This paper will reflect on the changes (for good and ill) in cataloguing, metadata, and discovery that Alan Danskin has witnessed or contributed to over the course of his career at the British Library.
Although we live through a period of profound technical and societal change, it is important to consider the constants that underpin our work. Cataloguing may be carried out in the present, but it has to remain useful to future generations. Maintaining the relevance and quality of what we and our predecessors have achieved is an ongoing process, particularly for a national library. Maintaining and developing capacity and capability are perennial challenges. In this paper Alan will also attempt to look ahead, but his predictions should be treated with caution; he expected that he would have left the British Library and returned to Scotland by 1990!

Essential E-Book Metadata for Everyone!

High quality and accurate bibliographic metadata is an essential part of the supply chain for books and e-books as it enables titles to be easily and reliably identified, selected, and accessed. Yet libraries and content providers have worked for years to find common ground across stakeholder groups regarding metadata requirements.
This breakout session will describe two new efforts to reach consensus: Metadata Profiles from the NAG Quality of Shelf Ready Metadata Project, and the NISO Recommended Practice on, E-Book Bibliographic Metadata Requirements.
Both projects demonstrate the importance of developing a shared understanding between publishers, vendors and libraries regarding the creation and sharing of quality metadata so that it has value throughout the supply chain.

Andrew Gray, the British Library's Wikipedian in Residence, has been working on an AHRC-supported program to help more academics and researchers engage with Wikipedia. In this talk, he will give a brief history of the Wikipedia project, looking at its origins and the way it has developed over time. The talk will also cover the growing amount of research done around Wikipedia itself. Well over 2,000 peer-reviewed papers have been published which looked at Wikipedia in some way - looking at the project's content and community, or using this data as a way to study broader questions of collaboration and interaction.

The not-so-secret lives of cataloguers: modern cataloguing in a contemporary ...
This session considers current practices and the future of cataloguing. The current reality of today’s cataloguing and the role of cataloguers will be dissected. A picture will be drawn of modern cataloguing, where thinking creatively, connecting retrieval with cataloguing, and building relationships across the library, are all paramount. Then the future of cataloguing will be imagined including some of the opportunities and issues faced. While recruitment issues and the pervasive devaluing of cataloguing work are potential impediments to progress, the opportunities offered by developments such as linked data and evolving bibliographic data models suggest an exciting cataloguing future for 2019 and beyond.

This session considers current practices and the future of cataloguing. The current reality of today’s cataloguing and the role of cataloguers will be dissected. A picture will be drawn of modern cataloguing, where thinking creatively, connecting retrieval with cataloguing, and building relationships across the library, are all paramount. Then the future of cataloguing will be imagined including some of the opportunities and issues faced. While recruitment issues and the pervasive devaluing of cataloguing work are potential impediments to progress, the opportunities offered by developments such as linked data and evolving bibliographic data models suggest an exciting cataloguing future for 2019 and beyond.

1. Managing digital collections presents new challenges for libraries as collections become more hybrid in nature, incorporating both physical and born-digital materials.
2. The Bodleian Library's futureArch project aims to transform its capacity for managing hybrid archives over three years by establishing new workflows, training staff, and developing infrastructure like a digital archive system.
3. Personal digital collections are an emerging issue as individuals increasingly capture their lives digitally; the Bodleian must adapt to maintain its role as a repository and establish trust with creators of these collections.
