Editor's Notes

  • #3  The Mediterranian Diet is a cultural heritage that is much more than just nutritional, tasty and healthy pattern. It’s a balanced lifestyle, based on the intake of veggies, beans, fruits, fish and olive oil as a essential fat and also includes the wine. It includes recipies, cooking methods, local products, celebrations and customs. The catalan cuisine is framed in this mediterranian diet. There is no food that provides by itself all the nutrients our body needs. Therefore, only the variety of products and the intake of the proper portions of each of them will allow a healthy growth. It´s also important to educate children on food diversity to develop on them the sense of taste and to learn to eat in a healthy way.
  • #4  10 basics of the mediterranian Diet- 1-Olive oil is your best friend to go with salads, veggies... 2-Eat plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables, legumes and nuts.- 3- Bread and other grain products (like pasta, rice, and whole grains) should be a part of your everyday diet. 4-Make the most of the fresh and seasonal products of your region. 5-Consume dairy products everyday, mainly yogurt and cheese. 6. MEAT SHOULD BE CONSUMED IN MODERATION . 7.- CONSUME FISH ABUNDANTLY AND EGGS IN MODERATION. 8.- fRESH FRUIT SHOULD BE YOUR EVERYDAY DESSERT AND, SWEETS, CAKES AND DAIRY DESSERTS SHOULD BE CONSUMED ONLY ON OCCASION. 9- WATER IS THE BEVERAGE PAR EXCELLENCE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET. (Be WATER MY FRIEND) 10.-BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE EVERY DAY, IT IS JUST, AS IMPORTANT AS EATING WELL. All this points have to be done inside our meal schedule. Taula d’alimentació: BREAKFAST:25%, LUNCH:35%, SNACK:15% DINNER:25% , Usually, after school we have a snack, we call it : “Berenar”.
  • #5  Breakfast is the first meal of the day, so it is very important. We haven’t eat for at least, 8 hours and our body HASN’T recieve any nutrient. Therefore, we have a morning ahead and we need energy.  For breakfast we have to have a dairy product (,milk yoghurt, cheese..) fruit (juice or fresh) and grains (bread or cereals)
  • #6  At midday, between 1 and half past two, we have the second main meal. We gather together in order to have the portion of proteins, veggies, carbs, grains and fruit. We have all these foods in three different courses, first, second and dessert.
  • #7 In the evening between 8 and 9 pm. We sat on the table with the family and we can have a fast dinner with bread and tomato , some sausagues, cheese, eggs or some soup, salad and fish or eggs. For dessert, fruit or yogurt.
  • #8 Catalan salad, Paella, Snails in a tin, spring onions grilled, Recapte pastry, bread and tomato, apple and pears from Lleida, prawns, Catalan creme brule, panellets, fricandó, meatballs with cuttlefish, Potatoe omelette.,
  • #9 Sopa de Galets. (Big shells soup), La mona (Easter cake), Tortell de Reis (Kings cake), Pollastre amb prunes i pinyons (chicken with plums and pinecones), Coca de recapte, (aubergine and pepper pastry)
  • #10 In Catalonia and also throughout Spain lunch and dinner time is very important, so it is a social activity to be around a table sharing food and talk. Despite of the rush of our society and parents jobs, sometimes families eat as they can. Schoolers used to have lunch at school but depending of parents timetables they can go home for lunch and then come back to afternoon classes. For breakfast we don’t eat too much in general,( we have to improve that) we are sleepy and not hungry. We have breakfast with our parents, in general in the kitchen table or dining room. Everyday we take a small snack for school like a sandwich or fruit. For lunch we can stay at the school canteen or at home with our parents or grandparents. ( we have time, from 12:30 to 15:00pm.) two hours and a half for lunch break. So we can have lunch quietly in the dining room, it’s the most important meal of the day. After school lessons at half past four, our parents or relatives, bring us another snack when they come to pick us up, a sandwich, a piece of cake, fruit.... And water. We drink a lot of still water. At dinner time all the family gather together, between 8 or 9:00 pm. And have some food at the table. Before going to bed it is very common to have a cup of milk. At weekends we used to visit our grandparents and have lunch with them.
  • #11 The Catalan and Spanish cuisine has become very popular around the world because their big chefs. Our everyday food is cooked in a variety of methods like barbacue, in a tin, in the oven, grilled, boiled and steaming and another less healthy like fried and stews. We use olive oil to cook instead of butter so the taste is different. We also eat a lot of salads and raw veggies and fruits. In Lleida we have plenty of pipped fruit like peaches, nectaries, plums, pears and apples
  • #12 These are some examples about catalan products: spring onions (calçots) with romesco sauce, snails a la llauna, roasted sweet potatoes, Escalivada: aubergines, red peppers and onions roasted, prawns from la Costa Brava, fuet (dry and salty sausage), almonds with sugar crust, fresh fruits, preserves and jams
