What ends are produced? "all the rules of conduct which men prescribe to one another as moral rules are really–––though in part unconsciously–––prescribed as a means to the general happiness of mankind," Henry Sidgwick (2)This is basic utilitarianism, The Greatest good for the greatest number. Widespread belief that women were intellectually inferior to men led most societies to limit women's education to learning domestic skills. Well–educated, upper–class men controlled most positions of employment and power in society. Traditionally, female family members existed only in terms of their relationships to men. As daughters, subject to the control and whim of fathers, women represented a means of economic or political gain through marital arrangements. As wives, they became their husbands' property, and symbols of power and status. Violence against women served to coerce their acquiescence in this scheme and perpetuate subservience to male relatives. Legally permitted abuse of women continued to exist in many Western cultures until the late nineteenth century. Early Roman societies deemed a wife the property of her husband and therefore subject to his control. According to early Roman law, a man could beat, divorce, or murder his wife for offenses committed by her which belittled his honour or threatened his property rights. Roman society considered enforcement of such rights of control essentially a private matter, and thus failed to subject the husband to either public scrutiny or disapproval. • 70. Summary Of The Stranger By Albert Camus My silent sustained reading book is The Stranger written by Albert Camus. It was first published by Hamish Hamilton in 1946. Even though the story was written eight decades ago, the message Camus was trying to convey is still pliable to current day. The novel starts off with the narrator, Guy Meursault, just receiving news of his mother's passing and her funeral that takes place the following day. Meursault shows no signs of remorse over losing his own mother and even refuses to look at his own mother's body. Once the funeral was over the narrator meets up with his former employee, who he takes to see a comedy movie and starts a relationship with her. In the following days, Meursault assists his neighbor Raymond Sintès in exacting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The story 's protagonist is Guy Meursault, a Frenchman in his late thirties. While the protagonist is a man, the antagonist is society itself. Society is the one who finds Meursault guilty, just because he cannot grasp its composition. He finds it difficult to comprehend his own actions as wrong due to his own logic of society. While the story takes place in Algeria, which is a country in North Africa, it feels as if it could have taken place anywhere. In spite of the topic of the story, which is concerning death, the tone of Camus' writing makes it seem as if the narrator is uncaring and indifferent to the topic. Throughout his mother's death and his neighbor's cruel acts Meursault doesn't feel anything about these things; the author makes it appear that the protagonist is heartless and cold. The narrator seems to have no reason not to believe Sintès' story about his girlfriend and even helps him emotionally and physically hurt her. The point of view in the book is first person, which allows the audience to understand Meursault's thoughts and opinions. We are able to hear that he feels no remorse for any of this actions and even thinks of death as something trivial for it is part of everyday life. I feel that if the story wasn't in first person the story would not be renown as a classic. For without the narrator's perspective Camus' book would not be known for describing the human condition. • 72. Power In Lord Of The Flies Analysis In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies, it has successfully unpacked Golding's personal ideas and values about power, that are to be held between different characters in the novel. It teaches the audience that humans have the ability to maintain and destroy a corruptive situation. Power can be represented in different circumstances and depends on who holds the ultimate power. The two leading characters, Ralph and Jack have made an occurrence of disintegrating their own society throughout the novel. The amount of power on the island corrupts absolutely whilst the savagery in the boys have invaded their civilised selfhood. As the boys slowly inhabit on the maroon island, the audience develops an understanding of Jack and Ralph's different sets of beliefs, that are influenced by their view on the society. Golding has added concepts of allegories to make the audience challenge their thoughts power and how it can be utilised. The whole novel is referred to allegory for danger of the excessive power and how it has the ability to give way and inherent a savage nature. Conversely, this is demonstrated by all of the boys on the island. When the boys begin to adapt to the island, Ralph's lieutenant, Piggy finds a alluring, white pink shell, called the conch. Both Ralph and Piggy decide to utilise the conch by allowing a individual to speak while everyone must obey and listen to them. Although the conch has a certain purity to others, it begins to foreshadow its use. Consequently, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Savagery In Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis The Fall Into Savagery Society is the one thing that keeps the world together, that separates men from the beasts who dwell outside of civilized borders. Without the guidance and safety of civilization men would fall back to more primitive ways, back to savage and less sophisticated means of living. Many things will push men away from their civilized ways to a more primitive way of thinking. From the need and struggle to obtain power or the disregard for rules set by society as a whole, to the natural desire to cause harm and the simple need to fit in and not stand out in the crowd as an outsider. In the novel The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding, golding uses the lack of societys guidance to show that without it the children on the island ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the beginning Jack has been obsessed with his need to kill and to prove himself as a man "He snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk. Next time there would be no mercy" (Golding, 31). When the pig first escaped Jack in the jungle he first experiences the feeling of inadequacy and self doubt. With this extreme embarrassment weighing on Jack's conscience he develops an obsession with the hunt and the bloodlust of the kill. Forcing him to abandon reason and ignore his basic responsibilities as one of the leaders of the group. Even after the first pig is killed and Jack proves his manliness the urge to kill and hunt only grows stronger. As his sole purpose becomes to only hunt he starts to forsake his more civilized side, instead taking on the savage persona of "the hunter" when he covers his face in mud and paint. With this mask to hide behind Jack builds a new sense of false confidence "he looked in astonishment, no longer himself but at an awesome stranger" (Golding, 63) behind this mask jack was no longer the civilized british schoolboy but instead the savage hunter of the ... • 76. ##titudes Of Civilization In William Golding's Lord Of The... We all consider ourselves civilized. We think this because we are sophisticated and cultured, and have laws and order. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding explores a scenario where schoolboys enter a lawless and orderless paradise. Through his depiction of characters, Jack, Roger, and the naval officer, he reveals his attitudes towards civilization and civilized behavior. Golding shows that civilization and society are only masks, a constraint for human's true selves because no one is truly civilized, but instead innately uncivilized and savage. From the beginning of the novel, Golding uses Jack Merridew's development and actions to present his attitudes of civilizations and its constraints. Jack begins as a normal choir boy, with respect to rules and against uncivilized behavior: "We've got to have rules, and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English and the English are best at everything." (42) He believes in civilized actions and following rules, which is continually contrasted by his behavior in later chapters. He neglects his duty to keep the signal fire going, and he doesn't follow the rules of the conch. However, the one duty he doesn't neglect to do, is hunting. But the way Jack feels about doing it, does change. Jack, Simon, and Ralph all go on the first adventure trip of the island, and they find a pig without even searching for one, but it is Jack's responsibility to hunt and kill it, as he was designated as one of the hunters. However, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Analysis Of Ray Bradbury 's ' The Veldt ' Loredona Lazzara Engish 102 July 7, 2015 Dehumanizing Society Technology can be a beautiful thing, which is very convenient when connecting with others. It may even leave our mind with some peace. Most of the time it is what keeps us in touch and strengthens our relationships with old friends, family members and co– workers. Technology today can provide opportunities for students all over the world to receive an education online, while still maintaining work and family schedules. Students are able to obtain a degree online just as any student on campus may, with just a click of button on a screen. How would we feel if our personal technology devices were taken away? Many of us may feel like a part of us is missing but, in reality we've been taken away from interpersonal communication and interactions. Not only is technology hurting our younger children in society but, many of our adults too. In Ray Bradbury's story, "The Veldt" he describes how the more technology you have the more dissatisfied you become. Society has come to show us how technology is slowly dehumanizing our world. In our world today, technology has become more and more advanced and it seems to take control over our lives. In the poem, "The Veldt" the theme had been set on how technology had make life somewhat easier. Technology had made life so easy "that it wasn't even living anymore," the father, George states in the story. Much of the technology in the Veldt had ruined the life that existed before ...
