Catherine of Aragon was born in Spain and married first to Arthur, Prince of Wales. After Arthur's death, she married his brother Henry VIII and they had one surviving daughter, Mary. Henry sought to annul their marriage because Catherine had previously been married to his brother. Catherine opposed the annulment but Henry had it granted by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1533. Catherine was exiled for the rest of her life and died in 1536, while her daughter Mary later became queen of England.
