Lila stole money to help support herself and her younger sister Dawn after their parents died, but Dawn is upset by Lila's criminal act. Dawn confronts Lila about stealing her jumper and blasts loud music to annoy Lila. When Lila admits she stole money, Dawn accuses her of not being the role model their parents wanted. Lila realizes Dawn is right and decides to turn herself into the police, though Dawn will miss her. Their argument reveals the moral dilemma of providing for family through illegal means.

1. Caught – Georgie & Lauren
Int. Lila’s bedroom – DAY
LILA SMITH, early twenties, in her simplistic room with just a
bed, desk, wardrobe and drawers. The room is white and tidy,
LILA is folding clothes and putting them away. LILA can hear
music in the background, she storms out of her room.
Int. Dawn’s bedroom – DAY
DAWN SMITH, fifteen, is on her bed listening to music with her
laptop open, we can hear the loud pop-punk music, she is
wearing a bright pink jumper. Dawn’s room is dark and messy,
drawers are slightly open with clothes spilling over the
sides, and clothes scatter the floor. The curtains and blinds
are drawn. LILA bursts through the door and steps into the
middle of the room. DAWN doesn’t look up, she turns the volume
of the music playing from her laptop up.
LILA
(Voice gets louder each time she calls.)
Dawn. Dawn. Dawn!
DAWN doesn’t respond, instead increases the volume of her
music from her laptop. LILA sighs and taps the mute button on
DAWN’s laptop. DAWN does not look up at her, she unmutes her
music. This is repeated three times before LILA slams DAWN’s
closed.
DAWN
What?
LILA
Can you not listen to that quietly?
DAWN
I’m revising
DAWN puts a jumper on. LILA notices the jumper DAWN is wearing
LILA

2. Caught – Georgie & Lauren
(Rolls eyes) I don’t know how you can concentrate with the
music so loud
(pause, LILA goes to turn away but notices Dawn is wearing a
jumper)
Wait what are you wearing? Is that my jumper?!
DAWN
You gave it to me - it’s mine!
LILA
No I didn’t! Give it back!
DAWN
You can’t tell me what to do anymore.
LILA
What’s wrong with you? You’ve been like this for days?
DAWN opens her laptop again, but with no music playing.
DAWN
Nothing.
LILA
There’s something wrong. Tell me.
DAWN
Nothing’s wrong.
(Pause)
Um, can you leave now? I don’t want you to get sticky fingers
in here
LILA looks confused
LILA
What are you talking about?
DAWN

3. Caught – Georgie & Lauren
You know exactly what I’m talking about
LILA
Dawn, please.
DAWN
What? I don’t care.
LILA
Dawn…
DAWN rolls her eyes and groans.
LILA
I don’t know why you’re acting like this! I fixed everything!
All those money troubles are gone now!
DAWN
(not looking at Lila)
Yeah, you totally fixed everything
LILA
(mutters)
They wouldn’t have missed the money anyway
DAWN
That doesn’t matter! You’re not supposed to steal! You’re a
criminal!
LILA
So you’re upset about this?
DAWN
(Sarcastically)
No, I’m peachy

4. Caught – Georgie & Lauren
LILA sits on the bed
LILA
I didn’t have any other choice, Dawn.
DAWN
Yes you did, and you still do now
LILA
Dawn, we were struggling, and now we’re fine. Stop being so
ungrateful
DAWN remains silent on her laptop
LILA
I can’t fix this now Dawn, what’s done is done, I know that
doesn’t make it right.. but…
DAWN
This isn’t how Mum and Dad raised us.
LILA
Well they’re not here.
DAWN
They wouldn’t be proud of you
LILA sits on the bed silent for a few seconds
LILA
(Strained quiet voice)
You’re right, they wouldn’t be proud of me
DAWN
Lila…

5. Caught – Georgie & Lauren
LILA
They would be turning in their graves; I’m such a bad
daughter. How the hell did I think I could take care of you? I
can’t even take care of myself
DAWN
No, Lila, it’s okay. You just messed up a little – you can
still fix this, you can just give the money back
LILA
Dawn, it doesn’t work like that
DAWN
Yes it does
LILA
No Dawn, I’ll be arrested and I’ll go to court and then go to
prison for months, years maybe
DAWN
Well, I’m sure if you just say you’re sorry you’ll be okay
LILA
(pauses)
Okay Dawn, I’ll do that. And then you and I will be okay?
DAWN
Yep, we can even go for ice cream
LILA gets up from the bed and walks across the room. She
reaches the door. DAWN watches LILA and puts down her laptop
on her bed. She rushes across the room and throws herself at
LILA, hugging her tightly from behind, burying her face into
LILA’s shoulder, her fists balled. LILA stays still.

6. Caught – Georgie & Lauren
DAWN
(sighs)
I’ll miss you.
LILA is surprised and relieved, she turns around and hugs her
back, her head resting on top of DAWN’s.
FADE TO BLACK
